How to ride a bicycle in traffic
Cycling in traffic is something that seems dangerous but can be quite safe as long as you obey the rules of the road and exercise alertness (機(jī)敏)and common sense. Here are some tips for you.
【1】A helmet(頭盔) won’t prevent accidents. But it can save you from serious head injuries if you are in an accident. That’s why it’s always safer to wear it when cycling.
【2】 So always have lights if it is not very bright out, and if you cycle in the evening, reflective clothing is a great idea. The more obvious you are to drivers, the less likely they are to hit you.
【3】Start from the easy streets. Pick some quiet back streets and get used to being around cars and other road traffic Gradually build up your stamina(耐力) on larger roads by practicing on them on quiet days.
【4】 Always ride with the traffic. Stay off sidewalks, stop for red lights, stop at stop signs, and obey all other traffic signs. Don’t run red lights no matter how many other cyclists do it. Your good habits can help improve others’ safety awareness.
【5】 If you need to talk on your cellphone, stop and pull over. Don’t listen to an MP3 player or radio. Some cars are very difficult to hear, so you need to pay careful attention to not get run over by them.
A. The wearing of helmets is a requirement in many countries.
B. If you’re an inexperienced cyclist, it is not a good idea to throw yourself in the heavy traffic.
C. Make sure you are comfortable with your bike.
D. You should always pay attention to the rules of the road.
E. Most accidents happen when drivers haven’t noticed a cyclist.
F. Avoid doing things that will affect your ability to hear cars coming up behind you

【題目】 Agatha Christie is possibly the world’s most famous detective(偵探的) story writer. She wrote about 80 novels, and her sales (4 billion copies of her novels) was over those of William Shakespeare. However, behind her works was a shy woman whose life was often lonely and unhappy.
She was born in 1890 in Devon, the third child of Clarissa and Frederick Miller, and grew into a beautiful and sensitive(敏感的) girl. She didn’t go to school but was educated by her parents. Her father taught her maths through stories and games, and her mother encouraged her to write by her own stories. Unfortunately her father died in 1901 when she was 11, and both she and her mother were very sad.
When World War I came in 1914, she became a nurse in a hospital, which was very useful to her later work. Many of the murders(殺人犯) in her books were carried out by a clever use of medicine, showing how much she had learnt about them as a nurse.
She wrote her first detective novel, The Mysterious Affair at Styles, in 1916. And it was published in 1920. In this novel she introduced Hercule Poirot, the Belgian detective who appeared in many later novels. Her other main detective was Miss Marple, who was from Agatha’s grandmother and her circle of friends. Christie’s stories keep the reader guessing who the murderer is until the very end of the story.
In 1914, at the beginning of the war, she married Archibald Christie, but the marriage was unhappy. It didn’t last and they left each other in 1926. It was a very difficult time for her, as her much-loved mother had died earlier that year. Agatha suffered a lot and one night she drove her car and disappeared.
She went missing for eleven days and was finally found in a hotel in Harrogate, in the North of England. Agatha only wanted staying alone but the newspapers had given her a hard time over her driving the car and disappearing. She decided never to let them enter her private life again
She enjoyed a very happy second marriage to Max Mallowan who she met in Baghdad and married in 1930. Her detective skills were a help to him in his work in Syria and Iraq. By successfully staying out of the newspapers, she found happiness with her husband. Her best novels were written after 1930, and she continued writing until 1973. She died peacefully in 1976.

【題目】 It’s common for a child to lose his or her baby tooth during the growth. What do children do when they lose baby teeth? People around the world do it differently.
A custom in the US, England, Canada, Australia and some other English-speaking countries is that children put their baby tooth under their pillow (枕頭) before going to bed. They believe the tooth fairy(牙仙子) comes during the night and leave a coin in exchange for their tooth. Of course, we know that the money is not from the tooth fairy. Their parents do it instead.
In some European countries it is a common practice to bury the baby tooth in the earth. The tooth might be buried in the garden or in the surrounding field. However, since most of the people now find themselves living in towns or cities, they begin placing the teeth in small flowerpots. It’s done so that the permanent(永久的) tooth will grow in its place.
Putting a tooth under a pillow sounds sweet, and putting a tooth under the ground or in a flowerpot sounds safe, but what about throwing those teeth around? In some Asian countries, that’s just what people do. Children throw a lower tooth up onto the roof and an upper one is thrown down on the ground, or hidden under the bed. It is done so that the new upper tooth grows downwards, while the new lower tooth upwards.
Some countries even have more interesting traditions. In Nigeria, if you’re a boy, you hold your tooth and eight stones in your fist(拳頭). Girls hold six stones and their tooth in their fist. The children then close their eyes and state their names. They then say, “Oh, I want my tooth back!” Next, they throw everything in their fist up in the air and run away as fast as they can. In Mongolia, the baby tooth is given to a young dog. There, the dog is respected and considered to be able to protect people. If the dog likes the baby tooth and eats it, it’s said that a strong tooth will grow again
【1】How many different traditions about the baby tooth are mentioned in the passage?
A. Four.B. Five.C. Six.D. Seven.
【2】Why do people in Asia throw their baby teeth around in different ways?
A. Because it means nothing but it is only a tradition.
B. Because they think that the teeth are useless to them.
C. Because they have no other places to store these teeth.
D. Because they expect their new teeth to grow in a correct way
【3】Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?
A. A kid in UK hides his baby tooth under a pillow to get some money.
B. People in Europe usually bury their baby teeth in different places.
C. In Nigeria, boys and girls like games with their baby teeth
D. In Mongolia, people think dogs can help them to have strong teeth to grow.
【4】What does the passage mainly want to tell us?
A. There are different traditions to do with the baby tooth in the world
B. The baby tooth means something different to people in different countries.
C. When children lose baby teeth, they like to do some different things with them.
D. Most children in the world hope to have stronger teeth when they lose baby teeth.
