“Please don’t go to Wuhan if it isn’t really necessary,” Zhong Nanshan, a famous doctor, said to the public when the 2019-nCoV hit (襲擊) Wuhan. But Zhong, 84, took an overnight train to Wuhan to fight against it.

Many Chinese know Zhong as a hero in SARS in 2003. People share his photos and words online, saying they “follow every word of Zhong”. He gives Chinese people hope to win this battle (戰(zhàn)役).

A great doctor

Zhong comes from a family of doctors. He wants to save as many lives as possible. In 2003, when SARS hit China, he went to treat the sickest patients. After months, his treatment plan for SARS was adopted (采納) by China and then the whole world. And it saved thousands of lives.

Back to the frontlines

Seventeen years later, Zhong is once again leading a team to fight the 2019-nCoV. Although this new virus may be more dangerous to old people, Zhong worries little about his own safety.

He takes a high-speed train from Guangzhou to Wuhan. Then he becomes the first expert to tell people that the virus can be spread (傳播) between humans. Then his team developed a rapid test kit (快速檢測試劑盒) for the disease that can show results within 15 minutes.

As People’s Daily writes, “the 84-year-old Zhong Nanshan shows what the backbone (脊梁) of our nation is like.”

Have you ever forgotten where your socks are when you wake up in the morning? Can you remember what you ate for lunch a week ago? You may think that being forgetful is not a good thing. But now you should be thankful.

Scientists from University of Toronto found that forgetting actually is a key part of learning. Getting rid of (除去) unnecessary information can help our brains work better.

What kind of information is unnecessary? Scientists say that this may have something to do with the environment you live in.

In an environment that is always changing, our brains may require us to remember less. For example, a supermarket cashier (收銀員) meets many people every day and will probably only remember them for a short time. But a designer (設計師) who often meets his or her clients (客戶) will remember longer.

“That’s because our brains keep making new neurons (神經(jīng)元) from stem cells (干細胞). ”said Paul Frankland, a professor at the University of Toronto.

There is a special area in our brains called hippocampus (海馬體). It is important for us to learn and remember. When new neurons fit in the hippocampus, they renew our old memories. This could explain why you forget so much information about the time when you were very young.

However, being forgetful is not always good. When you don’t have enough sleep, you may have a hard time remembering new information. Sleep helps the brain store and keep new facts and information. Matthew Walker from the University of California told the Huffington Post.

Do you want to be successful in everything you do? If so, then how? Here is an example.

Once there’s a farmer in the village. He grows corn(玉米)all his life. Each year, he takes his corn to the market. Then each time, his corn is the best. Therefore, he often wins the first prize.

One year, a newspaper reporter interviews him about how he grows it. His answer makes all very surprised, he says, “I give my corn seed(種子)to my neighbors.”

“How can you share your best corn seed with your neighbors?” the reporter asks, “You know they are taking part in the competition with you each year.”

“Why not, Sir?” says the farmer, “Don’t you know the wind picks up pollen(花粉)from corn and moves itquickly from field to field? If my neighbors grow bad corn, then cross-pollination(異花傳粉)will affect(影響)the quality(品質(zhì))of mine. So if I want to grow good corn, I must help my neighbors to grow good one.”
