When The New Republic magazine predicted who would win the 2016 Nobel Prize in literature on Oct 6, it said: “Not Bob Dylan. That’s for sure.”
But the award came as a surprise to many. On Oct 13, the famous US musician was named the Nobel laureate by the Swedish Academy. He has “created new poetic expressions within the great American song tradition", according to the organization.
Although Dylan, 75, is not really thought to be a literary(文學(xué)的) writer, he has given the world a lot of creative work over 50 years, especially when it comes to his folk songs.
In his 1985 album Biograph, Dylan wrote about the appeal(魅力) of folk music to him. Rock songs “weren’t serious enough or didn’t reflect(反映) life in a realistic way", according to Dylan. But folk, was “a more serious type of thing. The songs are filled with more sadness; more joy …much deeper feelings".
Dylan’s music and lyrics spoke to many people during the 1960s. His lyrics were often about great political issues, such as the civil rights movement. The 1960s were a time of change when the young were making sure that their voices were heard. The idea is most famously expressed in Dylan's The Times They Are a -Changing (1964), which warns the world, “You better start swimming or you'll sink(下沉) like a stone. For the times they are a-changing!”
There were complaints that a literary prize had been given to a singer. But ancient “Greek poets Homer and Sappho wrote poetic works that were meant to be listened to, that were meant to be performed, often with instruments — and it’s the same way with Dylan", the Swedish Academy’s permanent secretary Sara Danius told CNN.
It could even be said that giving the important prize to Dylan has brought back an old literary tradition. The millions whose lives Dylan’s words and music have changed will surely welcome the award.
1.Dylan found folk music attractive because ________.
A. it brought joy to people
B. it reflected life on a much deeper level
C. it could be used to express feelings freely
D. it needed more creativity than other types of music
2.Which of the following statements is TRUE about Dylan according to the article?
A. He never thought that he would win the Nobel Prize.
B. All of his influential works were created in the 1960s.
C. His songs expressed people’s feelings well during the 1960s.
D. His fans were mostly young people who were active in political movements.
3.According to the last two paragraphs, ________.
A. lyrics can be seen as a literary form
B. a literary prize should not be given to a singer
C. Dylan’s works were inspired by Greek poets
D. Dylan won the award because he influenced many song-writers
4.What’s the author’s attitude toward giving Bob Dylan the 2016 Nobel Prize in literature?
A. Unconcerned. B. Objective. C. Doubtful. D. Supportive.

Lions are opportunists. They prefer to eat without having to do too much work. When resting in the shade, they are also watching the sky to see what is flying by, and even in the heat of the day they will suddenly start up and run a mile across the plains to find out what is going on. If another animal has made a kill, they will drive it off and take the dill for themselves. A grown lion can easily eat 60 pounds of meat at a single feeding. Often they eat until it seems painful for them to lie down.
The lionesses, being thinner and faster, are better hunters than the males. But the males don’t mind. After the kill they move in and take the test share.
Most kills are made at night or just before daybreak. We have seen many, many daylight attempts but only ten kills. Roughly, it’s about twenty daytime attempts for one kill.
When lions are hiding for an attack by a water hole, they wait patiently and can charge at any second. The kill is the exciting moment in the day-to-day life of the lion, since these great animals spend most of their time, about 20 hours a day, sleeping and resting.
Lions are social cats, and when they are having a rest, they love to touch each other. After drinking at a water hole, a lioness rests her head on another’s back. When walking, young lions often touch faces with older ones, an act of close ties among members of the group.
1.By describing lions as “opportunists” in the first paragraph, the author means to say that lions ________.
A. like to take advantage of other animals B. are clever animals
C. are cruel animals D. like to take every chance to eat
2.According to the text, which of the following is true?
A. Lions make most kills in the daytime.
B. It doesn’t take lions too much time to make a kill.
C. Males care more about eating than active killing.
D. Lions are curious about things happening around them.
3.How can we know that lions are social animals?
A. They depend on each other. B. They look after each other well.
C. They readily share what they have. D. They enjoy each other’s company.
4.What would be the best title for the text?
A. Lions, Skilled Hunters B. Lions, Social Cats
C. Lions at Work and Play D. Powerful Lions

