Mr．Whitcomb Judson was a really clever man．He invented a special train that was pushed along by air and in 1893 he invented something like a zip(拉鏈)that could be used to open and close clothes．It could be used on men’s trousers and on ladies’ dresses．He did not call his invention a ‘zip’ but everybody says that he was the ‘Father of the Zip’．Mr．Judson tried to sell his invention but no one wanted it because it did not work very well．A Canadian changed Mr．Judson’s invention and made it better．He made a zip that worked very well in 1913．This is the same zip we use today．

　　14-year-old Jason Morgan talks about an exciting science project．

　　Last month I got the chance to take part in an underwater research project in an area of the Gulf of Mexico called the Flower Gardens．A team of professional researchers ’ led by the scientist Dr Matt Phillips, was trying to learn more about the fish and different creatures that live in this part of the sea．The Flower Gardens are a long way from the shore(海岸)and we spent three days on a boat．

　　The team used a piece of underwater equipment called ROV to collect information．The ROV was great fun．It was controlled by a computer on the boat, and I was allowed to operate it a few times．

　　However, the thing I enjoyed most was diving(潛水)into the water．At first, I was quite scared－mainly because I couldn’ t see land in any direction．But as soon as I jumped into the water, I wasn't afraid anymore．It was amazing to see the colorful fish swimming around and I could see all the ways to the Flower Gardens, which are almost 30 metres down．

　　I will never forget the Flower Gardens．The trip was like a holiday but I also learnt new things about science and research projects．It was a great opportunity and it has made me think about my goals(目標(biāo))in life．The experience will help me work harder to become a scientist．

　　Giving someone good news is easy, but what about bad news? Are there any good ways to give bad news without making people too upset? The following steps might help：

　　Say something positive．Try to start or end the conversation with some good news, so that it’s not all bad．For example,“You did very well in the interview, but unfortunately we've given the job to somebody else．”

　　Prepare your listener for the news．Use phrases to introduce what you’re going to say, like “Unfortunately,…”，“I’m really sorry, but…” or “I'm afraid I’ve got some bad news．” This gives the listener time to prepare for what you' re going to say．

　　Try to give a reason．People like to know why things go wrong．Try to explain the decision．If someone doesn’ t get the job, can you explain why? If you have to cancel an appointment, try to give a reason．

　　Use a soft tone of voice．If you’re giving someone bad news, try to use a soft, calm voice to make your sound kind．Say things to show you understand, like “I'm really sorry．” or “I know this must be disappointing．”

　　Last Monday I stood at the bus stop for fifteen minutes, waiting for a bus．By the time I saw one come around the corner, there was not enough time left to make the trip－so I had to go back to the office．The same thing happened on Wednesday．On Thursday my luck changed, I got on a bus right away and arrived at the cinema in twenty minutes．But when I got there, I found a long line of people at the box office．I heard one man say he had been waiting in line for fifty-five minutes．I found that I would not have enough time to wait in line, I caught the next bus and went back across the town．

　　By Friday I understood my only hope was to make the trip by car．it was not cheap,but I felt it would be worth ot to see the film．The trip by car only took 10 minutes, but it felt like one hour to me．When I reached the cinema, I was delighted to see that nobody was waiting in line．But quickly found out that it was because they had already sold all the tickets．

　　Earthquakes happen without warning(前兆)．They can happen any time of a day, at any point during the year．But don’t worry because most are so weak that they cannot be felt．Only a few big ones hurt people．However, it’s important to know what to do when an earthquake is happening．

　　Do NOT go outside．You could get injured from falling glass or parts of buildings．If you are outside, stay away from buildings and power lines(輸電線)．

　　Stay under a desk, table, or other strong furniture．Hold on to it．Or stay in a corner of the building．Cover your face and head with your arms and cover your mouth with a towel or clothing．Stay inside until shaking stops and it is safe to go outside．

　　Keep away from windows, pictures or advertisements on the wall or the building, and anything else that could fall and hurt you．Most people get injured by falling things during an earthquake, not by the shaking itself．

　　If you are driving when an earthquake happens, stop the car if it’s safe．Stay inside your car until the earthquake stops, and don’t drive near bridges．Try not to stop by power lines or trees．These could fall and hurt you．

　　In Chicago, a computerized system has been developed that controls(管理)traffic on the city’s 235 miles of seven expressways．Now one－a controller－can follow the movement of Chicago’s traffic by looking at a set of lights．The system uses electric sensors(感應(yīng)器)that are built into each expressway, every half a mile．Several times a second, the computer receives information from each sensor and translates it into green, yellow or red lights on a map in the control room．A green light means traffic is moving forty-five miles an hour, yellow means thirty to forty-five miles an hour, and red means heavy traffic－cars standing still or moving less than thirty miles an hour．

　　“See that red light near Austin Avenue?”the controller asked a visitor．“That’s a repair truck fixing the road, and the traffic has to go around it．”At the Roosevelt Road entrance to the expressway, the light kept changing from green to red and back to green again．“A lot of trucks get on the expressway there,”the controller explained．“They can’t speed up as fast as cars．”The sensors show immediately where an accident or a stopped car is blocking the traffic, and a truck is sent by radio to clear the road．The system has lowered the number of accidents by 18 percent．There are now 1．4 deaths on Chicago’s expressway for each one hundred million miles traveled, while in other parts of the county there are 2.6．

　　Traffic experts say that the Chicago system is the “coming thing”．Systems like Chicago’s are already in use on some expressways in Los Angeles and Houston．“Chicago has taken the lead,”said New York City’s traffic director and he added,“Chicago’s a good example．”

　　He found an old master craftsman who was willing to teach him the necessary skills．First, Gordon takes an old bottle．Then he puts in a layer of putty(一層油灰),carefully shaped and painted it look like the sea．Next he builds the ship．To get the ship through the neck of the bottle, Gordon holds down the masts(桅桿)．Once the ship is inside the bottle, he takes a long, thin tool to raise the masts．

　　Gordon has completed well over one hundred models．His wish is to build bigger model ships, such as aircraft carriers．This will be more challenging, as he will have to build the ship actually inside the bottle．His hobby certainly needs time, patience and a steady hand．
