Today there are 6.4 billion people on the earth. By the year 2050 there may be 12.5 billion . There are a lot of people to feed. We need more  and more food.
One way to produce more food is growing stronger plants. For thousands of years, farmers have made plants better. Every season, they pick the best plants for the next season. It works very slowly. Since 1983, scientists have been able to change plants more quickly by changing their genetic(遺傳的) material. Foods from plants grown in this way are called genetically modified(改變的) foods, or GM foods.
By changing the genetic material of a plant, it is possible to make new plants. They make plants which are strong against plant diseases. They can also help in our diseases; a kind of rice is being prepared , for example , which stops people becoming blind.
Rich countries produce GM foods because they are easy to grow and bring in more money. Poor countries are interested in them because they help produce more food.
GM plants are not natural. No one knows how good or bad they are,. Making GM foods is only one way of feeding people in 2050. There are strong feelings against them, because they are unnatural. They may feed people , then hurt them or their children later. But both rich and poor countries are interested in their use, and they are not going to go away. In 2050, we may think differently about them.

2. D 此題講的是這些遺傳基因改變的食物的優(yōu)點,定位到第三段。從They make plants which are strong against plant diseases. They can also help in our diseases可知A和C都是其中的一個方面,故選D。
3. A 細節(jié)題的考查。從because they help produce more food可知它們能夠幫助產(chǎn)生更多的食物,故是一種快速生產(chǎn)食物的途徑,故選A。

The San Diego Zoo has been a lovely home for giant pandas since two of the black-and-white bears came to visit in 1987. This week there was snow in San Diego—well, at least for a lucky group of giant pandas.

Over 15 tons of snow was blown into the San Diego Zoo's panda area on Tuesday morning to give the endangered bears a chance to play. They would experience the snow just like living in their natural habitat.

The snow day was a first for Xiao Liwu whose name means "Little Gift." He was the sixth baby panda born to Bai Yun. Xiao Liwu was jumping on Mom, playing with her and getting used to being thrown in the snow by mama bear. Jennifer Becerra, San Diego Zoo keeper said, "He was really enjoying the snow and running around. I've never seen him so happy."

All the San Diego Zoo’s giant pandas are from China, as part of a long-term captive breeding(人工養(yǎng)殖) program. Four of Xiao Liwu's brothers have already been moved from California to China.

Today there are 44 giant pandas living in zoos outside of China, where the bears' only natural home is. As just 1,600 pandas are thought to be left in the wild, researchers insist that captive breeding is an important way to study and protect the endangered pandas. Not only because of the habitat loss from human activities and low reproductive rates(繁殖率), giant pandas' survival is also affected by climate change. A study showed that global warming could kill much of the bears' main food, bamboo, over the next century.

1.Why was the snow blown into the San Diego Zoo's panda area?

A.To stop the bamboos from dying.

B.To give the pandas a chance to play.

C.To help the pandas live in their natural habitat.

D.To make Xiao Liwu happy.

2.What’s the relationship between Bai Yun and Xiao Liwu?

A.Wife and husband.

B.Father and daughter.

C.Sister and brother.

D.Mother and son.

3.What is NOT the factor that influences the giant pandas' number?

A.The loss of habitat.

B.Low reproductive rates.

C.Human research.

D.Climate change.

4.Which of the following is the best title of this passage?

A.Giant pandas in San Diego Zoo

B.Giant pandas in danger

C.Xiao Liwu’s happy time

D.How to protect giant pandas

5.Which of the following is true according to the passage?

A.Captive breeding is the most useful way to protect giant pandas.

B.More than 44 giant pandas live in zoos outside of China now.

C.China is the only natural home of giant pandas.

D.Xiao Liwu was afraid of being thrown in the snow by mama.

科目:初中英語 來源:2011屆黑龍江省初三下學期第一次月考英語卷 題型:閱讀理解

A rabbit is running into his hole. You may ask, “What happened?”

Well, when a rabbit sees something dangerous, it runs away. Its tail moves up and down as it runs. When other rabbits see this tail moving up and down, they ran, too. They know there is danger. The rabbit has told them something without making a sound. It has given them a signal.

Many other animals use this kind of language. When a bee finds some food, it goes back to his home. It can’t tell the other bees where the food is by speaking to them, but it does dance in the air. This tells the bees where the food is.

But animals say things by making sounds. A dog barks, for examples, when a stranger comes near. A cat purrs(發(fā)出呼嚕呼嚕的聲音) when pleased. Some birds make several different sounds, each with its own meaning.

But human beings have something that no animals have---- a large number of words about things, actions, feelings or ideas. We are able to give each other information to tell or inform other people what is in our mind or how we feel. By writing words down we can remind ourselves of the things that have happened, or send messages to people far away. No animals can do this. No animals has the wonderful power of language.

No one knows how man learned to make words. Somehow he learned to make them. As centuries went by, he made more and more new words. This is what we mean by language.

People in different countries made different kinds of words. Today there are about fifteen hundred different languages in the world. A very large English dictionary, for examples, contains four or five hundred thousand words. But we don’t know all these. The words we know are called vocabulary. We should try to make our vocabulary larger. Read as many books as possible. When we met a new word, look it up in the dictionary. A dictionary is the most useful book.
