Tom was one of the brightest boys in the year, with supportive parents. But when he was 15 he
suddenly stopped trying. He left school at 16 with only two scores for secondary school subjects. One
of the reasons that made it cool for him not to care was the power of his peer(同齡人) group.
The lack of right male(男性的 )  role models  in  many of their lives-at home and particularly in the
school environment(環(huán)境) --means  that  their  peers  are  the  only
people they have to judge themselves against.
They don't see men succeeding in society so it doesn't occur to  them that chey could make something of themselves. Without male teachers as a role model, the effect of peer actions and street culture (文化)
is all-powerful. Boys want to be part of a club. However, schools can provide the environment for change, and provide the right role models for them. Teachers need to be trained to stop thal but not in front of a
child's peers. You have to do it one to one, because that is when you see the real child.
It's pointless sending a child home if he or she has done. wrong. They see it as a welcome day off to
watch television or play computer games. Instead, schools should have special unil where a child who has done wrong goes for the day and gets advice about his problems-somewhere he can work away from his peers and go home after the other children.
1. Why did Tom give up studying?
A. He disliked his teachers.
B. His parents no longer supported him.
C. lt's cool for boys of his age not to care about studies.

in the past. New medicines and machines are being developed every day to extend life. However, some
people, including some doctors, are not in favor of these life extending measures, and they argue that
people should have the right to die when they want. They say that the quality of life is as important as life
itself and that people should not be forced to go on living when conditions of life have become unbearable. They saw that people should be allowed to die with dignity (尊嚴(yán)) and to decide when they want to die.
Others argue that life under any conditions is better than death and that the duty of doctors is always to
extend life as long as possible. And so the battle goes on and on without a definite answer.

It seems that beauty and women are twins. You are joking? No, I do not. Observe for yourself Ads on
fashion TV screens, radio programs, magazines, newspapers, and the streets. Whether they have realized it
or not, women are surrounded (包圍) by a sea of fashion. They are taught to think that without beautiful
clothes they will grow old and lose their charm. So who dares to neglect dressing up at the cost of their
appearance and youth?
But I do not agree with the opinion that women have to show their beauty through their looks. The
richness of their minds proves to be more beautiful and attractive than their looks. A woman who has
experienced many troubles and may be called"aunt" or "granny" can still keep up her beauty if she has such
excellent qualities as knowledge, ability, a kind heart, great courage, concern for others, etc.
In addition, old and young, beautiful and ugly are relative concept. People who keep a young mind will
never feel old. Interested in new things and eager to learn more, they keep up with the tide. Plainly (簡樸地)
dressed women may have a type of beauty that is pure and real. Reading and learning is the best way to keep
one youthful. Good books ale rich soil which can feed the flower of one's heart and looks.

Among the dead in South Asia's tsunami were many tourists at Sri Lanka's national wildlife park at
Yala. But very few of the park's animals - elephants, buffaloes, monkeys and wild cats -appear to have
died. There are theories that animals can sense natural disasters and flee to safety. First, it s possible that
the animals may have heard the quake before the tsunami hit. The underwater rupture likely produced
sound waves known as infrasound (次聲) or infrasonic sound. Humans can't hear infrasound, but many
animals including dogs, elephants, tigers and pigeons can. A second early warning sign the animals might
have sensed is ground vibration (振動). The massive quake would have produced vibrational waves
known as Rayleigh waves. These vibrations move through the ground like waves move on the surface
of the ocean but faster.   They travel at ten times the speed of sound. The Rayleigh waves would have
reached Sri Lanka hours before the water hit. Mammals, birds, insects and spiders can sense Rayleigh
waves. So the animals at Yala might have felt the Rayleigh waves and then run to higher ground. But
what about humans? While we can't hear infrasound, we can feel it, although we don't necessarily
know we're feeling it. We also experience Rayleigh waves by special sensors in our joints, which exist
just for that purpose. Sadly, it seems we don't pay attention to the information when we get it. Maybe
we screen it out because there's so much going on before our eyes and in our ears. Humans have a lot
of things on our minds and usually that works out OK.
1. Why did few animals at Yala die when the tsunamis that caused a huge number of human deaths hit?
A. Because the animals were staying at a higher place in the park.
B. Because the animals were able to run much faster than human beings.
C. Because human beings cannot hear the infrasonic sound.
D. Because the animals might have picked up the danger signals and ran away.
2. Which of the statements about "Ravleigh waves" is true?
A. Rayleigh waves are massive vibrational waves that usually cause quakes or tsunamis.
B. Rayleigh waves move on the ocean surface at a speed ten times that of sound waves.
C. Rayleigh waves can be felt both by animals and human beings.
D. Rayleigh waves, just like infrasonic sound, can only be felt by animals.
3. When a tsunami hits, it is possible that ______.
A. we can't feel the infrasound so we can't be informed of the danger
B. we can feel Rayleigh waves as well as infrasound so we are able to escape the danger like animals
C. we were so busy with things on our minds that we feel neither infrasound nor Rayleigh waves
D. we think nothing of the information of its coming even though we can also get it
4. What does the underlined word "that" in the last sentence refer to?
A. Screening out the information.
B. There being so much going on before our eyes and in our ears.
C. Having a lot of things on our minds.
D. Paying attention to the information.

