Ways to Fall Asleep

  為了盡快進(jìn)入甜蜜的夢鄉(xiāng),歷史上許多名人絞盡腦汁,有的人終于找到了自己獨特的入眠方法,可有的人還是好夢難圓。你想探個究竟嗎?

How much sleep do we need? The answers are different. Some people need only three hours of sleep a night. Others need ten hours of sleep a night. Most Americans sleep for an average of seven to eight hours a night. After age fifty, the average sleep hours go down to 6.5 hours a night.

Most people will have a bad night when they can't fall asleep. About one in three Americans has a problem with sleep. Many of these people cannot fall asleep. The name of this problem is called insomnia(失眠癥).

This is not a new problem. Many famous people in history had insomnia. Some of these people had their own ways to sleep well. Benjamin Franklin (本杰明·富蘭克林), the famous inventor, had four beds. He moved from one to another to fall asleep. King Louis XIV(國王路易十四)of France had 413 beds and hoped to fall asleep in one of them. Mark Twain, the famous writer, had a different way: he lay on his side(側(cè)臥)across the end of the bed!

Long long ago people made fires from lightening(閃電). But they had to keep the fire burning, for they couldn't start it again if there was no lightening. Later, they found out hitting two pieces of stone together could make a spark (火花). The spark could fire dry leaves. In this way they could make the fire again if it went out. Then people also learned to make a fire by mbbing(摩擦). They made a hole on a piece of wood and put a smaller stick into the hole. They turned the stick again and again. After a few minutes they got a fire.

Years went by, people learned other ways to make a fire. Sometimes they used the heat from the sun. They held a piece of glass in the right way and made a piece of paper on fire.

About two centuries ago, people began to make matches. Matches brought people a quick and easy way to make fires. Today matches are still being used, but people have more new ways to make fires.
