SHANGHAI-Famed Chinese scientist Qian Weichang died here on Friday morning, saddening millions of his countrymen.
He was 98.
Qian, a pioneer in mechanics and applied mathematics in modern China, was one of the three famous "Qians" in China's science and technology field. He was well known alongside Qian Xuesen, the father of China's space program, and Qian Sanqiang, a nuclear physicist who oversaw the development of China's nuclear program.
Wu Shuqing, former president of Peking University, said Qian was an internationally well-known scholar whose modesty and conduct has set a good example for following generations.
After learning about Qian's death, millions of Chinese people offered their condolences (吊唁) online.
Many students from Shanghai University, where Qian was a former president, burst into tears after hearing the news, saying it was a great loss to the university and to China.
For those off campus for the summer vocation, many visited their university website, which had been turned gray. Some said they planned to return to the campus to mourn him.
Many of those still on campus voluntarily joined preparations for a mourning (哀悼) service that will begin at the university on Saturday.
The university has set up two mourning halls at two of its campuses and publicized the mourning time and phone numbers at the two sites.
Qian was born in Wuxi, Jiangsu, in 1912. Although he was initially not good at science, he chose to study physics at Tsinghua University because he believed science and technology were the keys to strengthening China in the 1930s.
He graduated from Tsinghua in 1935, and earned his PhD in applied mathematics from the University of Toronto in Canada in 1942.
He returned to China in 1946 and became a mechanics professor and later vice-president at Tsinghua University.
Qian made great contributions to the engineering applications of sciences, such as the fluttering of airplanes, armor penetration, the design of instruments and pipe systems.
He is an academician (院士) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

OSLO — Excited with pride, Norwegians sang in the streets of Oslo on Sunday, celebrating Norway’s National Day and the country’s Eurovision Song Contest victory.
Hundreds of Norwegians sang along to Alexander Rybak’s winning song Fairytale as they walked in the country’s traditional National Day parade (游行) celebrating the Norwegian constitution.
Alexander Rybak — called “Alexander the Great” by the Norwegian media — won a great victory in the Eurovision Song Contest (ESC) by gaining the most votes in its 53-year history in Moscow on Saturday.
Alexander has played violin and piano since he was five years old, and he also composes his own music and sings. In 2006 he won the Norwegian talent show Kjempesjansen with his own song Foolin. Alexander has performed with one of the world’s most celebrated violinists, Pinchas Zukerman, won the Anders Jahres Culture Price and has been the concertmaster for Norway’s largest symphony orchestra (交響樂(lè)隊(duì)) for youths, Ung Symfoni.

Rybak is expected to draw a large crowd of fans to Oslo’s Gardermoen airport when he arrives next Sunday, after having invited all his countrymen from the stage in Moscow.
With Rybak’s win, Norway will host next year’s Eurovision finals, a show that reaches a television audience of over 100 million people. Norway’s Minister of Culture, Trond Giske, promised that Norway would put on a splendid show next year but without spending as much as Moscow, which spent 24 million euros this year. “I don’t think that is necessary,” he told national broadcaster NRK.

ASK LASKAS
YOU’VE GOT QUESTIONS. SHE'S GOT ANSWERS
My children go to a primary school where they are not allowed to play football in the playground for fear that a child might be hurt. Besides, now the school says there must be no homework because the local secondary school can't keep up with the amount of homework given in the primary school. Can the school do this?   Puzzled Dad
It can't if enough parents do something about it. It is not just schools. We live in a society which wishes to get rid of risk. However, schools should have a little common sense and courage. I have a beautiful teenage daughter who spends an hour making up her face in front of the mirror every day. I tell her to go easy. She just gets mad or bursts into tears. How can I make her understand she's beautiful the way she is.      Plain Mom
You can't. Your daughter is at the age when she's trying to look beautiful, trying on new masks. And if her friends all dress up as she does, you're in for an extra hard time. Support her and tell her she's beautiful — even if she looks ridiculous for now. Then invite her to join you for a day at a spa. Let her try various looks until she's comfortable in her own skin.

