In the past ten years, many scientists have studied the differences between men and women. And they all got the same answer: The sexes(性別) are different, because their brains(大腦) are different. And this, the scientists say, makes men and women see the world in different ways.
Boys, for example, usually are better than girls at mathematical ideas. Boys also are better than girls at the kind of hand and eye movements necessary for ball sports. Girls, on the other hand, usually start speaking earlier than boys. And they often see better in the dark than boys and are better at learning foreign languages.
What makes men and women better at one thing or another? The answer is the brain. The brain has two sides connected by nerve(神經(jīng)) tracks(軌道). The left side usually is used for mathematics, speech and writing. The right side is used for artistic(藝術) creation and the expression(表達) for emotions(情感). In men and women, different areas in each side of the brain develop differently. In boys, for example, it’s the area used for mathematics. In girls, it is the area used for language skills. Another interesting difference is that the two sides of a man’s brain are connected by smaller nerves than the two sides of a woman’s brain are.

I was telling my boy Sonny the story of the hare (兔子) and the tortoise (烏龜). At the end I said.“Son, remember: Slow and steady (穩(wěn)固的) wins the race. Don’t you think there’s something to learn from the tortoise?”
Sonny opened his eyes wide, “Do you mean next time when I’m participating(參加) in the 60-metre race I should wish that Billy and Tony and Sandy would all fall asleep halfway?”
I was shocked, “But the tortoise didn’t wish that the hare would fall asleep on the way!”
“He must have wished that,” Sonny said. “Otherwise how could he be so stupid as to race with the hare? He knew very well the hare ran a hundred times faster than he himself did.”
“He didn’t have such a wish,” I insisted, “He won the race by perseverance(堅持), by pushing on steadily.”
Sonny thought a while. “That’s a lie,” he said. “He won it because he was lucky. If the hare hadn’t happened to fall asleep, the tortoise would never have won the race. He could be as steady as you like, or a hundred times steadier, but he’d never have won the race. That’s for sure.”

Earthquakes can be very scary(嚇人的). But you need to keep your mind stable (堅定的) in order to make sure you are safe. Be calm and try not to run here and there.
If you manage to come out of your house, go to an open space like a garden or a park where you will be a lot safer. If you live quite some floors above in your building, try to find a place near a bulky object such as a bed. Curl up (蜷縮) and sit on the floor and make sure you are not near a window, fireplace, gas stove and so on. Remember don’t use lifts or escalators.
Some people say you should stand on a doorway. That is not true. If the doorway jambs (側壁) are weak, they might fall on you. Also if people want to pass through that door, you may stop them. Leave all doorways free.
Another important thing to keep in mind is that you mustn’t climb down the stairs during an Earthquake. If the tremors (震動) stop, after a few seconds, just climb down the stairs as quickly as you can and move out of the building, but don’t run.
Earthquakes usually destroy gas pipes and electrical wires. Turn off the main gas. And don’t light candles or lighters and create an even bigger disaster.
