Have you heard about “Survival (生存) Holidays”? “Survival Holidays” is for children to go into the lonely place for exciting activities. Now about 1 ? 100 companies are allowed to take children into the great outdoors without their parents.
The reason why people like “Survival Holidays” is that they think being close to nature is good for children. Many children in big cities spend all time watching TV and playing computer games. “Survival Holidays” gives them an important change.
Is “Survival Holidays” a wonderful idea? Maybe it is. Children need more free time to play. They need to be left on their own, without adults disturbing (打擾) them. Reading is a good habit, but the problem is,there ’ s too much to read these days, and too little time to read every word of it. There are hundreds of skills to help you read more in less time. Here are two skills that I think are especially good.
Preview——if it's long and hard. Previewing is especially useful for getting a general idea of heavy reading like long magazine articles and business reports.
Here ’ s how to preview.
. Read the first two paragraphs and the last two paragraphs carefully.
. Then read only the first sentence of the other paragraphs.
Previewing doesn ’t give you all the details. It keeps you from spending time on things you don , t really want—or need—to read.
Skim—if it ’ s short and simple. Skimming is a good way to get a general idea of light reading——like popular magazines or the sports and entertainment of your daily paper.
Here ’ s how to skim.
. Get your eyes to move fast. Sweep them across each line.
. Pick up only a few key words in each line.
Everybody skims differently. You and I may not pick up the same words when we skim the same piece, but we ’ 11 get a similar idea of what it ’ s all about.
() 1. How many skills are recommended in this passage?
A. One. B. Two. C. Three. D. Four.
() 2. What does the underlined word “Skim” mean in Chinese?

May me Clayton collected books, magazines and letters written by African Americans. Her son,Avery Clayton, thought her collection was important. Unlike most books, these were rare and hard to find. They were written by writers who helped shape African American culture.
One book in the collection was written by Phillis Wheatley. Wheatley was a slave who wrote poetry. She was the first African American to publish (出版) a book. Wheatley herself signed (簽名) the book in the Clayton ’ s collection. No one else owns a copy signed by Phillis Wheatley.
By the time she passed away at age 83 ? Mrs Clayton had more than 30 ,000 books by or about black people. Her collection also includes papers about slaves ? photographs ? movies ? sheet music ? and personal letters by black leaders and artists. It is one of the biggest personal collections of African American history and culture in the United States.
Avery Clayton ’ s dream was to create a museum for his mother ’ s treasures. Scholars say that Mrs Clayton ’ s collection is very important. Without her work, part of African American heritage (遺產(chǎn)) would have been lost. “ We didn ’ t know these things existed,” says Sara Hadron of California,s Huntington Library.
The collection ’ s ew home is likely to be in Culver City,California. Part of Avery Clayton ’ s ream is to share the cultural riches his mother collected with others. He especially wants kids to have a chance to see the collection. “At present,African American culture is being explained by pop culture”’ he says. “ It ’ s important to offer a more complete picture. ”

First Aid
Once a week a nurse visits Tom ’ s school and teaches the students how to help people who suddenly become ill or who have had an accident. Last week, the nurse talked to the students about how to stop bleeding. This is part of what she said ,“When we cut ourselves,we usually bleed. This is because our bodies are full of blood vessels ? which carry blood to and from the heart. It doesn ’t matter if we lose a little blood from time to time. In fact, many people donate blood to hospitals. We can give at least a pint of blood without harming ourselves. We mustn ’ t lose too much blood, however ? so we need to know how to stop bleeding when it occurs. If the injury is small and the amount of blood coming from it is also small,we can usually stop the blood from flowing by pressing on the cut with a clean, cold, wet cloth that has a little sntiseptic on it. It is most important to use antiseptic. If you do not, then dirt and bacteria may get into the wound and cause an infection. If the injury is large and the amount of blood coming from it is also large ? then it is necessary to stop the blood flowing through the blood vessel. We do this by putting pressure on the vessel above the injury. We can either press on it with our fingers or put on a tourniquet, which is a piece of cloth tied tightly around the arm ? leg ? or finger.
A) Answer the following questions according to the passage.
1. What's the passage about?
2. What usually happens when we cut ourselves?
