I was in line waiting to pay. A little boy in the front was buying some clothes.
I noticed that the little boy was paying mostly with change. It seemed that he had broken his pig bank (豬形儲蓄罐) to do this shopping. However, the cashier told him he was $ 8. 00 short after counting his money.
It was clear that the boy had already used all the money. The lady in front of me said, “Well, I could pay half of that.” I told the boy that I could pay the other half. We dug into our handbags.

Lisa has been to Antarctica (南極洲). Here is what she wrote about the trip.

Tuesday December 2

We planned to go to Rothera (羅瑟拉站) that morning. We would stay there for the next two weeks. Because Antarctica is the windiest place on the earth, sometimes you can’t fly at all.

We had a nervous wait over breakfast to find out if we’d be leaving that day. People have to stay in Stanley for weeks while the pilots wait for good weather.

It turned clear at 9:30 and we took off at 10:30 on a little red plane called a Dash-7. But even when we were in the air, there was still a chance we wouldn’t be able to fly.

Wednesday December 3

After waking up in Antarctica for the first time, I can understand why everybody who comes here loves the place. It is really beautiful.

We are staying at Rothera Survey Base (基地) with mountains of ice all around. It’s about minus 2 today. It is very cold, but the regulars here are often seen walking around in T-shirt.

Thursday December 4

I woke up to another beautiful sunny day here. It’s a bit colder today, about minus 5, but it’s not very windy so it feels warmer. Those of us who are new to the base have to do a special training course (課程) before we are allowed to go off the base to other stations or to go snowboarding over the nearby hill.

Saturday December 6

Not a cloud in the sky and it’s warm enough to sit outside (in a jacket).

The most wonderful thing about this place is how the scenery (風(fēng)景) changes every day. At first I thought I was going mad. I’d step outside in the morning and think, “I’m sure that big mountain of ice wasn’t there every day.” It’s because the sea ice is always moving—slowly and thankfully.

1Lisa had a nervous wait in Stanley because of _____________.

A.Strong windsB.Thick clouds

C.Mountain of iceD.Low temperature

2Lisa received a special training on ___________.

A.December 2B.December 3C.December 4D.December 6

3The underlined word “go off” most probably means__________.

A.leaveB.changeC.protectD.build

4What impressed (使印象深刻) Lisa most about Antarctica?

A.People walked around in T-shirtB.It was a beautiful and quiet place

C.The weather was sometimes warmD.The scenery changes every day

5According to the article, which of the following sentences is Not True?

A.Lisa will stay in Rothera Survey Base for about two weeks.

B.Lisa often sees the people wearing the thick jackets in the base.

C.Lisa can go snowboarding if she finishes the training course.

D.Lisa didn’t expect that the mountains of ice could move at first.

6The writing is most probably from Lisa’s __________.

A.notebookB.diaryC.homeworkD.book

【題目】 What happens to your computers, MP3 players and cellphones when they’re broken or you want a new one?

Most people just throw them away. In 2014, people around the world produced 41.8 million tons of electronic waste(e-waste) and only recycled 6.5 million tons, the United Nations said. The US was the biggest waster, producing 7.1 million tons of waste. China ranked second, with 6 million tons.

It’s important to pay attention to e-waste. It can either be valuable or harmful, depending on how we treat it.

“E-waste is a valuable ‘urban mine (城市礦藏)’,” said David Malone, the UN under-secretary-general (副秘書長). The gold, silver, iron () and copper () in e-waste around the world are worth some $52 billion (322.1 billion yuan). These materials can be reused and help us save resources.

But if people throw their electronics away, toxic (有毒的) chemicals can get into the soil or air, affecting the environment and people’s health. Malone said.

To help reduce e-waste, the first thing we can do is to buy longer-lasting electronic devices. If you have unwanted electronics, such as aging toys or cellphones, find a new home for them by giving them to charities. You can also see if there are any companies that offer recycling programs for their products. Apple, for instance, now offers people a discount (折扣) in China if they hand in their used devices when buying new ones. The company will test and repair the used devices and sell them at lower prices.

C.put it in a closetD.donate it to a charity

A.41.8 million tons.B.6.5 million tons.C.7.1 million tons.D.6 million tons.

A.silverB.copperC.steelD.iron

4Which of the following is TRUE?

A.China produced the most electronic waste in 2014.

B.E-waste does more harm to the environment than to people’s health.

C.People can buy new devices at lower price if they sell their old ones.

D.Some electronics companies have their own recycling programs.

5What does the story mainly tell us?

A.How much e-waste people produce each.B.What people can do to make money from e-waste.

C.Why and how we should recycle our e-waste.D.How e-waste has affected the environment.
