When I first went to Britain, a lot of things seemed strange to me. For example, people drove on the left side of the road and many people carried an umbrella all the time. There were also many other things that I found really.

The first thing I noticed was how polite British people were. When I got on the bus, the driver would greet me; when people got off the bus, they would say “Thank you” to the driver; when I went into a shop, I would be greeted by a smiling salesman who would say, “Can I help you?”

The family I stayed with were very nice, but their house was full of oddities (怪現(xiàn)象). Firstly, there were carpets (地毯) everywhere, even in the bathroom. Also, the bathroom was full of surprises. The first time I tried to wash my hands I burned myself. The cold and hot water came out of different taps (水龍頭)! Then, when I tried to dry my hair I couldn't find a socket (插座) for my hairdryer. Maybe that wasn't such a big surprise. More surprising was the fact that British people didn't take their shoes off when they went into a house — can you imagine?

I guess that for British people all of these things are normal. It's only when you visit a foreign country that you realize that what you think is normal is not. Normality depends on where you are.

1.The best word for “” is “______”.

A. successful B. traditional C. exciting D. surprising

2.How many examples are given to show that British people are polite?

A. 1. B. 2. C. 3. D. 4.

3.What happened when the writer first tried to wash his hands in his host family?

A. He burned his hands. B. He couldn't find the tap.

C. There wasn't any water in the tap. D. There was only cold water in the tap.

4.What does the writer think it is normal to do when entering a house?

A. To take your hat off. B. To wash your hands.

C. To take your shoes off. D. To leave your umbrella out.

5.How does the writer develop the passage?

A. By telling a short story.

B. By providing some examples.

C. By showing different opinions.

D. By comparing research results.

When you are learning English, you find it not clever to put an English sentence, word for word, into your own language.Take the sentence “How do you do?” for example. If you look up each word in the dictionary, one at a time, what is your translation? It must be a wrong sentence in your own language.

Languages don't just have different sounds, they are different in many ways. It's important to learn the rules for word order in the study of English, too. If the speakers put words in a wrong order, the listener can't understand the speakers' sentence easily.Sometimes when the order of words in an English sentence is changed, the meaning of the sentence changes. But sometimes the order is changed, the meaning of the sentence doesn't change.Let's see the difference between the two pairs of sentences.

“She only likes apples.”“Only she likes apples.”“I have seen the film already.”“I have already seen the film.”

If tourists cause too much traffic, the local people will feel unhappy. They begin to dislike tourists and treat them impolitely. But they forget how much tourism can help the local economy(經(jīng)濟). It is important to think about how tourism affects the local people. The local customs and beauty should be kept to attract the tourists by the local government. The local government should also care about the health and happiness of local people when developing tourism.

Too much tourism can he a problem. If tourism grows too quickly, people can leave other jobs to work in the tourism industry because they can make more money there. As a result, other parts of the local economy can become worse.

On the other hand, if there is not enough tourism, people can lose jobs, and businesses can also lose money. It coats much money to build large hotels, airports, first?class roads, and other support facilities(設(shè)施) needed by tourist attractions. For example, each room of the first?class tourism hotel usually costs about 50 thousand dollars. If the rooms of the hotel aren't used most of the time, the owner of the hotel will lose money.

Building a hotel is just a beginning. There must be many support facilities as well, including roads to get to the hotel, electricity and so on. All of these support facilities cost money. If these facilities are not used because there are not enough tourists, jobs and money are lost.

Autumn days give us some fantastic and lively colors. Then, suddenly,

the city is covered (覆蓋) with a thick sheet of snow. It is during this

special time of year that one of the most popular and enjoyed holidays

in America appears: Christmas. This time is so special that schools

often give students a two-week- break from their schoolwork to enjoy

the winter holidays.

My family takes this chance to spend two weeks together. We build a tree and decorate it with many colorful lights. On top of the tree, we put a glowing star. As night sets in, the dark room is warmly lit up by a bright Christmas tree.

Then, on Christmas Eve (前夕), our family has all the traditional American foods: turkey, sweet potatoes, vegetables, nuts, pies, and other good dishes. On this very night, there is a mysterious (神秘的) story, named Santa Claus, will fly from the North Pole and give presents to the children under the Christmas tree. However, Santa only gives presents to those who have behaved well the whole year. So children across America try to do one last good deed before the night by baking (烘烤) Santa some cookies, trying to ask him for presents. This is why Santa is so fat!