China news, Beijing, Feb. 9 – Housing price in China has always aroused heated discussions among property developers(房產(chǎn)開(kāi)發(fā)商)and ordinary Chinese. To many property developers and local government officials, housing price in China is still low compared with many developed countries. However, the average housing price in the United States is only 8,000 yuan per square meter, while in China, it is even higher than in the United States. This shows that there are some bubbles(泡沫) in Chinese real estate market, the International Finance News reported.
Although the average price of residential houses in the United States, after converted(轉(zhuǎn)換)to Renminbi, is about 8,000 yuan per square meter, the houses in US are not sold in terms of building area, as most Chinese property developers do when they sell their houses. If US property developers sell their houses according to the building area, then the housing price will be even lower than 8,000 yuan per square meter. In most big Chinese cities, such as Beijing, Shanghai, and Shenzhen, houses are sold a t a price even higher than those in the US.
The high housing sales price in large cities in China proves that Chinese real estate(房地產(chǎn))market does have some bubbles. Moreover, Chinese houses can not be compared with houses in US in terms of building quality, environment and supporting facilities. Furthermore, it should be noted that American people’s average income is several dozen times higher than that of Chinese people. How can the Chinese afford to buy a house which is even more expensive than that sold in US?
At the beginning of 2007, Chinese government issued a set of policies that aimed to benefit the public. Now in order to reduce the high housing prices, the government can regulate (控制) the real estate market by raising tax on property industry and controlling the release of loans(貸款)and lands to property developers. At the same time, the government should allow people to build more houses through various fund-raising channels, such as funds collected from buyers or raised by working units. By applying these multiple means, it is expected that the high housing prices can be lowered.
小題1:What is the average housing price per square meter in China?
A.8000 yuan.B.10000 yuan.C.7000 yuan.D.it’s not mentioned here.
小題2:Which of the following does NOT support the idea that the average housing price in China is  even higher than in the United States?

B.American people’s average income is several dozen times higher than that of Chinese
people.
C.The houses in US are not sold in terms of building area, as most Chinese property
developers do when they sell their houses.
D.There population who need houses in China than in the United States.
小題3:How many measures are mentioned in the last paragraph in order to reduce the high housing  prices?
A.Four. B.Three. C.Tow. D.One.
小題4:What is the main idea of this passage?
A.The housing price in China is so high that the government should do something useful to
prevent it.
B.There are some bubbles in Chinese real estate market.

A Train Floating On Air
A train that floats on air? It's not magic―it's magnets (磁).And it's close to reality.
In Virginia USA the fall of 2002, a train with no wheels traveled on air and carried college students across their campus. In Japan, a whisper-quiet railway engine hovered and raced at 350 miles per hour using magnets and electricity as the power. And in China, a magnet train line linked Shanghai with nearby Pudong Airport.
These trains use magnetic levitation (懸浮) technology, “maglev” for short. They use the same rules as the magnets you pick up at home or school: opposite poles of magnets attract each other, and like poles repel each other.
How does it work?
Powerful magnets on the bottom of the train repel magnets on the track, which is actually just a magnet-filled guiding way. With a magnetic field of sufficient force, the train will go hovering on air, which seemed impossible to us in the past.
When an electrical current is sent through the track, the train moves. Turn the current backwards and the train slows down.
Maglev doesn't rely on the friction (摩擦力) of wheels on track, so it can climb a much steeper hill than a traditional train. And it can travel easily in snow and ice, something that could bring normal trains to a screaming stop.
小題1:This passage is about __________.
A.maglevB.magnetsC.levitationD.electricity
小題2: Which of the following is a repelling action?

A.B.C.D.
小題3:What can we learn from the text?
A.A magnet-filled guiding way is formed inside a maglev train.
B.Instead of electricity, magnets are used as the power of a maglev.
C.Maglev trains can climb hills with the help of magnetwheels.
D.Electric currents decide the movements of a maglev train.
小題4: What is the difference between a maglev train and an ordinary train?
A.A maglev train can climb mountains without power while an ordinary one can’t.
B.A maglev train can travel in college campus while an ordinary train is not allowed.
C.Travelling without a track, a maglev train is safer and smoother than an ordinary one.
D.Floating on a track, a maglev train is faster, quieter than an ordinary railway train.

