If you’ve tried studying when you’re tired, you know that it can seem very impossible to do well.
A study of sleep in sparrows suggests the relationship between sleep and the ability to learn may be more complicated(復雜) than people knew.
Niels C·Rattenborg, a scientist from Wisconsin-Madison, wanted to find out how the sparrows were able to deal with getting so much less sleep. He and his team brought eight wild birds into a lab and watched them for one year. They invented a game to check how well the birds could learn. In the game, the sparrows had to peck(啄)three buttons (按鈕)in a right order to get a food treat. The scientists discovered that the birds’  ability to learn the right button order depended on(依靠)two things: the time of year and the amount of sleep the birds had had.
During the migration(遷徙)season, the sparrows were restless at night and got much less sleep than usual. Even so, they were able to understand how to get the food quickly as if they’d had a regular night of sleep. Outside the migration season, they found the sparrows that got less sleep than usual had much more difficulty learning how to get the food treats than birds that had a regular sleep.
The results show that the sparrows can deal with much less sleep during the migration season than usual. If scientists can find out why, they may learn from sparrows and find ways of helping people deal with getting much less sleep. Until scientists fully understand the relationship between sleep and learning, it’s better to get plenty of sleep when preparing for an exam.

New Energy in the Twenty-first Century Energy from the wind.
All over the world, people use the power of the wind. It is a clean source of energy, and there is lots of it. But if the wind does not blow, there is no wind energy.
Energy from the water
When water moves from a high place to a lower place it has the power to make electricity. In Britain, waterpower produces enough energy to power a town with 40000 people. Waterpower gives energy without pollution, but people have to build dams(大壩) to use this kind of power, and building dams is very expensive.
Energy from the earth
There is heat in the rocks under the earth. Scientists use the heat to make geothermal(地熱的) San Francisco gets half of the energy it needs from geothermal power. This kind of energy is cheap, but it is only possible in a few places in the world.
Energy from the sun
Solar panels(鑲板) on the roofs of houses and buildings can turn energy from the sun into electricity. These panels can create enough energy to heat the whole house during winter. Solar power is clean and plentiful, but when the weather is bad, it can’t produce power.

A new study finds that plants communicate with one another to warn of danger.
We often consider plants as the furniture of the natural world. They don’t move; they don’t make sounds, they don’t seem to act on anything. But as is often the case, plants talk to each other all the time. And the language is chemical.
Over the years, scientists have reported that different types of plants, from trees to tomatoes, give out chemicals into the air to help neighboring plants. These chemical warnings can spread information about one plant’s disease or infestation(蟲害), so other plants can protect themselves. But how plants receive and act on many of the information exactly is still mysterious.
In this week’s Science Magazine, researchers in Japan offered some explanations. They have found out one chemical message and traced it all the way from beginning to end.
The scientists looked at tomato plants infested by a common pest(害蟲). To start out, they grew plants in two separate plastic spaces connected by a tube(管子). One plant was infested and placed upwind and the other was uninfested and placed downwind. The downwind plants were later exposed(暴露) to the pest. The results showed that plants near sick neighbors before were able to protect themselves better against the pest.
They found one chemical appeared more often in the exposed plants. The chemical is called HexVic. The scientists discovered where HexVic come from, and put it over healthy plants. Those plants were then able to produce HexVic. Researchers made sure that uninfested plants could fight off bugs and diseases. How do they know when to protect themselves? They are warned first by their friendly plant neighbors.
It is not a simple story, and it may be happening in more plant species than tomatoes. It may also be happening with more chemical signals that are still unknown to us. In a word, we know that plants not only communicate, but also look out for one another.
小題1:The underlined “traced” in the fourth paragraph probably means _________ here.

③  Expose the downwind plants to the pest.
④  Grow plants in two separate plastic spaces connected by a tube.
A.③①②④B.①④③②
C.④①②③D.④②①③
小題3:You can put the sentence “The researches also studied leaves from exposed plants and unexposed plants.” At the beginning of
A.Paragraph 3B.Paragraph 4
C.Paragraph 5D.Paragraph 6
小題4:Which of the following can be the best title of this passage?