Computers are popular with the people all over world, which give people new
choices about how to spend their time.
Some may use this freedom to share less time with certain friends or family members,
but new technology will also let them stay in closer touch with those they care most
about. I know this from personal experience.
E-mall makes it easy to work at home, which is where I now spend most weekends
and evenings. My working hours aren't necessarily much shorter than they once were,
but I spend fewer of them at the office. This lets me share more time with my young
daughter than I might have if she' d been born before electronic marl became such a
practical tool.
The Internet also makes it easy to share thoughts with a group of friends. Say you
do something fun -- see a great movie perhaps and there are four or five friends who
might want to hear about it. If you call each one, you may be tired of telling the story.
With E-mail, you just write one note about your experience at your convenience
and address it to all the friends you think might be interested. They can read your
message when they have time, and read only as much as they want to. They can reply
jt their convenience and you can read what they have to say at your convenience.
E-mail is also an inexpensive way to stay in close touch with people who live far
away. More than a few parents use E-mail to keep in touch, even daily touch, with
their children off at college.
We just have to keep in mind that computers and the Internet offer another way of
staying in touch. They don't take the place of any of the old ways.

Free and secure accommodation, no bills and even the odd home-cooked meals. It sounds like the
perfect living arrangement for cash-strapped students.
Two mothers believe they have devised a way for struggling students to save on accommodation
costs when they leave home to study at university.
Kate Barnham and Amanda Flude have launched Student Swaps,an online accommodation forum
(論壇) for parents and students,in advance of the introduction in September of ~3,000 higher education
top-up fees.
Their website says,"The principle behind Student Swaps is to enable students to literally swap(交換)
family homes. "The website will hold a database of students who would like to swap and link them with
suitable matches. So those from one town/city could swap with those from a different town/city.
The site describes itself as offering a" cost-free accommodation alternative...at a time of growing
student debt". There is no charge for the service at the moment, but Ms Barnham and Ms Flude intend to
introduce a ~10 annual fee if it becomes established.
However, the National Union of Students ( NUS) has warned that, while the scheme may sound
appealing to struggling freshers,it lacks any formal regulation.
Veronica King,NUS vice-president of welfare, said, " The fact that this scheme has even been
suggested is evidence to the high levels of debt students now face on graduation. " Recent research has
shown that students are more likely to live at home in coming years,in a bid to cut down on the cost of
a degree.
"This is worrying,as it may mean that students choose their university on the basis of where it is,rather
than because it offers the best course for them. It also means students will miss out on what is for
some-a key part of the student experience-living away from home. "

A. lacks money
B. prefers to stay at home

B. To let students stay close to their universities.

3. What can students do on Student Swaps?
A. They can find students to exchange homes with.
B. They can make friends with students from a different city.
C. They can borrow money to pay for their higher education.
D. They can voice their opinions against the rising cost of a degree.
