Did you see snow in your home town last winter? Did you feel it was warmer than before? “There have been 21 warm winters in China since 1986,” said scientists. They also said that in the past 100 years, as the global(全球的) temperatures went up by 0.74 oC, the temperature in North China has gone up by 1.4 oC in only 50 years.
China needs to take quick action to cut carbon dioxide emission(排放), because it’s the main reason for global warming. We plan to cut energy use by 20% and pollution emission by 10% in the 11th Five-Year Plan.
Can you slow global warming? Sure! You and your family can take steps to cut the amount of carbon dioxide that is sent out into the air.
Here are some pieces of advice to help you save the earth.
Wear used clothes. Wearing your brother’s, sister’s or dad’s old T-shirts means you save the energy.
Ride on the bus. Taking a bus saves a lot of oil every year.
Open the window. Don’t use the air conditioner(空調(diào)), and let some fresh air in. When you have to use it, set the temperature higher in summer and lower in winter to save energy.
Make small changes in your daily life. Don’t use paper cups, bags and boxes.
It’s time for all of us to do something to save the earth.

Don Ritchie, a famous Australian man. For nearly 50 years, he successfully stopped 160 people from killing themselves at a cliff(懸崖) called ‘the Gap’ – with just a kind word and a smile.
Ritchie had served in the Royal Australian Navy during World War II. In 1964, he moved into a house on Old South Head Road. He began saving strangers soon after.
Ritchie was a real gentleman who purposely chose to live right across the street from ‘the Gap’, just because he wanted to continue saving lives. He would wake up every morning and look out of the window for anyone standing too close to the edge of the cliff. If he saw someone and thought they might jump, he would simply walk over with a smile and say, “Is there something I could do to help you?” That sounds very simple, but it worked – Ritchie tried to have a talk with these people and ended up inviting them back to his house for tea or breakfast.
In 2006, Ritchie was given the Medal of the Order of Australia for all his saving lives. In 2010, he and his wife were named Woollahra Council’s citizens of the year and in 2011, he was given the Local Hero Award for Australia by the National Australia Day Council.
In a situation where most would turn a blind eye, Don has taken action. With such simple actions Don has saved a number of lives. Don’s story touched the hearts of all Australians and challenged us to rethink what it means to be a good neighbor.
1.What is the nationality of Don Ritchie?
A. American. B. Canadian.
C. Australian. D. Britain.
2.Why did he choose to live right across the street from ‘the Gap’?
A. Because he wanted to be proud of himself.
B. Because he wanted to continue saving lives.
C. Because he would like to talk with strangers.
D. Because he would like to enjoy the view outside.
3.When was he given the Local Hero Award for Australia?
A. In 1964. B. In 2006.
C. In 2010. D. In 2011.
4.What can we learn from the passage?
A. It’s important for him to get these prizes.
B. He saved people through giving them money.
C. We should rethink how to be a good neighbour.
D. He stopped 210 people from killing themselves.
