How do you remember the way to your house? Where do dreams come from? It is your brain (大腦) that
does these things. A British scientist showed that "sleep can improve one's memory." It's not a dream for
students to study when they sleep. In fact, your brains is working day and night. If you learn words before
bed, a certain part of the brain may help you to remember the words while you sleep. What's more, another
scientist in the USA found that there was a "talent button (天才按鈕)" in the human brain. It might make a
person more talented.
There are more interesting things about the brain. Your brain uses less energy than a fridge light. Just two
bananas can give the brain enough energy to work for a whole day. According to some scientists, yawning (打哈欠) keeps our brains "cool", which makes us think quicker.
Here are some pieces of advice to keep a good brain:
     ● Eat healthy food.
     ● Get a lot of playtime or exercise.
     ● Don't drink or smoke.
     ● Use your brain a lot.
1. A British scientist found out that ________ could improve our memories.
A. drink
B. dreams
C. sleep
D. bananas
2. According to the passage, if we want to have a good brain, we should ________.
A. use our brains more
B. sleep fewer hours
C. work longer hours

Fashion isn't very environmentally-friendly because it makes people buy things they don't need, just
because they're new. We want to take care of the environment, we don't want to pollute the air and we
don't want to waste energy and resources. But we also want to be fashiona-ble. How can we buy fashionable
clothes and protect the environment?
Old styles are fashionable again, so one way is to buy second-hand clothes - recycled clothes. Another
way is to buy fair trade clothes. These clothes are either recycled or made in a way that protects the
environment. They also protect the people who make the clothes.
Surprisingly, white cotton is one of the least environmentally-friendly crops of all. To protect the cotton,
the growers use chemicals that pollute water, make farm workers ill and kill wildlife. New materials, such as
hemp and bamboo, grow quickly and are more environmentally-friendly. These materials are very soft, and
look fantastic. The best materials are coloured using natural dyes, made from plants.
Environmentally-friendly clothes are practical but until now they were often dull. Now fashion-designers
are working with these materials and the clothes are beautiful as well. So now we can buy fashionable clothes
that are also environmentally-friendly.
1. Why do people often buy things they don't need? Because ________.
A. new things can be more comfortable
B. everyone wants to be fashionable
C. people are richer than before now
D. people care about the environment

One cool April 22 mornig, people started the day as usual. Yet it was not a normal day. What's so special
about April 22? The answer is simple. It is Earth Day People all over the world celebrate this important day.
The idea of having a special day to celebrate Earth began in the 1960s. Life was very different then. Few
people talked or even thought ahout the environment. Most people had no idea how dirty our air and water
were.
On April 22, 1970, twenty million (百萬) Americans joined the first Earth Day activities. They showed
that people really did want to do something about the environment.  Since then laws have been passed to
protect the air, water, land, and animals.
The vehicles such as cars and buses you ride in must pass tests to make sure they don't cause too much
pollution.  Thanks to this law, cars today release (排放) about half as many bad chemicals as cars did back
in 1970. As a result, the air we breathe is cleaner than it once was.
Rivers and lakes are also cleaner today than they were in the 1970s. It's a good thing because they needed
a lot of help.  The Cuyahoga River in Ohio was so polluted that rubbish and oil on the river even caught fire!
Today, the river is cleaner. It no longer burns. It's healthy enough for birds, fish, and other animals.
Now the celebration has spread to other countries. More than 175 countries take part each year.
In 2007, people in China paid much attention to a big problem.  People were throwing away 27 million
plastic bags a day ! People had "Bye-Bye Throwaway CultureWeek." They wanted everyone to see how
polluted it was to throw away so many plastic bags.  In 2008, China passed new laws against them.
Every April 22, millions get together to clean and protect Earth. They also celebrate how far we have
come.  Our job is to put this knowledge to work.  You can help keep our planet healthy too!

1.  Is Earth Day on April 22?
     ____________________________________________________________
2. What caught fire on the Cuyahoga River?
     ____________________________________________________________
3. How many countries take part in the celebration each year now?
     ____________________________________________________________
4.  Why did Chinese people have "Bye-Bye Throwaway Culture Week" ?

5. What are the purposes of celebrating the Earth Day?
