Maybe you know floods, earthquakes, sandstorms and so on. But have you heard of typhoons?

Typhoons are some of the worst storms? usually around the Pacific Ocean. Most happen in July? August and September.

How does a typhoon happen? When lots of sea water gets hot in the summer sun,it evaporates into the air. This makes the air hotter. When the air gets warm enough,it starts to move higher up into sky. Then cooler air around it rushes in. It fills the space that is left. After the air gets warmer,it starts to move quickly, making wind. The wind goes in circles and it keeps moving higher in the sky. The warmer the air gets? the quicker the wind moves. And when the wind moves faster than 30 metres a seconds a typhoon begins.

A typhoon has two parts, and one is called the “eye”. In the eye,the wind does not move so fast. The other part is the wall of clouds around the eye. Here are the strongest winds and hardest rains.

●Typhoons are very dangerous. What to do when a typhoon hits?

●Stay inside. Close all the windows and stay away from them.

●Try to bring all of your things inside. Strong winds could even blow away your bikes!

●Listen to the radio or TV for important information.

●If some people tell you to go to a safer place,do it right now.

Learning to understand your mother well is what you should do. Here are the best steps towards a better relationship with her. They are not necessarily surprising, but they have worked for many people. Try them.

      Remember your mother's age.

As children,we often do not think of our mother as having an age. Knowing our mother's age,not just in numbers of years but in terms of her psychological (心理上的) and physicaK生理的) state, often helps us to understand her better.

      Listen to your mother.

I have found that sometimes the things my mother told me long ago are pretty useful. If you respect her point of view, even if you do not share it,it will help your mother feel close to you.

Ask your mother about your childhood history.

If you are lucky enough to have living family, think of your life as a jigsaw puzzle and ask as many questions as you can to put the picture together. Understanding your roots and your childhood can help you know more clearly who you are,as part of afamilywhichyousharewithyourmother.

Taking any measure to understand our mother is the topic of how we understand ourselves. We should follow the way of her life. When we are able to accept our mother—with all her failings,we can understand her better and it can also help us to know about our shortcomings. Remember that understanding our mother is really about understanding ourselves.

根據(jù)短文內(nèi)容,回答下列問題。

1. Should we learn to understand our mother well?

2. What can help us understand our mother better?

3. How do we make our mother feel close to us?

4. Why do we ask our mother about our childhood history?

5. What does the writer want to tell us?

Before I begin my story,I would like to tell you a little about myself.

I was born in the year 1632,in the city of York in the north of England. My father was German, but he came to live and work in England. My mother was English. Her family name was Robinson,so, when I was born, they called me Robinson, after her.

My father did well in his business and I went to a good school. He wanted me to get a good job and live a quiet, comfortable life. But I didn't want that. I wanted adventure and an exciting life.

“I want to be a sailor and go to sea,” I told my mother and father. They were very unhappy about this.

“Please don't go”’ my father said. “You won’t be happy, you know. Sailors have a difficult and dangerous life.” And because I loved him,and he was unhappy,I tried to forget about the sea.

But I couldn’t forget, and about a year later,I saw a friend in town. His father had a ship, and my friend said to me ,“We’re sailing to London tomorrow. Why don't you come with us?”

And so,on September 1st,1651,I went to Hull, and the next day we sailed for London.

But,a few days later, there was a strong wind. The sea was dangerous, and the ship went up and down,up and down. I was very ill,and very afraid.

“Oh,I don't want to die!” I cried “I want to live!If I live,I'll go home and never go to sea again!”

The next day the wind dropped, and the sea was quiet and beautiful again.

“Well,Bob ,” my friend laughed “How do you feel now? The wind wasn’t too bad. ”

“What!” I cried. “It was a krrzWe stornL ”

“Oh,that wasn’t a storm ,” my friend answered. “Just a little wind. Forget it. Come and have a drink.”

After a few drinks with my friend,I felt better. I forgot about the danger and decided not to go home. I didn't want my friends and family to laugh at me!

A group of swans flew down to a beach where a crow was jumping around. The crow watched them with disdain.

“You have no flying skills at all!” he said to the swans. “All you can do is to move your wings. Can you turn over in the air? No,that’s beyond you. Let's have a flying competition. I'll show you what real flying is!”

When we watch the sports match,we often see it happen—tennis players jump over the net to shake hands after a hard match;football players exchange jerseysafter ninety minutes of knocking each other around;even boxers touch gloves at the beginning of each round. Players in every event, from spelling bees to golf, act in this way. It’s all part of sportsmanship ,a great tradition in sports and competition. It means playing and being calm all through the match.

Everyone feels great when they win. In the last few years, you might see some players celebrate a goalwith a long victory dance or talk about their ability. However,it’s always hard for people to say in public that they made a bad play. Good sportsmanship is what they really need. It's the golden rule of sports.

Good sportsmanship means that you play by the rules, talk politely to everyone during games and stay cool even when you lose the game. At the school sports meeting, for example,it's more important for you to know how to work as part of a team and cheer your teammates on. That may help you enjoy more success at your future work. In competition——as in life——you may not always win,but believe me , sportsmanship will help you get through, and there is always the next match.

   C. Golf. D. Spelling.

() 2. The underlined word “bees” in the passage means .

Thirty years ago,Lake Ponkapog in Hartwell,New Jersey, was full of life. Many birds and animals lived beside the water, which was full of fish. Now there are few birds, animals,or fish. The lake water is polluted. It is in a colour of dirty brown, and it is filled with strange plants.

How did this happen? First,we must think about how water gets into Lake Ponkapog. When it rains, water comes into the lake from all around. In the past, there were forests all round Lake Ponkapog,so the rainwater was clean.

Now there are many homes around the lake. People often use the chemicals in their gardens. They use other chemicals inside their houses for cleaning and killing insects. There are also many businesses. Businesses use chemicals in their machines of shops. So more bad chemicals go into the water this way.

Clean rainwater is possible only if people are more careful about chemicals at home and other chemicals on the ground. And they mustn't use motorboats any more on the lake.        Early to bed and early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise.

This is an old English saying. It means that we should go to bed early at night and get up early in the morning. If we do,we shall be healthy. We shall also be rich and clever.

Is this true? Perhaps it is. The body must have enough sleep. Children of your age need ten hours’ sleep every night. If you do not go to bed early, you can not have enough sleep. Then you can not think properly and you can not do your work properly. You will not be wise and you may not become wealthy!

Some people go to bed late at night and get up late in the morning. This is not good for them. We should sleep at night when it is dark. The dark helps us to sleep well. When the daylight comes,we should get up. This is the time for exercise. If the body is not used,it will become weak. Exercise keeps it strong.

Exercise helps the blood to move around inside the body. This is very important. Blood takes nutrition to all parts of our bodies. The brains in our heads also need blood. We think with our brains. If we keep our bodies healthy, and take exercise,we can think better!

Our bodies also need air to breathe. Without air we will die. Get up early in the morning and we can have plenty of clean, fresh air. That will keep us healthy and happy.

() 1. The old English saying mainly means .

   A. what good habits are

   B. what bad habits are

   C. how to become healthy, rich and clever

   D. it's easy for people to get up and go to bed early

() 2. It's important for people to have enough sleep. If not, they .

   A. may not be strong

   B. may not become wealthy

   C. cannot think and do their work properly

   D. will not get up early

() 3. The fifth paragraph tells us that helps the blood to move around inside the body.

   A. fresh air   B. enough sleep

   C. good habits   D. exercise

() 4. This passage is probably written for .

   A. old people   B. middle-aged people

   C. weak people   D. children
