A drop in tourism during the coronavirus crisis is making it more difficult for some organizations to protect 1 (threaten) wildlife in Africa. Wildlife 2 (official) fear poaching (偷獵) activity will rise because the collapse of the travel industry leaves less money for guarding animals.

African rhinos have long been 3 threat from poachers who kill them for their horns. The illegal trade is fueled by the belief, in some cultures, 4 the horns have medicinal value which has not been proven by science.

The number of black rhinos in Africa 5 (increase) slowly. But a report in March by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) said it still considered the animals “critically endangered”. In part, it credits the comeback of the rhinos to effective law enforcement. 6, the enforcement measures are very

costly. The organization spends about $10,000 each year for every rhino to pay for the protection.

The IUCN expects to lose $3 to $ 4 million this year and the 7 (lose) severely limits the group’s ability 8 (protect) the rhinos. Wildlife activists across Africa are now waiting to see how poachers will react to the current situation, and whether more rare wildlife 9 (kill).

The IUCN said the population of black rhinos grew at a 10 (year) rate of 2.5 percent between 2012 and 2018. Now, there are more than 5,600 animals. That growth was predicted to continue over the next five years, the environmental group said.

故填under

4

the horns have medicinal value which has not been proven by science是在介紹說明belief的具體內容,與前面belief是同位語關系;從句句意齊全,應使用只起連接作用、無實意的that引導。故填that

5

故填is increasing/has been increasing/has increased。

6

故填 however。

7

此處是固定搭配:the ability to do sth.“有能力去做某事”。故填 to protect。

9

此處與how poachers will react to the current situation為并列關系,也應使用一般將來時;killwildlife之間是被動關系,應使用一般將來時的被動語態(tài)。故填 will be killed/is to be killed。

10

The spot of red was what first caught Randy Heiss’s attention on December 16, 2018. He was hiking the remote land behind his farm in a small town near the U.S.-Mexico border, and there lying on the grass was a balloon. He walked toward it with his dog, thinking he should pick it up and throw it away.

That’s when he noticed the balloon’s string was attached to a piece of paper. “Dayami,” it read on one side, in a child’s writing. Heiss flipped the paper over. On the back he saw a numbered list, all in Spanish. His Spanish wasn’t very good, but he could see it was a Christmas list!

Heiss was charmed. He suspected that a child had tried to send Santa Claus a Christmas wish list by balloon, something he used to do himself when he was a kid. Nobody had ever returned the letters Heiss had sent, but he wondered whether he could find the girl who had sent this one.

It would be difficult, but Heiss had a few clues. About 20 miles to the southwest, just across the border, was the city of Nogales, Mexico, with a population of about a quarter million. Based on the wind direction, he was almost sure that was where it came from. Heiss brought the note home to his wife, who is fluent in Spanish and helped him translate the list. They determined that Dayami, probably a girl, had asked for a doll, a dollhouse, doll clothes and art supplies.

Heiss then posted his search about finding Dayami on Facebook, attaching photos, hoping some of his friends in Nogales might know the girl’s family. A few days passed with no results; Heiss worried that time was running out before Christmas. On December 19, 2018, he decided to send a private Facebook message to Radio Xeny, an AM radio station based in Nogales. To his surprise, someone from the station called him back right away and promised him to post his search on the station’s Facebook page immediately.

Paragraph 1:

The next morning, Heiss awoke to a message from Radio Xeny.

【題目】 “Outer space is a frontier that inspires us and unites us more than anything else,” declared the US Assistant Secretary for Arms Control, Dr. Yleem Poblete. “And as we continue to push further into our own solar system, new businesses will be built to seize the endless possibilities before us.”

However, there are growing concerns about the possibility of intentional acts of aggression in space, warned Dr. Poblete. The United States has raised concerns for many years that Russia is seeking the development and placement of anti-satellite weapons. As recently as February 2017, a Russian Air Force Squadron Commander stated that Russia is developing new missiles with the intention of destroying satellites. Furthermore, we have read statements from the Russian Ministry of Defense that it is working on creating “a mobile attack anti-satellite system”.

Vladimir Putin (Russian President) has alluded to space weapons being more “acceptable in the political and military respect”. This behavior continues despite Russia stating many times that it places a high priority on the promotion of the draft “Treaty on the Prevention of the Placement of Weapons in Outer Space” or PPWT.

The problem with such a treaty, said Dr. Poblete, is that it's difficult to determine an object’s true purpose simply by observing it on orbit. At this time, there are no means of distinguishing many objects' behaviors from that of a weapon, making outer space arms control measures like those in the proposed PPWT impractical.

In short, said Poblete, the proposed PPWT does not reduce the potential for conflict from extending into outer space. Plus, Russia may be engaging in the very behavior it claims to seek to prohibit.

“We must take concrete steps to strengthen the stability and sustainability of space,” declared Dr. Poblete, “The draft PPWT is not the right approach to accomplishing that. It is a questionable document, proposed by a country [Russia] that has routinely violated its international commitments.”

1What does America suspect Russia is doing?

A.Launching satellites for spying.B.Trading space weapons illegally.

C.Making profits from exploring space.D.Causing threat to space stability.

2Which is one common difficulty for controlling space weapons?

A.They are hard to be identified.B.They are not regulated by common rules.

C.There are too many to be managed.D.There is disagreement between nations.

3What does Dr. Poblete think of PPWT?

A.It is not specific enough.B.It will worsen international relationships.

C.Russia itself fails to observe it.D.We must work together to promote it.

4What is mainly discussed in the passage?

A.Where the key to space safety lies.B.What alarms the US as to space safety.

C.Why space conflicts are difficult to avoid.D.Who is to blame for the chaos in outer space.
