As life expectancy increases nowadays, the average person lives well beyond the age of retirement. As a result, the elderly make up an ever-increasing percentage of society, which makes it more important than ever for a real effort to be made in improving the lives of senior citizens.

One way to deal with the situation would be to ensure that the elderly have enough money on which to live. Obviously, when a person stops working, they still require a source of income to cover their basic needs such as food, accommodation and heating. A clear solution to the problem is for the government to make sure that the state pension is adequate for these needs.

Steps should also be taken to overcome the health problems the elderly face. The government should also provide access to the best health care available, which may necessitate paying for residential homes where the elderly can have round-the-clock nursing, or, at the very least, providing medication free of charge to all people over a certain age.

The lives of old people could be improved if attempts were made to address the problem of social isolation. If we organised trips for the elderly to community centres, visits from social workers their problem of loneliness can be reduced a lot which marks the lives of so many old people living alone and far from their families.

One final suggestion, which would help enormously, is to change the attitude of the community towards its older members, who are all too often seen as a burden on society and dismissed as having little to do with modern life. We need to be taught from an early age to respect the views of old people, and appreciate their broader experience of life. This would help society as a whole, and encourage appreciation of the role that old people can still play today.

1.What can be inferred from Paragraph 3?

A. All the elderly can enjoy free medication.

B. The nurses can take good care of the elderly.

C. The elderly are in face of health problems.

2.The underlined word “address” in Paragraph 4 probably means_________.

3. What factors affected the old people’s life?

d. the experience of life

e. social isolation

f. medical care

A. a, b, c, d

B. b ,c ,d ,e

C. c ,d ,e, f

D. a, c, e, f

4. According to the last suggestion, the old people_________.

A. should be respected by all of us

Rachel Carson,a wellknown nature author in America, was happiest writing about the strength and stability of natural systems. Her books mainly described the inter connectedness of nature and all living things.

Completing Silent Spring took Carson four years.First published in The New Yorker in June 1962,the book alarmed readers across America. It described how DDT entered the food chain and accumulated (堆積) in the fatty tissues of animals, including human beings, and caused cancer and genetic damage.

Carson begins by describing exactly these effects in the first chapter, creating strong images and drawing the readers in.As the book continues, she gives various examples of how insecticides(殺蟲(chóng)劑) are not only unsuccessful, but actually very costly and damaging. She also explains about the biological controls which are less expensive and much more efficient.

A single application on a crop, she wrote, killed insects for weeks and months, and not only the targeted insects but countless more, and remained poisonous in the environment even after it was washed out by rainwater.Carson concluded that DDT and other pesticides had definitely harmed birds and animals and had destroyed the entire world's food supply. The book's most famous chapter,A Fable for Tomorrow, described a nameless American town where all life—from fish to birds to apple blossoms to human children—had been “silenced” by the harmful effects of DDT.

The most important effect of Silent Spring, though, was a new public awareness that nature was so easily destroyed by human intervention(干預(yù)).Rachel Carson had made a brave proposal:that,at times, technological progress is so basically at odds with(與……不一致) natural processes that it must be prevented.

1.What are Rachel Carson's books mainly concerned about?

A.The relationship between man and nature.

B.The balance of natural systems.

C.The interconnection of nature and living things.

D.The pollution of the environment.

2.According to the text,Silent Spring________.

A.didn't draw the readers' attention when first published

B.mainly describes people's quiet lives in an American town

C.effectively tells people how to keep the balance of nature

D.showed the harmful effects of DDT on nature

3.Rachel Carson thinks that the more efficient way to kill insects is to use ________.

A.DDT

B.human controls

C.biological controls

D.technical progress

4.The publication of Silent Spring makes people ________.

A.understand the author's outstanding writing talent

B.realize the importance of technical progress

C.a(chǎn)ware of the necessity of environmental protection

D.rethink the harmful effects of developing industry
