Just as in face-to-face communication, there are some basic rules of behavior (行為) that should be followed
on the Internet. The basic rule is simple: treat others in the same way you would want to be treated. ① Imagine
how you'd feel if you were in the other person's shoes
.
For anything you're about to send: ask yourself, "Would I say that to the person's face?" If the answer is no,
rewrite and reread. If someone in the chat room is rude to you, you needn't to fire back. You should either
ignore (不理睬) the person, or use your chat software to block their messages. Remember to respect the beliefs
and opinions of others in the chat room.
② Offer advice when asked by newcomers, as they may not be sure what to do or how to communicate.
When someone makes a mistake, be kind about it. If you do decide to tell someone about the mistake, point it out
politely. At the same time, if you find you are wrong, be sure to correct yourself and apologize to those that you
have offended (冒犯). ③ 詢問別人諸如年齡、性別和家庭情況等隱私問題是不禮貌的。Unless you know
the person very well, and you are both comfortable with sharing personal information, or don't ask such
questions.

When I was young, I looked forward to my birthday all year. On that day, my friends and family made me
feel like the most special person in the world.
The night before my birthday each year, my parents crept into my bedroom while I was sleeping. They hung
balloons on my walls with a big sign that said Happy Birthday! When I woke up, I was always surprised!

Reading is a good habit, but the problem is, there's too much to read these days, and too little time to read
every word of it. There are hundreds of skills to help you read more in less time. Here are two skills that I think
are especially good.
Preview-if it's long and hard. Previewing is especially useful for getting a general idea of heavy reading like
long magazine articles and business reports.
    Here's how to preview.
●Read the first two paragraphs and the last two paragraphs carefully.
●Then read only the first sentence of the other paragraphs. Previewing doesn't give you all the details. It
keeps you from spending time on things you don't really want-or need-to read.
Skim-if it's short and simple. Skimming is a good way to get a general idea of light reading-like popular
magazines or the sports and entertainment of your daily paper.
    Here's how to skim.
●Get your eyes to move fast. Sweep them across each line.
●Pick up only a few key words in each line.
Everybody skims differently. You and I may not pick up the same words when we skim the same piece, but
we'll get a similar idea of what it's all about.
1. How many skills are recommended in this passage?
[     ]
A. One.
B. Two.
C. Three.
D. Four.
2. What does the underlined word "preview" mean in Chinese?
[     ]
A. 精讀
B. 默讀
C. 朗讀
D. 略讀
3. What should we NOT do when we read sports news in a daily paper according to the passage?
[     ]
A. Read the last two paragraphs carefully.
B. Get our eyes to move fast.
C. Sweep our eyes across each line.
D. Pick up only a few key words in each line.
4. What is the best title for this passage?
[     ]
A. How to read faster
B. What to read
C. When to read
D. Why we should read

A smile will tell people around you that you are a kind and friendly person. However, many people don't smile
because they think they have ugly teeth. For example, one of my classmates, Mike, doesn't have very nice
teeth, so that is why he seldom opens his mouth. He even says that he has lost cofidence because of his teeth.
So it is very important for us to look after our teeth. In fact, a lot of people have this problem. Some people
inherit teeth problems from their parents, while others' teeth are damaged because of bad habits, like heavy
smoking, eating too much sugar or not brushing teeth often. If your teeth are in bad shape, you should see
a dentist and ask for help. They can help improve your teeth and tell you how to take care of them.
Smiling can help you to feel more confident and make other people think of you as a more friendly person.
If you want to keep healthy, you should not only smile but also laugh. An Indian doctor called Kataria said that
young children should laugh about 300 times a day, while adults should laugh between 7 and 15 times a day. So
please take this chance to smile and laugh now!
1. What has made Mike lose his confidence?
[     ]
A. His bad habit.
B. His bad teeth.
C. Not smiling.
D. Eating too much sugar.
2. Many people don't smile because             .
[     ]
A. they don't like smiling
B. they think they are ugly
C. their teeth are not beautiful
D. they can't open their mouths
3. What can a dentist do according to the passage?
[     ]
A. A dentist can tell you how to improve your bad teeth.
B. A dentist can help you to take care of your bad teeth.
C. A dentist can tell you how to brush your teeth.
D. Both A and B.
4. If you want to keep healthy, you had better           .
[     ]
A. not smile often
B. laugh all the time
C. neiter smile nor laugh
D. smile and even laugh often
5. How many times should a child laugh every day in doctor Kataria's opinion?
[     ]
A. Either 300 or 30 times a day.
B. Between 7 and 15 times a day.
C. Around 300 times a day.
D. Only 30 times a day.

閱讀理解。
Never go into a supermarket hungry! This is a good piece of advice. If you go shopping for food before
lunchtime, you'll probably buy more than you plan to. Unfortunately, however, just this advice isn't enough
for consumers these days. Modern shoppers need an education in how and how not to but things at the
store. First, you check the weekly newspaper ads. Find out the items that are on sale and decide if you really
need these things. In other words, don't but anything just because it's cheaper than usual! "New and
Improved!" or "All Natural" on the front of a package influence you. Instead, read the list of ingredients
(成分) on the back. Third, compare prices: that is, you should examine the prices of both different brands
and different sizes of the same brand.
Another suggestion for customers is to buy ordinary items instead of famous brands. Ordinary items in
supermarkets come in plain packages. These products are cheaper because producers don't spend much
money on packing or advertising. The quality, however, is usually as good as the quality of well-known
name brands. In the same way, in buying clothes, you often find high quality and low pices in brands that
are not famous. Shopping on discount clothing stores can help you save a lot of money. Although these
stores aren't very attractive, and they usually do not have individual dressing rooms, not only are the prices
low, but you can often find the same famous brands that you find in high-priced department stores.
Wise consumers read magazine ads and watch TV commercials, but they do this with one advantage:
knowledge of the psychology behind the ads. In other words, well-informed consumers watch for information
and heck for misinformation. They ask themselves questions: Is the advertiser hiding something in small print
at the bottom of the page? Is there any real information in the commercial, or is the advertiser simply showing
an attractive image? With the answers to these questions, consumers can make a wise choice.
1. Before you decide to buy things you should ____.
[     ]
A. make sure whether they are on sale
B. consider if you really need them
C. examine the prices of different brands
D. read the words on the front of the package
2. The writer suggests consumers buy ordinary products because ____.
[     ]
A. they come in plain package
B. they are advertised on newspapers
C. they are both good and cheaper
D. the quality is better than that of famous ones
3. The main idea of the last paragraph is that ____.
[     ]
A. ads and commercials sometimes tell lies
B. advertisements sometime hide some information
C. good consumers never read ads and commercials
D. we should make good use of ads and commercials
