With petroleum reserves (石油儲量) decreasing, the search is on to replace gas with a cleaner, greener alternative.Though much eco-talk has centered on biofuels from corn and soybeans, the biofuel that looks more likely to replace petroleum comes from a most unlikely source:algae (藻類).
Algae, like corn, soybeans, and other crops, grow via photosynthesis (光合作用) and can be processed into fuel oil. However, they yield 30 times more energy than land crops such as soybeans, according to the U.S.Department of Energy. Many algae species also can grow in saltwater and polluted water-while corn and soy require arable land and fresh water that will be in short supply as the world's population balloons.
“If you replaced all the diesel (柴油) in the U.S.with soy biodiesel,it would take half the land mass of the U.S.to grow those soybeans,”says Matt Caspari, chief executive of Aurora Biofuels,a Berkeley,Calif.-based private firm that specializes in algae oil technology. On the other hand, the Energy Department says that if algae fuel replaced all the petroleum fuel in the United States,it would require 15,000 square miles, which is a few thousand miles larger that Maryland (12,407 square miles),the 42nd state in land area.
Another bonus:Because algae can be grown just about anywhere in a closed space, they 're being tested at several power plants across the nation as a carbon absorber.Smokestack emissions (煙囪排放物) can be pumped directly into the ponds, feeding the algae while keeping greenhouse gases out of the atmosphere.
Although processing technology for algae fuel—also known as “oilgae” in some environmentalist circles—is improving,it's still years away from reaching your local gas pump.“It's just a question of cost, because no large-scale facilities have been built yet,” Caspari says.

BRISBANE—Australian Olympic chief John Coates has said Greek athlete Katerina Thanou should not be awarded the Sydney Olympics 100 metres gold medal handed back by Marion Jones.
Jones, who this week admitted to steroid(類固醇)use in the build up to the Sydney Games, has returned the three gold medals and two bronzes she won in 2000.
But Thanou, the silver medalist in Sydney, was herself banned for two years after she failed to appear for a drug test at the 2004 Athens Olympics.
“I’d like to think that Katerina Thanou would not be awarded the gold medal,” Coates told the Australian Associated Press on Tuesday, “but there may be some legal difficulties for the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to overcome in order to reach that conclusion.”
Jamaica’s Tayna Lawrence won the 100m bronze medal in Sydney behind Jones and Thanou.
Coates also said he expected the United States Olympic Committee (USOC) to hand back the medals won by the women's 4x100m and 4x400m relay teams.
Two of Jones’s team mates in the 4x100m team which finished third in Sydney, Torri Edwards and Chryste Gaines, have also served doping(興奮劑)bans.
The U.S. women’s 4x100m relay team won the gold medal ahead of Jamaica and Russia.
“On the relays, it’s my expectation that the United States Olympic Committee will be required to also hand back the medals won by the other ladies who competed with Jones in the two relays,” Coates said.
“That is normal practice.”
The United States Olympic Committee (USCO) has publicly apologized to the organizers and competitors of the 2000 Sydney Games and the Australian public for Jones’s actions.
As part of the USOC’s apology, president Peter Ueberroth promised that the U.S. would send a clean team to next year’s Beijing Olympics.

A. Jones has got five gold medals at Sydney Olympics.
B. The USCO has returned medals in the two relays.
C. Thanou should receive Sydney gold medal.
D. Jones also took part in the women’s 4x100m relay race.
4. Why did Coates expect the USOC to hand back the medals won in the relay races?
A. Because the IOC required them to do so.
B. Because they didn’t take the first place in the relay races.
C. Because some of the runners of the U.S served doping bans.
D. Because they felt sorry for Jones’s actions.
5. What would probably happen next according to the passage?
A. Thanou would receive Sydney gold.

Believe it or not, going to school is not a legal(法定的) requirement in the United States. It
is a legal requirement that all kids be educated, though. When parents believe they can give their kids a better education--- or have other reasons for not wanting to send their kids to a local school --- they may choose home schooling.
However, if a kid hates school, home schooling is probably not the escape he is looking for. Home schooled students can learn just as much as they would in regular school if they and their parents work hard to cover all the subjects and experiences necessary. Parents who home school usually have higher levels of education than parents who do not. They already have the skills to educate themselves about teaching their kids.
Parents who home school have to be able to put the time and skill into not just teaching, but also researching lesson plans and resources(資源). So they have to know how to find the information necessary to teach their kids. State schools often provide home-schooling parents with a curriculum(課程), books and materials and places to meet. Some state schools will point parents to other resources for brushing up on forgotten subjects. Or parents may receive continuing education at local colleges or universities.
小題1:According to American law, _______________.
A.a(chǎn)ll kids shall go to school
B.a(chǎn)ll kids must receive education
C.home schooling parents shall receive continuing education
D.state schools must give support to home-schooling parents
小題2: According to the text, most home-schooling parents________________.
A.a(chǎn)re short of money B.dislike schools

小題3: Which of the following is NOT true about parents who home school?
A.They should have enough time.
B.They should have some skills in teaching.
C.They must receive special curriculums at the university.
D.They have to be able to know lesson plans and resources.
小題4: The underlined phrase “brushing up on” in the last paragraph can best be replaced by _____.
A.reviewingB.changing
C.choosingD.discussing
小題5: What can be inferred from the text?
A.Home schooled kids learn fewer.
B.Home schooled kids spend less time studying.
C.Being a home-schooling parent needs a lot of effort.
D.Home schooling will replaced school education.

