Tony Bennett, the American singer recently touring Britain, can’t remember how many times he has sung his standard hit “I Left My Heart in San Francisco”. He sang it again to his audience at the London Palladium last night. “I never get tired of singing it,” he said. “I like it too much. It’s a great city and it’s a good song.” Bennett is to record a TV special with American singer Lena Home while he is here. And a new LP recorded by him in London for Philips titled “Listen Easy” will be published in June. “I like it here,” he added quietly over whiskey. “I would like to live here so many months of the year.” He already keeps a large flat in Grosvenor Square, where he is staying with his actress wife Sandie Grant and their three-year-old daughter Joanna. The meaning of silence varies among cultural groups. Silences may be thoughtful, or they may be empty when a person has nothing to say. A silence in a conversation may also show stubbornness, uneasiness, or worry. Silence perhaps viewed by some cultural groups as quite uncomfortable; therefore tries may be made to fill every gap (間隙) with conversation. Persons in other cultural groups value silence and view it as necessary for understanding a person’s needs.
Many local Americans value silence and feel it is a basic part of communicating among people, just as some traditional Chinese and Thai persons do. Therefore, when a person from one of these cultures is speaking and suddenly stops, what perhaps shows is that the man wants the listener to consider what has been said before continuing. In these cultures, silence is a call for reflection(反應(yīng)).
Other cultures may use silence in other ways, particularly when dealing with conflicts(沖突) among people or in relationships of people with different amounts of power. For example, Russian, French, and Spanish persons may use silence to show agreement between parties about the topic under discussion. However, Mexicans may use silence when instructions are given by a person in power rather than be rude to that person by arguing with him or her. In still another use, persons in Asian cultures may view silence as a sign of respect, especially to an elder or a person in power.
Nurses and other care-givers need to realize the possible meanings of silence when they come across the personal anxiety(焦慮)their patients may be experiencing. Nurses should learn about their own personal and cultural situation of silence so that a patient’s silence is not stopped too early or allowed to go on unnecessarily. A nurse who understands the curing value of silence can use this understanding to help in the care of patients from their own and from other cultures.
1.Which of the following people might regard silence as a call for careful thought?
A. The Chinese. B. The French. C. The Mexicans. D. The Russians.
2.What does the writer advise nurses to do about silence?
A. Let it continue as the patient pleases. B. Break it while treating patients.
C. Study its harm to patients. D. Make use of its healing effects.
3.What may be the best title for the text?
A. Sound and Silence B. What It Means to Be Silent
C. Silence to Native Americans D. Speech Is Silver; Silence Is Gold

When I was in the sixth grade, I became a big K-pop (Korean pop) fan. Almost half the students at my middle school were Korean and almost all of them listened to Korean music, especially K-pop. I had never been interested in it. It sounded too strange to me, but all changed in the sixth grade when the huge hit Gee came out. All my friends were singing the chorus and imitating the dance. Gee fever sucked me into K-pop. It became my life. I listened to K-pop non-stop and filled my iPod with it. In a month, I had memorized the names of countless members of boy and girl bands and stuck pictures of my singer "boyfriends" on my walls. I would ditch my weekend art and math classes and go to concerts with my friends. This would always result in my mom shouting that I was wasting my life. My mom thought K-pop was trash and wanted me to like classical music as she did. But classical music made me sleepy.
Every day during middle school I went to a K-pop gossip and news site called allkpop.com. On this site I learned that I could audition(試音) to become a singer in a K-pop band. The shining clothes, thousands of screaming fans and hearing them chant my name seemed much more exciting than being a middle school student. Becoming a K-pop star was all I wanted.
I started watching the audition videos of current stars and reading blog posts from people who had auditioned. They explained much about the audition. This made me want to audition even more. After watching those videos, I saw that most of the current stars weren’t that amazing in their auditions and that each singer had improved so much through training. I had never had vocal lessons(聲樂課) and didn’t think of myself as a good singer. “But if they could do it, I could do that too,” I thought.
1.What caused the author to fall in love with K-pop?
A. Her Korean origin. B. A new style of dance.
C. Her friends’ influence. D. The popularity of Gee.
2.The underlined word "ditch" in Paragraph 1 probably means "________".
A. forget B. attend C. ignore D. hate
3.What do we know about the author’s mother?
A. She has no interest in music. B. She has a low opinion of K-pop.
C. She doesn’t care about her daughter. D. She prefers K-pop to classical music.
4.After visiting allkpop.com, the author ________.
A. dreamed of becoming a pop singer B. called the manager of the news site
C. contacted people who had auditioned D. knew she would never become a singer

When I spent Christmas away from home in Europe for the first time, I was only 14 and it was certainly terrible. I am now married and live in the US. So there is little possibility for me to go home for Christmas. Now I am able to get through Christmas with some moments of joy:
First, you are advised to search your area for stores that carry items from your home country or town. Buy food, candles and some other things that mean something to you.
Hold on to the traditions from your home that you think are important even if other people think they are stupid. But keep in mind to be open for new traditions from wherever you might be, because those traditions are as important to those people around you as yours are to you. For me that includes celebrating Christmas on the 24th.
Call, write Christmas cards, buy gifts and mail them to loved ones, just as if you were there. If you try to be as if the holiday doesn't exist, you are just going to make it worse.
Introduce your traditions to your loved ones, especially your kids. It will only enrich their celebration of the holiday to have some special traditions in their home. Little by little it will become their tradition and it’s fun for them to try something new.
Food is one of the most important factors in any kind of tradition. Find the recipe (食譜) of that cake your grandmother used and make it your tradition to bake that particular cake.
Call up your parents and get them to send you some of your favorite childhood ornaments (裝飾品) for your tree.
Pay attention to new traditions, talk to your family about which ones you want to make your own and stick with them.
If you are far away from home, Christmas can never be the same as you experienced it before, but it is important to remember these traditions while enjoying the new ones.
Title: Getting through Christmas

Conclusion | 1.It is important to remember these traditions while enjoying the new ones. 2.Keep an open mind and find a 5. between old and new traditions. |