Sports can help you keep fit and get in touch with nature. However, whether you are on the mountains, in the waves, or on the grassland, you should be aware that your sport of choice might have great influence on the environment.
Some sports are resource-hungry. Golf, as you may know, eats up not only large areas of countryside, but also tons of water. Besides, all sorts of chemicals and huge amounts of energy are used to keep its courses(球場) in good condition. This causes major environmental effects. For example, in the dry regions of Portugal and Spain, golf is often held responsible for serious water shortage in some local areas.
There are many environment-friendly sports. Power walking is one of them that you could take up today. You don't need any special equipment except a good pair of shoes; and you don't have to worry about resources and your purse. Simple and free, power walking can also keep you fit. If you walk regularly, it will be good for your heart and bones. Experts say that 20 minutes of power walking daily can make you feel less anxious, sleep well and have better weight control.
Whatever sport you take up, you can make it greener by using environment-friendly equipment and buying products made from recycled materials. But the final goal should be "green gyms". They are better replacements(代替物)for traditional health clubs and modern sports centers. Members of green gyms play sports outdoors, in the countryside or other open spaces. There is no special requirement for you to start your membership. And best of all, it's free.
1.Which of the following is the author most probably in favor of?
A. Playing basketball in a gym.
B. Motor racing in the desert.
C. Cycling around a lake.
D. Swimming in a sports center.
2.What do we know about golf from the passage?
A. It is popular in Portugal and Spain.
B. It needs water and electricity to keep its courses green.
C. It pollutes the earth with chemicals and wastes.
D. It causes water shortages around the world.
3.The author uses power walking as an example mainly because ________.
A. it uses fewer resources
B. it improves our health
C. it is an outdoor sport
D. it is recommended by experts
4.The author writes the passage to ________.
A. show us the function of major sports
B. encourage us to go in for green sports
C. discuss the major influence of popular sports
D. introduce different types of environment-friendly sports

Cancer is a terrible disease. Every year in the UK, more than 330,000 people get cancer, and doctors usually use a kind of therapy called radiotherapy to treat people. This treatment uses high energy X-rays to destroy the disease, but the effects of treatment can be nearly as bad as the cancer. As the X-rays destroy the cancer cells, they also damage healthy cells that are next to them. It’s like using a shotgun to kill an insect. When really important parts of a person’s body are hurt by the X-ray energy, it can have very bad results. It can also make more cancer grow in the damaged places in the future.
A new therapy that uses protons(質(zhì)子) instead of X-ray energy could be the answer to the problem. In a project called PRaVDA, scientists from the UK and South Africa are working to this. If X-ray energy is like a shotgun, then protons can work more like a laser. Scientists can make protons travel through someone’s body without hurting them, and only damage the cancer.
The PRaVDA scientists use computers to make a 3-D model of the cancer cells to make sure the protons go to the right places. “It’s more accurate,” said Michaela Esposito, PhD, from the University of Lincoln.
Building this technology was very difficult, though. Professor Nigel Allinson from the University of Lincoln, the project leader, has put together a team of many different kinds of scientists with different skills. Those skills were all needed to make what he calls “one of the most complex” medical machines ever. It’s also 10 times more expensive than X-ray radiotherapy. Even so, Allinson believes that most cancer treatment will be done by protons in the future. “I think it will improve the quality of life of many cancer patients,” he says.
1.What point does the first paragraph make?
A. Cancer is a really terrible disease.
B. Lots of people get cancer every year in the UK.
C. Radiotherapy isn’t a perfect way to cure cancer.
D. Radiotherapy is a commonly used therapy against cancer.
2.What can be concluded about the new therapy?
A. It’s much cheaper than X-ray radiotherapy.
B. It depends on protons to locate the cancer cells.
C. Damaging the cancer by replacing X-rays with lasers is much more accurate.
D. It uses protons to damage the cancer cells without damaging healthy cells.
3.According to Professor Allinson, the new therapy ________.
A. will enable cancer patients to enjoy a better life
B. will cure most cancers in the future
C. will ensure that cancer patients live longer
D. will replace radiotherapy completely
4.What can be inferred from the text?
A. Science and technology are a double-edged sword.
B. Not every cancer patient will be able to afford proton therapy.
C. Radiotherapy is completely the wrong way to cure cancer.
D. The complex medical machine mentioned will soon be put into use.