Beijing — Premier Wen Jiabao has urged the leadership of all countries to deepen their political will in dealing with climate change woes (災(zāi)難) as uncertainties mount (增長(zhǎng)) in the months before the United Nation’s conference in Cancun, Mexico, at the end of this year.
Wen made the remarks on Friday when he met with nearly 20 politicians, climate change and environmental ministers worldwide, who are in Beijing this weekend to attend an international forum on green economy and climate change.
Based on the achievements made at the Copenhagen Summit last December, Wen urged the rich countries to further make clear their compulsory carbon reduction targets. “At the same time, we developing countries should make clear our voluntary goal of slowing down climate change,” Wen said.
Wen also urged the developed countries to transfer(轉(zhuǎn)讓?zhuān)ヽlimate change friendly technologies to the developing countries, especially the poorest countries and island nations.
During the meeting, Wen said China will redouble its efforts in reducing carbon emissions and improving energy efficiency during the coming years after it finishes its 2006-2010 goal of cutting energy consumption per unit of economic output by 20 percent.
While praising China for its green efforts, former Australian Prime Minister Robert J. Lee Hawke asked China to share its experiences and lessons on energy savings and pollution reduction to the rest of the world to deal with global environmental woes and climate change.
Wen responded: “China, together with the rest of the world, is willing to make its due contribution in coping with global warming and climate change.”
At a banquet for the foreign guests on Friday night, former vice-premier Zeng Peiyan said “Increasing uncertainties are ahead for the climate change negotiations. The world needs more dialogue and cooperation”.
“Climate change woes are our shared challenges but the root lies in the historical emissions by the developed countries,” said Zeng, as president of the China Center for International Economic Exchanges, which organized the weekend climate change summit.

The results of the US/NATO bombing Yugoslavia are to be judged by history. I shall not be the one to do this. But being in the center of actual events that are creating that history, I cannot stay away from what is going on in my country.
First of all, the main aim of the bombing was to prevent a human suffering in Kosovo. Today, after many days of frequent bombing, that aim is more distant than before. The bombing only brought tens of thousands of people running away from their homes, not to mention the large number of the death and injury, buildings and factories. Suppose that the US/NATO really had a wish to prevent the human suffering, they should realize by now how wrong they were when they thought the bombing would solve the problem.
So, what’s left? Back off or ground troops? But who is going to join the ground troops? It would take at least 200,000 armed soldiers, not the 20,000 that the US/NATO have prepared in Macedonia. It should also be clear that the Serbs(塞族人) will not give up on Kosovo.
I live under continuous bombing for more than a week now, and it doesn’t frighten me anymore. I don’t turn to the shelter at the sound of warning. It’s the thought of ground troops that frightens me. Vietnam would seem like a picnic compared to a bloodshed(流血事件) in Kosovo if the ground troops appear. Is that what the US/NATO wants?
72. Which of the following statements is true?
  A. The US/NATO really intends to stop the human suffering.
  B. The result of the war will be judged by people in Kosovo.
  C. The bombing made tens of thousands of people homeless.
  D. The continuous bombing will make the Serbs give up on Kosovo.
73. The writer is _____.
  A. an American reporter      B. a Chinese reporter
  C. a Macedonian D. a Yugoslavian
74. What worries the writer most?
  A. The continuous bombing. B. The coming of the ground troops.
  C. The sound of bomb warning. D. The idea of ground troops.
75. What is the writer’s attitude towards the bombing in Kosovo?
  A. It is the US/NATO’s duty to defend Kosovo.
  B. It is wrong to solve the problem by bombing Kosovo.
  C. The aim of bombing Kosovo is to stop a human suffering.
  D. The bombing can solve the problem of Kosovo.
