There are 24 solar terms (節(jié)氣) in China, and the Grain Rain(谷雨) is one of them. It falls on April 19 this year.
This solar term is called the Grain Rain because it is known for “rain” that helps the grain grow. From its name, we can guess it means a time of more rain. So if you go out in the next two weeks, you may need to bring an umbrella with you.
But this is a great time for planting crops. If you miss the time for planting during the Grain Rain, you will feel sorry later. So maybe you can try to plant some flowers or vegetables in your garden. When the spring rain falls, farmers begin to grow crops (莊稼). Farmers often say, “Spring rain is as precious (珍貴的) as oil.” It brings farmers hope for a good year ahead.
There are also many interesting customs during the Grain Rain. In the northern part of China, people like to eat Chinese toon (椿芽) mixed with eggs. The food made during the Grain Rain tastes wonderful and is good for your stomach. In the southern part of China, the tea leaves are picked during the time. They are called Grain Rain tea, which is famous for its freshness and sweet smell.
1. How many solar terms are there in China?
2. Is it necessary to take an umbrella during the Grain Rain?
3.What is Grain Rain tea famous for?
4.Why is it a great time for planting crops when the Grain Rain comes?

As kids, we learn how to write, maybe play a musical instrument and draw. So why don’t we learn to code(編碼) computer programs too? What coding has in common with writing, playing music and creating art is that it lets you bring your ideas to life. Coding is all about creativity and that’s why I love it.
Creating with code
CoderDojo helps young people around the world to learn computer programming for free. When I went to my first CoderDojo class in Dublin City University in Ireland, at age nine, I didn’t know anything about coding or even what it was. But I remember making my very first web page that first day, and being surprised that I could create such a thing. It was a great feeling that I think every young person should experience!
By going to CoderDojo every week, I learned how to make websites, apps and games. One of my apps is called Auto-Journalist. It can help journalists(記者) and interviewees do interviews even if they are both really busy or live in different time zones. It is still in development, and I have showed it at an event called Coolest Projects Awards, where young people get to show the public what they have created with code. It’s so much fun to share one’s creations, and to see what everyone else has made too.
Learning environment
For the past three years I have also been helping to teach other young people at CoderDojo DCU. In recent years I have also noticed many more girls attending CoderDojo DCU to try out coding. This has a lot to do with the CoderDojo girls’ classes—girls and young women take part in it with their friends, and it doesn’t feel like coding is a “boy thing”. It is really wonderful to see this, because we need more girls and women in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths). It’s a good way to learn more about technology.
Start early
One of the main things I have learned in the last few years is that coding is not only for adults, coding is for young people, too. And when you are a child it is a great time to start coding, because your imagination is the limit for what you can create!
Want to learn more? Find out if there is a CoderDojo near you at www.coderdojo.com or set one up yourself! Also check out Code.org which has lots of fun drag-and-drop coding games.

A. It is better than playing music.
B. It limits children’s imagination.
C. It stops people from learning fast.
D. It helps children with their creativity.

A. Start Coding as Early as Possible

The Magic of Waving
It began a year ago, around Christmas.
While driving around the corner of our townhouse sports center, I always noticed an old man sitting by his front yard. He was usually smoking or drinking and looked grumpy (脾氣不好).
One day, while I was driving past him with my daughter, I decided to _________at him with a lot of excitement. At the beginning, when he noticed me waving at him, he looked a bit shocked(震驚). Then, I saw his _________go up and he waved back.
“Why did you wave at him?” my daughter asked.
I told her that it was just an act of kindness that didn’t _________anything, and it gave both him and me a sense of joy. She responded by saying that she was a bit embarrassed (局促不安) to wave to a_________, but next time she would try it as well.

Other friends made similar comments(評論), and this response taught my daughter just how much an act of kindness can be very natural and effortless, if you really want to do it. It showed us how giving happiness _________ both the giver and the receiver.
