【題目】 It's late evening in the middle of the winter. The snow is deep, but off I go into the wild.

Suddenly, I hear it: the howl(嚎叫)of wolves. Excitedly, I walk faster in the direction of the howling.

I've been working as a volunteer wolf tracker in Yellowstone National Park for over a year It's my job to follow wolves to record information about them. Like wolves, however, I don't work alone. I'm one of a team of people who have been in a project to help reintroduce wolves to the park.

Humans have always feared wolves. From fairy tales to movies, the wolf is always the bad guy —a danger to humans and other animals. In the 1920s, the organizers of the park shared this view about wolves and made the decision to drive them away from the park. As a result, the number of elk (麋鹿)in the park increased. The elk started looking for food near river banks since they didn't have to worry about wolves. This, in turn, stopped trees from growing along the rivers, doing great harm to the environment there.

The return of wolves has already made a big difference. To begin with, the elk soon learned to stay away from the rivers, so new trees have been able to grow there. The trees become home to new wildlife, such as birds, and provide food for more animals.

The park is now becoming more and more popular with those who want to see wolves in their natural environment. It has also helped the local people make more money. Tourists visit the area, stay in the local hotels, and eat in the local restaurants.

Looking at the wild animals and the beautiful sceneries around me, I am amazed at the changes the wolf has made to Yellowstone. And happily, it is playing a good guy in this story.

【題目】 What would you give up to protect the environment? Many people have given up animal products of all kinds. They are practicing a lifestyle called veganism(純素主義). Some people choose to become vegan(素食主義者)because they are upset about the way humans treat animals.

For many people, veganism simply means eating no meat, cheese or eggs. But the idea of saving animals also appears in the fashion and manufacturing industries (制造業(yè)).

For example, leather(皮革)is used in many products, such as shoes and clothes. Every year more than a billion animals, listing from horses to snakes, are killed so that we can use their skin to make leather products. Now, many brands are looking for other ways to make their products.

The sports brand Puma, for example, has made shoes out of pineapple(菠蘿)leaves. Tesla, the American car-maker, is reported to have stopped using leather to make its seats.

Veganism is growing in popularity. In 2017, the BBC said it was the fastest-growing lifestyle movement in the United Kingdom. At the same time, some news reported that a quarter of Americans between the ages of 25 and 34 are vegans. No wonder the map7ine named 2019 "the year of the vegan".

So, if you're interested in protecting animals and saving the environment, you might want to give veganism a try. But somebody asks: "Is veganism healthy?" 【題目】閱讀下面短文, 在空白處填入一個適當(dāng)?shù)脑~, 或填入括號中所給單詞的正確形式。

Last summer I got the chance to spend a month helping out in a hospital in Africa. I had one year left at school, and I was 1 (interest) in studying medicine at university.

It was a month that changed my life. I 2 (introduce) to a world that is very different to mine in so many ways. I was shocked at how poor so many 3 (family) over there are and how difficult their lives can be. But I was also surprised at how positively people spend 4 (they) daily lives.

The way they come together and help each other is a real inspiration, and something I think a lot of us here in the UK have forgotten. I think many of us don't realize 5lucky we are. My work in the hospital was hard. Not only did I spend a lot of time cleaning floors, but 6 I got to spend some time looking after the patients. And I got the chance 7 (talk) to some doctors and ask them about the job. I saw some truly awful things in the hospital, 8 none of them changed my mind about being a doctor. 9 fact, they only made me more determined to do medicine!

When I finish, I know 10 I'm going to do: I want to work for an international organization like the Red Cross. I can't wait to get started.

【題目】 Qomolangma is the world’s highest mountain. AYou may have learned from your textbooks that its height is 8,844 meters. But not all sides are in agreement on this. Different researchers have given different results. In addition, the height of the mountain can change over time.

That’s why a 30-member Chinese survey team set out to reach the peak of Qomolangma to re-measure its height on May 6.BThey are equipped (配備) with the latest technology, including a global navigation satellite system receiver and a radar (雷達(dá)).

It is not an easy task. The average air temperature on the mountain is -29 C – four degrees lower than in Antarctica – and powerful winds blow all the time. In such bad conditions, surveying drones (無人機(jī)) cannot work at the peak of the mountain. That’s why it’s still necessary to send human experts to the peak to get reliable (可靠的) results.

But does a difference of a few meters really matter when it comes to a high mountain?

In fact, measuring the height of Qomolangma is about more than just getting one exact number. Mount Qomolangma is at the point where the Eurasian plate (板塊) meets the Indian plate.C It formed 38 million years ago as the two plates hit each other. Changes in the peak’s height can show whether the two plates are heading toward or away from each other. This can help us understand the movement of Earth’s crust (地殼).

The survey team will also get firsthand information about environmental conditions at the top of the mountain. This will help us understand how climate change has affected the Tibet-Qinghai Plateau.