All of us eat every day, but most of us don’t understand nutrition(營養(yǎng)). How much do you know about good nutrition? Are the following statements true or false?
1. People who don’t eat meat can stay healthy.
True. As long as people eat enough milk, eggs and meat alternates(替代物), they can get enough protein.
2. Fresh vegetables cooked at home are always more nutritious than canned vegetables.
False. The difference depends more on how vegetables are prepared than whether they are fresh or canned. Vegetables cooked in too much water can lose a large quantity of vitamins.
3. Food eaten between meals can be just as good for health as food eaten at regular meals.
True. Nutritional value depends on what types of food you eat, not when you eat them. Eating an egg or an orange between meals can contribute to a good diet.
4. Taking extra vitamins beyond the recommended daily allowances won’t give you more energy.
True. It’s widely believed that extra vitamins provide more energy. But taking more than the baby needs doesn’t make it function better, just as overfilling your gas tank doesn’t make your car run better.
5. Natural vitamins are better supplements(補(bǔ)充)for the diet than synthetic vitamins.
False. There is no difference. A vitamin has the same properties(性質(zhì))and specific chemical structure whether made in a laboratory or taken from plant or animal parts.
6. Older people need the same amount of vitamins as younger people.
True. Older people need the same quantity of vitamins as younger people although they need fewer calories. Certain illnesses raise the requirements for some vitamins, but that is true for the young as well as the old.
7. Food grown in poor soil is lower in vitamins than food grown in rich sold.
False. The vitamins in our foods are made by the plants themselves. They don’t come from the soil.
However, the minerals in a plant depend on the minerals in the soil.
If you have answered these questions correctly, you can say you know much about food and nutrition by today’s standards. But remember that nutrition is a growing science and that may be aged as new information is obtained.
小題1:The main purpose of the passage is to           .
A.list today’s standards of some food and nutrition
B.introduce what should be eaten and what not
C.explain what is helpful to your health and what is not
D.test our nutrition IQ by judging the problems listed

Scientists today are making greater effort to study ocean currents (洋流) . Most do it using satellites and other high-tech equipment. However, ocean expert Curtis Ebbesmeyer does it in a special way -- by studying movements of random floating garbage. A scientist with many years’ experience, he started this type of research in the early 1990s when he heard about hundreds of athletic shoes washing up on the shores of the northwest coast of the United States. There were so many shoes that people were setting up swap meets to try and match left and right shoes to sell or wear.
Ebbesmeyer found out in his researches that the shoes — about 60,000 in total — fell into the ocean in a shipping accident. He phoned the shoe company and asked if they wanted the shoes back. As expected, the company told him that they didn't. Ebbesmeyer realized this could be a great experiment. If he learned when and where the shoes went into the water and tracked where they landed, he could learn a lot about the patterns of ocean currents.
The Pacific Northwest is one of the world's best areas for beachcombing(海灘搜尋) because winds and currents join here, and as a result, there is a group of serious beachcombers in the area. Ebbesmeyer got to know a lot of them and asked for their help in collecting information about where the shoes landed. In a year he collected reliable information on 1, 600 shoes. With this data, he and a colleague were able to test and improve a computer program designed to model ocean currents, and publish the findings of their study.
As the result of his work, Ebbesmeyer has become known as the scientist to call with questions about any unusual objects found floating in the ocean. He has even started an association of beachcombers and ocean experts, with 500 subscribers from West Africa to New Zealand. They have recorded all lost objects ranging from potatoes to golf gloves.

Urban citizens(市民)can enjoy a more colorful life than rural citizens.Townspeople are wellinformed because they have the easier access to news, while country people are uniformed because these districts are hard to get to.Urban traffic is so welldeveloped that the residents there often visit exhibitions and parks which are only a short bus ride away. For country people this is a major operation which involves considerable planning.Shopping,a necessary activity in everyday life is more convenient in the city than in the countryside. Townspeople can buy what they want at any time of a day.But rural residents go to town at most once a week.So after shopping they always stagger home loaded with heavy purchases. As for as meals and clothes concerned, townspeople are wellfed and welldressed as there is an adequate(足夠的)supply of goods. But rural residents are too busy to pay particular attention to them.It is for these reasons that more and more people are moving into the city and looking for a rest there.
On the contrary, some people are attracted by the rural area.Air pollution, noise and overcrowding which are the biggest problems confronting townspeople seem strange for rural residents.Medical studies have proved that rural residents can live longer than urban residents, because they are free from a polluted environment. In addition, the crime rate in the city is several times higher than in the countryside. As is known to all,the life in any city is much more expensive than in the countryside. So the safe, quiet and cheap life in the country appeals to(對……有吸引力)many city residents.
