　　In many countries around the world May 1 is a holiday．Labour Day, or Workers' Day, is an international holiday that honours working men and women, and the jobs they do．

　　During the late 1880s, in many parts of the world, people worked for fourteen to sixteen hours a day in factories, and earned very little money．In the United States and Canada, working people got together to try to make their workplaces better．These groups of people formed unions(團(tuán)體)．The union leaders asked company directors for shorter work days and higher salaries(工資), but many of them refused to accept their ideas．

　　On May 1, 1886, men and women in the United States and Canada stopped work and marched through cities and towns to try and force bosses to let them work an eight-hour day．In the city of Chicago, several people died in fights with the police．Over the next few years, people in cities around the world stopped working every May 1 to honour workers everywhere．By the early twentieth century, the first of May was a national holiday in many countries．

　　In the United States and Canada, May 1 is not a holiday．North Americans celebrate Labour Day on the first Monday in September．Today in the Unites States, Labour Day is mostly about having fun．People enjoy a long weekend, and often celebrate by having barbecues or picnics with friends or family．In many parts of the Unites States, Labour Day is also the last day of summer vacation, and the students return to school the next day．

　　Last July, my 12-year-old car died on California's Santa Freeway．It was an hour before sunset, and I was 25 miles from home．I couldn't reach anyone to pick me up, so I decided to take a bus．Not knowing the routes, I thought I'd just go east．

　　A bus stopped．I got on and asked the driver how far she was going．“Ten more miles,” she said．There was another bus I could take from here．This clearly was going to be a long night．

　　I got off at the end of the route and she told me which bus to look for．After waiting 30 minutes, I began to think about a very expensive taxi ride home．Then a bus came up．There was no light number above its windshield．It was out of service, but the door opened．It was the same driver．

　　“I just can't leave you here,” she said．“This isn't the nicest place．I will give you a ride home．”

　　“You will drive me home on the bus?” I asked, astonished．

　　“No, I will take you in my car,” she said．

　　“It's a long way,” I insisted．

　　“Come on,” she said．“I have nothing else to do．”

　　As we drove from the station in the car, she began telling me a story．A few days earlier, her brother had run out of gas．A good man picked him up, took him to a service station and then back to his car．“I'm just passing the favour(善意的行為)along,”she said．

　　When I offered her money as a thank-you, she wouldn't accept．“Just do something nice for somebody．Pass it along,” she said．

　　A Nobel Prize is considered by most people one of the highest international honours a person can receive．As you know，the prizes were started by a Swedish called Alfred Nobel．He was born in Stockholm，the capital of Sweden．Alfred Nobel was a great scientist．He made two important inventions，and so he became very rich．Although he was rich，Nobel was not a happy man．He never married or had children．Also，he was a sick man during his large part of life．When he died at the age of 63, he left a fund of＄9,000,000．The money was to be used in giving prizes to those who made great achievements in physics，chemistry(化學(xué))，medicine and literature, and for world peace．

　　The first Nobel Prizes were given on December 10, 1901，five years after Nobel's death．Since then many famous people from all over the world have been given Nobel Prizes for their achievements．

　　Each prize has three parts．The first part is a gold medal．Second，a winner of a Nobel Prize is given a diploma, saying that he has been given the prize．The third part of the prize is a large amount of money－about＄40,000．

　　Often a prize is given to just one person，but not always．Sometimes a prize is shared．It may be given to two or more people who have worked together．It is also sometimes true that a prize is not given at all if there is no great achievement．In 1972，for example，no Nobel Peace Prize was given．

　　In Britain you're allowed to drive a car when you're seventeen．You have to get a special two-year driving license before you can start．When you're leaning, someone with a full license always has to be in the car with you because you aren't allowed to drive the car on the road alone．You don't have to go to a driving school－a friend can teach you．The person with you isn't allowed to take money for the lesson unless he's got a teacher's license．

　　Before you're allowed to have a full license, you have to take a driving test．You can take a test in your own car, but it has to be fit for the road．In the test you have to drive round for about half an hour and then answer a few questions．If you don't pass the test, you're allowed to take it again a few weeks later if you want to．In 1970 a woman passed her fortieth test after 212 driving lessons! When you've passed your test, you don't have to take it again, and you're allowed to go on driving as long as you like．Britain's oldest driver was a man who drove in 1974 at the age of 100．

　　Before 1904 everyone was allowed to drive, even children．Then from 1904 car drivers had to have a license．But they didn't have to take a test until 1935．On the early days of car driving, before 1878, cars weren't allowed to go faster than four miles an hour, and someone had to lead the car with a red flag．

　　The dewdrop reached the edge of the leaf．It was sure that this was the end．The day had only just begun and the end had come so quickly．It seemed so unfair．It seemed so meaningless．It tried hard to do whatever it could to stay on the leaf, but it was no use．

　　Finally, it fell．Below there was a mirror．A reflection(反射)of the dewdrop seemed to be coming up to meet it．Closer and closer they came together until finally…the little dewdrop became a part of the great pond(池塘)．Now the dewdrop was no more, but it was not destroyed．

　　It had become one with the whole．
