閱讀下列短文,從每題所給的四個選項(A、B、C和D)中,選出最佳選項。

John was waiting for the girl whose heart he knew, but whose face he didn’t,the girl with the rose.Thirteen months ago,in a Florida library he took a book off the shell and found himself interested in the notes in the margin(頁邊).The soft handwriting showed a thoughtful soul and insightful(有洞察力的)mind.

In front of the book,he discovered the name,Miss Hollis Maynell. With time and effort he got her address. He wrote her a letter introducing himself and inviting her to keep in touch.

During the next year and one month the two grew to know each other through the mail.A romance started.John requested a photograph, but she refused. She felt that if he really cared, it wouldn’t matter what she looked like.Later they agreed on their first meeting—7:00 pm at Grand Central Station in New York.

“You’ll recognize me,” she wrote,“by the red rose I’ll be wearing my coat.” So at 7:00 he was in the station looking for the girl with the red rose.

A girl in a green suit was coming toward him,her figure long and slim and her eyes were blue as flowers.Almost uncontrollably he came to her,and just at this moment he saw Hollis Maynell—a woman well past 40.The girl was walking quickly away.

He did not hesitate, saying,“I’m John, and you must be Miss Maynell.I am so glad you could meet me. May I take you to dinner?”

The woman smiled, “I don’t know what this is about, son,” she answered,“but the young lady in the green suit begged me to wear this rose on my coat. And she said if you were to ask me out to dinner,I should tell you that she is waiting for you in the restaurant across the street. She said it was some kind of test!”

It’s not difficult to admire Miss Maynell’s wisdom. The true nature of a heart is seen in its response to the unattractive.

I ALMOST failed out of college and it nearly broke my self-confidence. I had been at the top of my high school class, the total golden child. So when I decided that I wanted to attend Columbia University for graduate school, I was sure it would be close to impossible.

My goals were to prove to myself that my years of academic success in secondary school had not happened by chance and prepare for a career in children’s media. But first I had to get in.

So I enrolled (報名) in a GRE test prep course and threw myself into the class. The first part was pretty scary and by the third, I knew it wasn’t going to get any easier. I reconsidered my plan to take the GRE.

For the first time in my life, I considered how I should go about getting into graduate school. What were my special skills? Would any of them get me into graduate school?

I got a job working on a project sponsored by the dean’s (系主任的) office on campus and enrolled in a class. I had a new plan: Be a top student in the class while working on campus, get letters of recommendation from my boss and my professor, then hope that playing to my strengths like writing interesting papers would be enough for my application.

I worked my butt off (很努力工作) that semester. With finals approaching, I felt confident I would get an “A” in the course, so it was time for step two. I asked my boss to write a letter of recommendation. She immediately agreed. But my professor said no. She did not know me well enough and the semester was not completed. However, I decided I just would not take no for an answer. I asked if she would least write a short note unofficially supporting my application. After some uncomfortable conversations, she finally agreed. In the end, I got in!

I revisit that moment of persistence (執(zhí)著) again and again. I have leapt into many other opportunities since then. Now I am starting a company born out of my graduate school research in children’s media. Our first product is a mobile game for teen girls that breaks down major life milestones (里程碑) into missions (任務). On its surface, the product helps girls connect with each other. But it also helps them develop the tools to live life without limits.

Movie fans know that their action hero Superman does not really fly. And, in the movie Superman Returns, another visual trick is played on viewers. The man they see flying is not real.He is what is called a virtual actor. The first step in creating this digital actor is to have a real person stand in a room called a light stage.A computer then captures the outlines and shapes of his face and records how they throw off light .Paul Debevec is with the Institute for Creative Technologies at the University of Southern California.

“We can light them with very specially computer-controlled illumination(照明)and take photos of them from seven different viewpoints with high quality digital still cameras.”

Mr.Debevec is part of a team working to create computerized images of people, objects and environments that look and act real. The light stage permits actors to be turned into digital versions of themselves much like the blue creatures in the movie Avatar. The real world could soon be using a similar technology.Computer experts at the Institute are developing a 3-D video teleconferencing system. It would send a video image of a person into a meeting room. That image would be able to work with the people in the room, who would see it in 3-D without special eyeglasses.Paul Debevec says:

“The person who is being transmitted to a remote location can actually look around at the people in the room and everybody in that room knows who they’re looking at .And that’s such a fundamental part of human communication.”

