Do you have any online classes? It is possible to take classes at home. All you need is a computer and a headset(套頭耳機).

However, most students don't seem to like online classes. According to a recent survey, only 33 percent of students would take such classes. Over 1, 500 students from 10 cities took the survey.

Many students said it is hard to pay attention to studying while taking online classes. When 4-year-old British Prince George started his first day of school in September, 2017, Chinese language was on his course.

And he wasn't alone According to a report in September, about 51 percent of UK parents want their children to learn Chinese, as it's believed to be one of the most useful languages to know.

In fact, the popularity of Chinese drove the UK government to launch the Chinese Excellence Program in September last year. Its goal is to make at least 5, 000 British state middle school students speak Chinese well by 2020.

The language has become the second most spoken foreign language in the US, after only Spanish (西班牙語), with over2. 1 million speakers, according to a survey.

Many US famous people such as Facebook founder(臉書創(chuàng)始人) Mark Zuckerberg and Obama's daughter, Malia Obama, study Chinese as a second language.

So far, 67 countries and regions (地區(qū))have included Chinese in their national course, so why are so many countries crazy about learning Chinese?

One reason could be that as China continues to develop quickly, Chinese is increasingly becoming a useful tool for people's personal and professional growth. “I think everyone believes that China will be the next great superpower(超級大國)... even if it' s not a superpower like America. It still has an important influence in the future,” said Aisling McCaffrey from Canada, who studied at the Renmin University of China, “Learning Chinese is the best way to make sure that you can be part of that growth.”

This opinion was shared by former(前任的) British Prime Minister David Cameron, who urged(呼吁) British students to learn Chinese to “seal(抓住)tomorrows business deals” in 2013.

1.Why do UK parents want their children to learn Chinese?

A.Chinese is on the course.

B.Princess George starts to learn Chinese.

C.The UK government sets up the program.

D.Chinese is one of the most useful languages.

2.What does the underlined word “l(fā)aunch” mean in Chinese?

A.成立 B.制造 C.設置 D.興建

3._______ asked British students to learn Chinese.

A.Malia Obama B.David Cameron C.Prince George D.Mark Zuckerberg

4.Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?

A.Aisling McCaffery is from Canada.

B.Learning Chinese is the best way to be famous.

C.There are more than 2.1 million Chinese speakers in the US.

D.67 countries and regions have included Chinese in their national course.

5.What's the best title of the passage?

A.The ways to learn Chinese well

B.The increasing number in learning Chinese

C.Why learning Chinese has risen around the world

D.The relationship between language and development

The coldest months of winter have arrived. But Woodchurch High School in the UK has had a winter coat rule. It has banned (禁止)students from wearing expensive coats after Christmas.

This is to stop “poverty-shaming(貧困羞辱)” among its students. Coat brands like Canada Goose and Moncler sell for £1,000(8, 674yuan), a cost that only the richest families are able to afford. Poor students feel left out when they see others wear these coats.

“These coats cause a lot of unfairness,” head teacher Rebekah Phillips told CNN. “They stigmatize(使……感到羞愧) students and parents who are less rich.”

Most parents are happy with the rule, saying that school shouldn't be a place where students’ economic(經濟上的) background distracts(使分心) them from learning. Small changes like this have led low-income(低收入的) students to become busier in school.

But some people don't agree with it. They ask why children shouldn't be allowed to wear clothes that keep them warm in winter. “Each child should be allowed to choose what he or she wants to wear,” Jillian Roberts, a teacher at the University of Victoria in Canada said.

But Woodchurch isn’t the first school to take such steps. In May, a UK primary school didn’t allow to bring expensive pencil cases. The US state of New Mexico even passed a law saying that it is against the law to separate or humiliate (羞辱)a child who can't pay for his or her lunch at school.

In the past, working people in Britain only had holidays on “holy” (religious) days: Sundays, Christmas and Easter. Now most people have about four weeks of holiday time every year plus public (公共的) holidays (also called “bank holidays”).

When?

Most British workers take a two-week holiday in July or August. School children are on holiday from the end of July to the start of September. Taking a second holiday break in winter or spring is also becoming more popular in the UK.

Where?

The most popular holiday destinations for Brits include Spain, France, Greece and the US. Lots of people buy a package holiday that includes flights and a hotel or an apartment (公寓). Cheap overseas flights mean that many British people are able to spend two weeks a year vacationing abroad. Flights and package holidays are much cheaper during school terms and the British government is worried that some young people are skipping school (逃課) to go on holiday. Parents who take their child on vacation during term time must now pay a fine (罰款).

British people also like to go on holiday in the UK. They might go to England, Northern Ireland, Scotland or Wales, In Cornwall (康沃爾), for example, there is an environmental project called the Eden Project. You can see plants from all over the world there.

Independent (獨立的) holidays

Some teenagers want to spend their holidays doing something without their family. A language exchange (交換) is one way to become more independent and improve one’s language skills.
