Classical music might sound a little boring nowadays. But there was a time when it was as modern and exciting as pop music is today. This is true of Beethoven, a famous German classical musician. He was the greatest composer of his day

Beethoven studied first with his father, a singer. He wrote many songs, and you may know some of them. He won respect around the world. However, when he was first writing music around 1800, a lot of people didn't like it at all. They said it was too crazy.

Beethoven began to lose his hearing in 1801 and was deaf by 1819. At that time he was only 26, but he could still write music. He listened to vibrations from his piano, and felt the colors of the music deep with his mind: No matter how frequently performed, the works of Beethoven still attract people all over the world.

The boys also play drums and even tell jokes during their time in the hut to take their minds off the pain. Amazingly, some boys sleep during the most painful parts of the ceremony!

The Niowra believe that this ceremony makes the boys stronger and braver. After the ceremony, the boys will have the marks of the cuts on their backs and chests for the rest of their lives. The marks are symbols of the teeth of the crocodile. The boys are now crocodile men and can survive living in the dangerous forest. When the boys finally leave the crocodile hut, there is singing and dancing, and the new crocodile men are given adult responsibilities in the village.