He believes the business world will begin to use3-D video teleconferencing in the next five years.” It’s also a medium with which young people today are particularly comfortable,” he said.A demonstration of an interaction between an earthquake survivor and students may be possible in a year.In 10 years, we may be able to play 3-D video games without special glasses.

Those accustomed to looking through thousands of books in big bookstores may find Japan’s Morioka Shoten a little strange. That’s because this tiny bookstore that is located in luxury shopping district of Ginza,in Tokyo offers just one title to its customers.

Opened in May 2015,Morioka Shoten(Japanese for bookstore)is the brainchild of Yoshiyuki Morioka. The experienced bookseller began his career as a bookstore clerk in Tokyo’s Kanda district before branching out to open his own store. It was here while organizing book readings that he realized that customers usually came into the store with one title in mind.Morioka began to wonder if a store could exist by selling many copies of just one single book.In November 2014,he partnered with his two friends,to establish a unique bookstore with the idea‘A Single Room,A Single Book.’

科目:高中英語 來源:2015-2016學年浙江平湖當湖中學高一3月階段考試英語試卷(解析版) 題型:閱讀理解

閱讀理解。

It is reported that conservation groups(自然環(huán)境保護小組)in North America have been arguing about the benefits and dangers of wolves. Some groups believe wolves should be killed.Other people believe wolves must be protected so that they will not disappear from the wilderness(荒野)

For Killing Wolves

In Alaska, the wolf almost disappeared a few years ago, because hunters were killing hundreds of them for sport. However, laws were established to protect the wolves from sportsmen and people who catch the animals for their fur.So the wolf population has greatly increased. Now there are so many wolves that they are destroying their own food supply.

A wolf naturally eats animals in the deer family.People in the wilderness also hunt deer for food. Many of the animals have been destroyed by the very cold winters recently and by changes in the wilderness plant life. When the deer can’t find enough food, they die.

If the wolves continue to kill large numbers of deer, their prey(獵物)will disappear some day.And the wolves will.too.So we must change the cycle of life in the wilderness to balance the ecology(生態(tài)學).If we killed more wolves,we would save them and their prey from dying out. We’d also save some farm animals.

In another northern state, wolves attack cows and chickens for food.Farmers want the government to send biologists(生物學家) to study the problem. They believe it necessary to kill wolves in some areas and to protect them in places where there is a small wolf population.

Against Killing Wolves

If you had lived long ago,you would have heard many different stories about the dangerous wolf.According to most stories, hungry wolves often kill people for food.Even today, the stories of the “big bad wolf'"will not disappear.

But the fact is that wolves are afraid of people.a(chǎn)nd they seldom travel in areas where there is a human smell. When wolves eat other animals, they usually kill the very young or the sick and injured. The strongest survive. No kind of animal would have survived through the centuries if the weak members had not lived. And has always been a law of nature.

Although some people say it is good sense to kill wolves,we say it is nonsense! Researchers have found wolves and their prey living in balance. The wolves keep the deer population from becoming too large, and that keeps a balance in the wilderness plant life.

The real problem is that the areas where wolves can live are being used by people.Even if wilderness land is not used directly for human needs, the wolves can’t always find enough food.So they travel to the nearest source, which is often a farm. Then there is danger. The “big bad wolf” has arrived! And everyone knows what happens next.

1.According to the passage, some people in North America favor killing wolves for all the following reasons EXCET that

A.there are too many wolves

B.they kill large numbers of deer

C.they attack cows and chickens for food

D.they destroy the wilderness plant life

2.Some people are against killing wolves because

A.wolves help to keep the ecological balance in the wilderness

B.there is too small a wolf population in the wilderness

C.there are too many deer in the wilderness

D.wolves are afraid of people and never attack people

3.According to those against killing wolves, when wolves eat other animals,

A.they never eat strong and healthy ones

B.they always go against the law of nature

C.they might help this kind of animals survive in nature

D.they disturb the ecological balance in the wilderness

4.The last sentence “And everyone knows what happens next” implies that in such cases

A.farm animals will be in danger and have to be shipped away

B.wolves will kill people and people will in turn kill them

C.wolves will find enough food sources on farms

D.people will leave the areas where wolves can live
