HONG KONG-Nine out of ten Singapore citizens returned dropped wallets with money in them, but in Hong Kong only three out of 10 wallets were returned in an honesty test carried out in Asian cities by Readers Digest(讀者文摘).
Larger cities did worse while in general people in smaller places returned secretly planted wallets, results from the experiment showed.
Readers Digest secretly scattered 140 wallets all over Asia, each with a name, address and phone number, family pictures, notes and money in it.
The magazine workers then watched to see what happened.
South Koreans in Seoul returned six out of the ten dropped wallets, while those in Inchon returned eight. 50 percent of the dropped wallets were returned in Bombay, Bangkok, Taipei and Kajang in Malaysia, with most people saying they would not keep what was not rightfully theirs.
Honesty had little relation to wealth or status(地位),as several well-dressed people in a number of cities were observed to walk away without doing anything to get in touch with the rightful owners.
About 57 percent of the wallets were returned, compared with 28 percent in Europe in a similar experiment and 67 percent in the United States.

Children’s lives have changed a lot in the past few years. But do they have a happier childhood than we did?
1. I have four brothers and sisters, and my memories are all about being with them. We used to play board games in the living room, spend days in the street with other children, race up and down on our bikes, or explore the nearby woods.2. They only appeared during meals.
These days, at least in the UK, the nature of childhood has changed. Firstly, families are smaller. It is common for both parents to work outside. 3. Another change is that children spend most of their free time at home, inside. Parents worry too much about some possible dangers, so they don’t want their children to play outside by themselves.
Finally, the kinds of toys children have and the ways they play are completely different. 4. The funny thing is that so many ways of playing games are called “ interactive (互動的)”. The fact that you can play electronic games by yourself can increase the feeling of loneliness.
5. I can’t give an answer for sure, but perhaps every generation feels exactly the same.

It’s known that Chinese women in the past weren't given the right to receive a form education. But this doesn’t mean that they made no efforts to learn. One of the proofs is Nushu—literally meaning “female script”(女性書法)一a written language that was used by women in Jiangyong county, Hunan province.
This script was only used by women. It was developed from written Chinese. Hundreds of years ago, Nushu was taught at home by elderly women to girls. And during gatherings in villages women would use it to write poems to express the emotions they were hiding from men.People often regard the characters as symbols of some secret cults(邪教)”. But the fact is that many old poems written in Nushu talked about the women's difficulties in life and how they made it through hardship . The words were full of encouragement and positive energy.
After women got the right to attend school,Nushu gradually lost its functionality(功 能). But the spirit of Nushu is still important and meaningful for our society in modern times. Zhao Liming, a professor at Tsinghua University, started a project to keep Nushu alive because she was worried that this ancient culture will soon disappear. One of the project’s recent achievements is an app designed by Talkmate, to teach Nushu to more people. The app has been showed to people in September during the first Beijing International Language & Culture Expo. Zhao expects the app to present a true image of Nushu to the public in order that more people will be interested in Nushu.

Hello Sandy,
We have just returned from our holiday. We went with our friends Edward Smith and his wife Tina to the Yorkshire Moors. This is a beautiful place. It is a natural park. There are lots of places to walk on the tops of the hills, miles of grassland with no people, just sheep and birds.
Edward, who had just come out of hospital, could not walk as far as be used to. However this meant that we walked in the mornings, and then stopped at a cafe for lunch each day, before returning to the place we live. Edward and I slept in front of the fire all afternoon, while the ladies went for another walk. Very pleasant!
I have taken lots of photos from the place we live, across the valley(峽谷)below us, of the morning sunrise, and the mist in the valley. Also, in England, the old steam powered trains(蒸汽火車)are very popular. I have taken many photos of the train and from it.
Yesterday we had the first snow of this winter. It is very early (we usually expect snow in January). It rained all day, then snowed in the evening. Today we have bright sunshine!
Both Jenny and I are well I don’t know if I told you, in the last e-mail, that Jenny is now working in a hotel. Although she has to work hard, people there are nice and she is enjoying the work.
Please write to us to tell us your news.
Yours,
Victor
