To protect the environment, supermarkets all over China stopped providing free plastic bags from June 1st, 2008. If you don't want to pay money to buy them, you'll have to bring your own

made of used materials like used paper, old newspapers. Some were made of eco - materials like
bamboo.
A boy student, Wang Lin made his bag with several old newspapers. We asked him whether the bag was strong enough. Wang Lin said it was. "No problem. I took six bottles of water in the bag from the
shop to my home yesterday evening," he said. "I think it's strong enough to hold even ten bottles of water. "
Fang Yuanyuan, a girl student, had a more traditional way to make her bag-a bamboo basket.  "It was a hard job," she said. "With my grandfather's help, I spent a whole afternoon making it. "

It's important to learn about protecting our environment. Here is a 5R rule for us:
     1. Reduce
If you want to reduce waste, you should use things wisely. Millions of trees are being cut down to make
paper. If everyone uses a little paper carelessly and throw it out, soon we would not have any trees left.
Other things are also being wasted, and people don't know what to do with the waste in big cities. So it is
  necessary to reduce the waste
     2. Reuse
You should always think of reusing the usable things before throwing them out. Give your clothes you
do not use or the ones which are too small to the poor. With a family, you may pass on such clothes to
 younger brothers or sisters.
     3.  Recycle
Bottles, cans and paper can easily be recycled. By doing so, we save lots of time and money. For
example, coke cans are sent to a factory, where they are smashed flat (壓平) and melted (融化) and the
melted things are made for new coke cans.
     4.  Recover
When you buy a box of apples, there may be a few rotten(腐爛的)apples. You have two choices: one
is to throw the whole apple away, or you could cut off the rotten parts and eat the good parts. In this
way, you are recovering the eatable parts of food.
     5.  Repair
If one of the legs of your table is broken, you can repair it instead of throwing it away. If you want to
change for better ones, It is better for you to sell the old things or give them to other people who can use
them after doing some repair. It is true that North America is a "throw-away" society(社會). But the time
has come to change our way of life so that we can protect our environment. Every one of us should try
 our best.
1. _____ can be recycled.
    A. Only hard things
    B. Many things
    C. Few soft things
    D. All things
2. The "recover" rule mainly requires us _____.
    A. to throw waste things away
    B. to cover waste things with earth
    C. to get back the useful parts
    D. to throw the whole things away
3. We can infer (推斷) that the writer of this passage may live in _____.
    A. China
    B. Japan
    C. Australia
    D. America
4. Which of the following is true?
    A. We will have no resources(資源) of nature unless we can do with the waste.
    B. Recycling is the best way to save resources.
    C. If we waste less, we can save more resources of nature.
    D. More things are wasted in developed countries than in developing ones.

NOT all memories are sweet. Some people spend all their lives trying to
forget bad experiences. Violence and traffic accidents can leave people with
terrible physical and emotional scars. Often they relive these experiences in
nightmares.
Now American researchers think they are close to developing a pill, which
will help people forget bad memories. The pill is designed to be taken
immediately after a frightening experience. They hope it might reduce ,or
possibly erase(抹去),the effect of painful memories.
In November, experts tested a drug on people in the US and France. The
drug stops the body releasing chemicals that fix memories in the brain. So far the
research has suggested that only the emotional effects of memories may be
reduced, not that the memories are erased.
The research has caused a great deal of argument. Some think it is a bad
idea, while others support it.
Supporters say it could lead to pills that prevent or treat soldiers' troubling
memories after war. They say that there are many people who suffer from terrible
memories.
"Some memories can ruin people's lives. They come back to you when you
don't want to have them in a daydream or nightmare. They usually come with
very painful emotions,” said Roger Pitman, a professor of psychiatry at Harvard
Medical School. “This could relieve a lot of that suffering."
But those who are against the research say that changing memories is very
dangerous because memories give us our identity (特質(zhì)). They also help us all
avoid the mistakes of the past.
"All of us can think of bad events in our lives that were horrible at the time
but make us who we are. I'm not sure we want to wipe those memories out," said
Rebecca Dresser, a medical ethicist.
1. The passage is mainly about _____.
A. a new medical invention
B. a new research on the pill
C. a way of erasing painful memories
D. an argument about the research on the pill
2. The drug tested on people can _____.
A. cause the brain to fix memories
B. stop people remembering bad experiences
C. prevent body producing certain chemicals
D. Wipe out the emotional effects of memories
3. We can infer from the passage that _____.
A. people doubt the effects of the pills
B. the pill will stop people's bad experiences
C. taking the pill will do harm to people's health
D. the pill has probably been produced in America
4. Which of the following does Rebecca Dresser agree with?
A. Some memories can ruin people's lives.
B. People want to get rid of bad memories.
C. Experiencing bad events makes us different from others.
D. The pill will reduce people's sufferings from bad memories.

We parents like to make sure that our children are eating well and getting all the nutrients (營養(yǎng)) they
need. Children need two or three kinds of vegetables every day.
A simple way to get children to eat vegetables is eating them ourselves. Following our habit, they may
start eating vegetables. Don't say things like, "if you eat your vegetables, you can have desserts." These
methods work for a little while but can possibly lead them to hate vegetables more. Giving your children
new varieties (多樣性) which will help her or him develop a taste for trying new things.
Sometimes the simple things just don't work. We have to start becoming a little creative when it comes
to making our children eat these vegetables. By doing this in the beginning when they are small, it will
hopefully help them learn to love vegetables.
Think of creative ways to make children eat vegetables. For example, cut up vegetables like carrots,
tomatoes, and assemble (集合) a creative way on a plate for an afternoon snack. Or try using cheese
sauce either by dipping (浸) vegetables or by putting the cheese right on top of the uncooked vegetables.
If you prefer, you can also add a teaspoon of sugar on top of cooked green beans and peas to give
them a little sweeter taste. Doing this shouldn't lead to a sweet tooth as long as you only give them a small
  amount.
If you have a child that refuses to eat vegetables, some of these suggestions I've listed will help to turn
that around. In the end, you're not just getting them to eat vegetables, you are helping them to live a
 healthier lifestyle.
1. According to the text, all the following ways to get children to eat vegetables are creative
   EXCET _____.
    A. making vegetables much sweeter
    B. putting cheese on top of vegetables
    C. preparing carrots in an attractive way
    D. adding some cheese sauce to vegetables
2. If you want your children to develop the habit of eating vegetables, you should         .
    A. be very patient to them
    B. set an example to them
    C. give dessert to them as an award
    D. cut vegetables into different types
3. Which of the following is Not true according to the passage?
    A. Children need to eat vegetables every day.
    B. Parents should help children live a healthy lifestyle.
    C. Sugar can make children keep a healthy lifestyle.
    D. It is necessary to think of creative ways to make children eat vegetables.
