【題目】Have you ever ridden a Ferris wheel lately? Can you imagine the flying feeling as you are pulled up to the top and then moved down to the bottom quickly again?

Today a Ferris wheel is usually 40 to 60 feet tall. That seems very high when you are on the top looking down. But the first Ferris wheel was 264 feet high taller than a twenty-story building! Can you imagine the view from the top of that?

The first Ferris wheel was built for the 1893 World’s Fair in Chicago. The people who planned the fair were looking for an attraction that would bring people to Chicago. George Ferris handed a drawing of a giant wheel that people could ride on. At first everyone laughed at his strange idea. But Mr. Ferris did not give up, and finally the idea was accepted. The ride opened in June of 1893.

Today’s Ferris wheels have 12 to 16 seats which each carry 2 or 3 people. But that first one had 36 enclosed cars, each holding 60 passengers. When filled, it carried 2160 people. During that summer in Chicago, about 1.5 million people rode the Ferris wheel.

After the fair the ride was moved to a nearby amusement park built especially to show off the wheel. In 1904 it was moved again to St. Louis for the Louisiana Purchase Exposition. After the fair there, the wheel stood unused. In 1906 it was finally sold to a company for scrap metal (廢鐵).

Luckily a Chicago bridge builder W.E. Sullivan, figured out how to make a smaller Ferris wheel that could easily be taken apart and put together. In 1906 he started the company that still makes many of the Ferris wheels used today.

But, whenever you ride one remember that it all began with George Ferris’s strange idea!

No garbage(垃圾) lunches. How much do you throw away after lunch? Environment clubs ask students to bring their lunches in bags and the bags can be used again. If the classes make the least garbage, we will report them to the whole school!

No car day. On a no car day, nobody comes to school in a car-----not the students and not the teachers! Cars give pollution to our air, so remember: Walk, jump, bike or run. Use your legs! It's lots of fun!

【題目】It happens every spring. Flowers come out everywhere on the same day. But how do plants know when to flower?

For years, it has been a difficult question for scientists. But a US research group may have finally answered itthe secret lies in a protein(蛋白質(zhì))called FKF1. This helps plants to know when the days become long and when they get short. Then they can tell the seasons are changing.

Researchers found the FKF1 protein when they were studying a plant called Arabidopsis(擬南芥). It is sensitive(敏感的)to sunlight, and can be made active by sunlight.

Plants produce this protein every day in the late afternoon all year. If there is no light at this time, for example in winter when the sun goes down early, the protein wont be active. But when spring comes and the days get longer, the FKF1 protein can be made active by day light and the plants know it is time to flower. If there is light in the late afternoon, plants will know that the days are getting longer and that it is the best time for flowers to come out, explained Takato Imaizumi, leader of study. But when conditions are poor for growing, such as during autumn or winter when the weather is cold and days are short, plants wont flower.

Although researchers have only studied how the FKF1 protein works in the Arabidopsis, they believe that it is the same with many other plants, including crops such as rice and wheat. This could be useful to the agricultural industry.

If we can control when flowers come out, we might be able to increase crop production, Imaizumi said.

A. it rains in spring

B. there is light in the late afternoon

C. it is getting dark

D. the sun goes down early

【4】Scientists believe that____.

B. flowers are more valuable than fruits and vegetables

C. people have known how to control when flowers come out

【題目】任務(wù)型閱讀:

請(qǐng)認(rèn)真閱讀下列短文,并根據(jù)所讀內(nèi)容在文章后面的圖表里填入最恰當(dāng)?shù)膯卧~。

Next to e-mail, the most popular activity on the net is chatting. And if you ask someone what kind of things they do most on the Internet, chances are they will answer that they like to chat. This seems especially true of the younger generation.

Chatting is like any other social interaction. We all know that if we go into a group of people at a party or at school… and start screaming or start asking everyone their age before we even say hello, we aren’t going to make many friends. Chat rooms are different. Below are some tips that will make your chat experience friendly and fun!

Walking into a room and demanding age or sex is the most common mistake a new chatter makes. Most regular chatters will ignore the question and you. In a community such as Youth Tech you will usually find people of all ages and backgrounds. That is the fantastic thing about online chatting. Don’t limit yourself. Talk to everyone in the room equally. You will soon know who shares your interests and who doesn’t. If you prefer a one-on-one type of online friendship, then maybe you’d better look for a pal.

Shy? Lots of people feel shy when they enter a chat room where everyone seems to know everyone else except him. It’s really easy to feel left out. The best way to lose that feeling is to make yourself feel that you are not a stranger. If you enter the room and say “Hello, everyone! My name〈nickname here〉and I’m new.” You will find that there are normally at least a couple of extra friendly people that will be happy to help you become a part of it all.

Basically the best way to have a good chat experience is to be yourself and friendly. Try to join in the conversations going on and don’t be afraid to ask for help. Do remember, however, not everyone is going to be nice and friendly. The same as at school, there are also going to be a few people that are rude and just make you feel rotten. The best thing to do is just ignore them. Arguing with them will just make it worse. Show that you are better than they are by just refusing to let them get to you.
