Body language is an important kind of communications. When someone is winking ( 眼),he or she wants to express " I'm kidding." When someone puts hands on the waist,in some cultures he or she may be relaxed, but in others, it is a defiant stance(挑紳的姿勢).So this kind of communication can be even more important than the words.

Take winking for example. In most cases, English speakers will wink at each other to show that they are not serious about what they are saying. They may also cross their middle finger over their index finger(食指)to express the same thing.

Sometimes gestures used in different languages have different meanings. This can produce a humorous(恢諧的)effect. In Vietnam(越南)and China, the gesture for "Come here" is quite similar to that of waving "Goodbye" in English. So when speakers of these two cultures are leaving each other, if the English speaker gestures " Goodbye” ,the Eastern speaker may mistake the signal for the meaning, " Come here.”

Learning body gestures is quite difficult from textbooks. The best way to learn gestures is to stay in a foreign country to learn not only what people say but how they say it for a while. For most people, the learning of body language is an interesting and exciting part of learning a foreign language.
