Text messaging or “texting” is becoming very popular. Not only students but also adults like talking with 1 by texting. However, scientists have discovered that texting can give us problems 2 our hands. Be careful! Too much texting can cause RSI (Repetitive Stain Injury) in our thumbs(拇指) and wrists(手腕). We spoke to a doctor 3 Harriet Wilson, who treats many patients with RSI. She said if we 4 more than 10-15 minutes texting each time, we could have problems in the future. She also said that the 5 patient she had treated was a five-year-old girl. She had such bad RSI that she couldn’t hold a 6.

As mobile phones develop, people can do many interesting things on them. We are 7 closer with mobile phones. Texting with a smaller phone, is worse 8 using a larger phone with bigger buttons. Using computers and playing video games can cause the same problem. So more and more people found 9 with RSI. 10we don't do anything about this, too many young people would grow up in terrible pain.

根據(jù)“like talking with ___1___ by texting”可知喜歡通過發(fā)短信與 交談,可推測出此處是“朋友”,且此處是名詞復(fù)數(shù),故答案為 friends。

根據(jù)“give us problems ___2___ our hands.”

根據(jù)“we ___4___ more than 10-15 minutes texting each time”可知我們每次發(fā)短信的時(shí)間超過10-15分鐘,可推測出此處是“spend”,主句是一般過去時(shí),所以此處也是一般過去時(shí),故答案為spent。

根據(jù)“the ___5___ patient she had treated was a five-year-old girl.”

根據(jù)“is worse”可知此處是比較級(jí),可推測出此處是“than”,故答案為than。

根據(jù)“ we don't do anything about this, too many young people would grow up in terrible pain.”

When we see babies or pets, we can't help gently touching them to show our love. And they give us happy feelings back. But a recent study shows that it’s different for plants.

A study, published in The Plant Journal, shows that plants don’t like to be touched. That’s because touching changes their genes(基因) and, even worse, can slow their growth. Professor Jim Whelan in Australia gave an explanation. The lightest touch from a human, animal, insect, or even plants touching each other in the wind, leads to a huge gene change in the plant.

In order to test the theory, the scientists did an experiment on plants. They grew a number of plants to the age of four weeks. Then they touched them with a paintbrush every 12 hours over a 36-hour period. They found that as the result of the touch, the mitochondria(線粒體) in the plants had been partly destroyed. The mitochondria are the “power-house” of the cell(細(xì)胞). The mitochondria produce energy for the cells in both animals and plants. If this “power-house” is weakened, the plants will lose a large amount of energy that should have supported their growth.

Whelan further explained, “If the touching is repeated, then plant growth is reduced by 30 percent.” Although the touching does have a strong influence on plants, usually the plants can still be alive. Touching changes the plants, but it’s not always a bad change. Continually touching or moving plants will make them grow shorter than other ones. However, in some ways, this change could be helpful. It may help plants fight threats to their health such as insects and bad weather.

The new research findings have led to a deeper understanding of the plants. And the research might help with the growth of plants.

Since 1989, Dave Thomas, who died at age 69, had been one of the most recognizable faces on TV. He appeared in more than 800 commercials (商業(yè)廣告) for the hamburger chain named for his daughter. "As long as it works," he said in 1991. "I'll continue to do those commercials."

Even though he was successful, Thomas remained troubled by his childhood. "He still won't let anyone see his feet, which are out of shape because he never had proper fitting shoes, " Wendy said in 1993. Born to a single mother, he was adopted (收養(yǎng)) as a baby by Rex and Auleva Thomas of Kalamazoo in Michigan. After Auleva died when he was 5, Thomas spent years on the road as Rex traveled around seeking construction work. "He fed me," Thomas said, "and if I got out of line, he'd beat me."

Moving out on his own at 15, Thomas worked, first as a waiter, in many restaurants. But he had something much better in mind. "I thought if I owned a restaurant," he said, "I could eat for free. " When he was 24, meeting with Harland Sanders led Thomas to a career as the manager of a Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurant that made him a millionaire in 1968.

In 1969, after breaking with Sanders, Thomas started the first Wendy's Old Fashioned hamburgers, in Columbus, Ohio, which set itself apart by serving made-to-order burgers. With 6,000 restaurants worldwide, the chain now makes $ 6 billion a year in sales.

Although troubled by his own experience with adoption, Thomas, married since 1954 to Lorraine, 66, and with four grown kids besides Wendy, felt it could offer a future for other children. He started the Dave Thomas Foundation (基金會(huì)) for Adoption in 1992.

In 1993, Thomas, who had left school at 15, graduated from Coconut Creek High School in Florida. He even took Lorraine to the graduation dance party. The kids voted him Most Likely to Succeed.

"The Dave you saw on TV was the real Dave," says friend Pat Williams, "He wasn't a great actor or a great speaker. He was just Joe Everybody. "

1When did Dave Thomas begin to do commercials for the hamburger chain?

2Did Dave Thomas live a happy life or a hard life when he was young?