The police find most criminals (罪犯) because somebody tells them who the criminals are. They find other criminals by using science and their computers. When there is a bank robbery (搶劫), the police first look through their computers for the names of the bank robbers that they know about. Then they go and talk to any of these robbers who are not in prison (監(jiān)獄). They ask them where they were when the robbery happened. If any of these people cannot give a good answer, the police will often use science to find out if one of them is the robber.
Many criminals leave something of themselves at the places of the crimes like a fingerprint or a hair. Or they take something away on their shoes or clothes, like dirt or animal hair. If they leave behind some of their blood or their hair or a piece of skin, it will have their DNA inside it.
Everyone’s DNA is different and their fingerprints are also different. So, if a criminal cuts himself during a robbery or leaves his hair, or even a small piece of skin, scientists can find out what his DNA is. The police can then ask the person they think is the robber to give them his hair or some blood and see if it has the same DNA. Many criminals are in prison today because of this kind of evidences .
根據上文內容判斷正 ( T ) 誤( F )
小題1:Usually the police find criminals because they use their computer.
小題2:The police do not usually ask criminals who are in prison about a crime because these criminals could not have done it.
小題3:The most useful evidences that criminals leave at the places of their crimes are things with their DNA in them.
小題4:Many criminals usually take something away only on their shoes after the crimes.
小題5:The story is about a bank robbery.

Not long ago, people thought babies were not able to learn things until they were five or six months old. Yet doctors in the United States say babies begin learning on their first day of life.
Scientists note that babies are strongly influenced by their environment. They say a baby will smile if her mother does something the baby likes. A baby learns to get the best care possible by smiling to please her mother or other caregivers. This is how babies learn to connect and communicate with other human beings.
One study shows that babies can learn before they are born. The researchers placed a tape recorder on the stomach of a pregnant woman. Then, they played a recording of a short story. On the day the baby was born, the researchers attempted to find if he knew the sounds of the story repeated while in his mother. They did this by placing a device in the mouth of the newborn baby.
The baby would hear the story if he moved his mouth one way. If the baby moved his mouth the other way, he would hear a different story. The researchers say the baby clearly liked the story he heard before he was born. They say the baby would move his mouth so he could hear the story again and again.
Another study shows how mothers can strongly influence social development and language skills in their children.
Researchers studied the children from the age of one month to three years. The researchers attempted to measure the sensitivity of the mothers. The women were considered sensitive if they supported their children’s activities and did not interfere (干涉) unnecessarily. They tested the children for thinking and language development when they were three years old. Also, the researchers observed the women for signs of depression (消沉).
The children of depressed women did not do as well in tests as the children of women who did not suffer from depression. The children of depressed women did poorly in tests of language skills and understanding what they hear.
These children also were less cooperative and had more problems dealing with other people. The researchers noted that the sensitivity of the mothers was important to the intelligence development of their children. Children did better when their mothers were caring, even when they suffered from depression.
小題1: According to the passage, which of the following is NOT the factor that influences intelligence development in babies?
A.The environment.B.Mother’s sensitivity.
C.Education before birth.D.Their peers (同齡人)
小題2: What is the purpose of the experiment in which newborn babies heard the stories?
A.To prove that babies can learn on the first day they are born.
B.To prove that babies can learn before they are born.
C.To show mothers can strongly influence intelligence development in their babies.
D.To indicate early education has a deep effect on the babies’ language skills.
小題3: Which group of children did the worst in tests of language skills?
A.The children of women who did not suffer from depression.
B.The children of depressed but caring mothers.
C.The children of depressed mothers who cared little for their children.
D.The children with high communication abilities.
小題4: What is the main idea of the passage?
A.Scientific findings about how intelligence develops in babies.
B.Scientific findings about how the environment has an effect on babies’ intelligence.
C.A study shows babies are not able to learn things until they are five or six months old.
D.Scientific findings about how babies develop before birth.
