【題目】 Has anyone told you that it’s fun to play with English words? For a long time these “words within words” in English have been used to surprise and educate us…and they often make us laugh too. Now we go to learn about them.

Riddles(謎語)

How did the animals open the zoo door? They used a monkey! What’s the longest word in English? Smiles—there’s a “mile” between the first and last letters! These jokes —a question followed by a surprising answer — are known as “riddles”. But the ones above are examples of a special kind of riddle, a riddle which is funny because a word is hidden within another word. Many English speakers are crazy about this kind of words with double meaning. And it can be found in texts written in English a very long time ago. But riddles are not the only example of “words within words”.

Hidden words

During Victorian times (1837—1901), the game of hiding words within a whole sentence became popular. Look carefully at this sentence—The king eats his lunch in a fine palace. Can you see that the countries “China” and “Nepal” are hidden in it? The Victorians even used hidden words to teach children history and geography at school. Today we still see hidden word games in books and magazines, but we also use hidden words in jokes.

Palindromes(回文詞)

Palindromes are words and phrases which can be read the same forwards and backwards. The pop group “Abba”, for example, is a palindrome. The sentence “Was it a car or a cat I saw?” is also a palindrome. We find them interesting, but they can also be funny: I kept receiving emails about reading maps backwards, but then I realized it was just spam(垃圾郵件)!

1Which of the following is a riddle?

A. step—pets, part—trapB. hiding words within a whole sentence

C. silent—listen, the eyes—they seeD. Which letter is a question? Y (Why) .

2By reading the article we can know “___________”.

A. Riddles are the only example of “words within words”.

B. Victorians even used riddles to teach kids history at school.

C. “Was it a car or a cat I saw?” is a palindrome as well.

D. These “words within words” in English often make us cry.

3The best title of the passage is ________.

A. It’s fun to play with wordsB. “Words within words” educate us

C. Riddles & Hidden wordsD. The pop group “Abba”

【題目】In the past, Chinese buyers liked foreign brands better, thinking that products made by American or European companies are of higher quality than Chinese ones. But now that’s no longer the case.

“Chinese people born before 1985 generally think that foreign brands are better than Chinese ones, billionaire William Li told Business Insider during a recent interview on CCTV 9. But for those who were born after 1985, it is a different picture.

“When I first went to the United Kingdom in 1997, I thought that the difference between China and Europe was quite big, Li said. “But for those born in the 1990s, when they visit Europe or the US, they do not think there is a big difference.”

The change in thinking among Chinese buyers is showing up in many markets in China where western companies controlled before. A study by Credit Suisse which came out in March found that more and more young Chinese buyers are showing a home brand bias.

More than 90% of young Chinese buyers would prefer to buy home brands, according to the study. At the same time, home companies producing food, drinks, or personal care products raised their share(份額) of the market by 33% over the last ten years to nearly 70%.

“Chinese buyers, especially the younger ones, don’t just believe that foreign brands are better. Right now, Chinese buyers think China is good and ‘Made in China’ is not bad at all, Charlie Chen, head of China buyer research at Credit Suisse, told South China Morning Post in March.

The Chinese smartphone market is controlled by home companies Huawei, Oppo, Vivo, and Xiaomi. Apple is the only foreign brand in the top five, but it has lost large ground to the home brands in recent years. Its market share is believed to go down to 37% from a 2015 high of 54%.

A. More and more foreigners go to buy Chinese products.

B. Older Chinese people don’t like foreign products any more.

C. More and more Chinese buyers prefer Chinese products.

2Which fact best explains home brand bias?

C. Chinese people born before 1985 think that Chinese brands aren’t as good as foreign ones.

First of all, we need to pick a good toothbrush. Softness is the key. Brushes with hard bristles (刷毛) can hurt your teeth and gums (牙齦). Choose one with soft bristles and rounded ends. Also, it is easy for you to reach all your teeth with a brush with a small head, since they can push into the small spaces of your mouth.

Next you need to learn the correct way to brush our teeth. Doctors around the world recommend the Bass brushing technique (貝氏刷牙法).The method advises you to brush your teeth along the gum line at a 45-degree angle (角度) with very small back-and-forth vibrating motions (顫動(dòng)). Bad things usually hang out where the gums and teeth meet. You can clean the area well and prevent tooth and gum disease with this method.

After a good brush, you need to go on to floss (用牙線清理) your teeth. Put dental floss into the space between two teeth and use a careful back-and-forth motion. It helps get food out of the spaces. But don’t move the floss too hard, or it may hurt your gums.
