【題目】TED Talks: An Idea Worth Spreading

Have you heard of TED? TED stands for Technology, Entertainment and Design. TED is a set of meetings, held in different cities around the world every year. With different speakers – also from different parts of the world – all the speeches are uploaded (上傳) to their website, for everyone to see.

TED meetings invite speakers to give speeches on different kinds of topics. The different speakers are usually successful in their fields and talk about new ideas and recent developments that are important to their work. The speakers are often also well-known, with people such as Bill Gates and Jane Goodall, having given talks. There are many talks on environmentalism.

For example, and on international development, aid work, and how to help poor people. There are a number of talks about education and topics that are important in the news.

While the talks cover many kinds of topics, all speakers have a strict time limit – each speech must last less than 18 minutes.

As with all organisations (組織), however, TED has had its downs as well as ups. The organization has been criticised for turning great scientists into stars. Perhaps a bigger and more important criticism of the organization is that only special people can attend the meetings. Those who attend the meetings must be special enough to get tickets because TED events costing $6000 or more.

However, ted.org, the organisation’s website, is where the many interesting talks become reachable to everybody who has an Internet connection. Every weekday, a new video is uploaded from a TED event, allowing people from around the world to listen to the talks for free. At only 18 minutes, even if the video is not that interesting, you know you are not going to waste too much time.

Most TED talks are in English but there are talks in other languages, too. Besides, most of the English-language talks also have the choice of subtitles (字幕) in different languages and, as a result, the website is great for practising English and learning new vocabulary, especially in a topic that you find interesting and enjoyable. With so many choices of subject, the videos are often much more exciting.

The UK government is looking at how safely they can be used on the road and is examining the law again. But the official said, "It is an ______ product. We know there is need among people. However, safety must always be the first to consider when talking about their use on public highways in this country."

【題目】閱讀短文,并按要求完成下面小題。

A study shows that it is important to have positive (積極的) feelings in our daily life. Compared with some unhappy people, those who are always pleased and relaxed are less likely (可能地) to suffer from colds according to the study. The researchers from New York University said, “Being happy helps the body prevent diseases.”

“It seems that positive feelings can usually reduce the danger of illness,” said the chief researcher Sheldon Cohen.

In his earlier study, Cohen found that people who were cheerful caught colds less often. And they seldom told their doctors that they felt uncomfortable.

In this study, Cohen's team interviewed 193 adults every day for two weeks. In this period, they told the researchers about their happy or sad feelings every day. Two weeks later, all of them were made to catch colds by doctors, and they had to stay alone in a room for six days.

The result showed that each in the study had the same chance to fall ill. But people who were lively and relaxed said they felt happy when doing the research. Their illness was less serious and lasted for a shorter time.

Cohen believes that if people have positive feelings, their body may produce a kind of chemical that helps beat illness. So if you care about your health, please look at the bright side and make yourself happy all the time.

【題目】 Some children are natural-born bosses. They have a strong need to lead rather than follow. Stephen Jackson, a first-grade student, does everything under the idea of what's mine is mine and what's yours is mine. His mother said, "The other day I bought two new toy cars. Later, I saw Stephen with the two new ones while his brother was playing with the old ones. "

"Examine the whole big family, and you'll probably find a bossy relative in every generation. It's inheritable (遺傳的),"says Russell Barkley, who has studied bossy behavior for over 30 years at a university. "Other children who may not be so bossy can gradually get dominance when they sense their parents are weak, hesitant (猶豫的), or in disagreement with each other.

Whether it's inborn nature or developed character, too much control in the hands of the young isn't healthy for children or the family. "In fact a lot of bossy behavior comes from fear," says family psychologist John Taylor. "Children have secret feelings of weakness and a strong wish to feel safe. It's the parents' role to offer that protection," he says in his book.

"I see more and more parents giving up their power," says Barkley, "because they don't want to be as strict as their own parents were. But they also feel less confident (自信的) about their parenting skills. "

When a "boss child" doesn't learn limits(限制) at home, he may cause troubles outside the family, such as having trouble keeping friends.

So for the children, parents should be strict with them in a proper way and get more knowledge to be good parents.

1From the passage, Stephen Jackson is __________________.

A.lonely

B.hesitant

C.bossy

D.strict

2The underlined word dominance in Paragraph 2 probably means __________________.

D.understanding

3John Taylor says that __________________ in his book.

A.bossy children are usually fearful

B.bossy children usually feel safe

C.bossy behavior is inheritable

D.bossy behavior is inborn nature

4In the opinion of Barkley, more and more parents give up their power because __________________.

A.they feel confident abour their parenting skills

B.they want to be as strict as their own parents

C.they want to be less strict with their children

D.they are proud of having bossy children

5The passage mainly tells us __________________.
