故將 an改為a。

故將 that改為which。

故將but 改為and。

故將it 改為them。

as well as是固定短語(yǔ),連接并列主語(yǔ),意為 “和”。故在well后加as。

This experience made me really understand the meaning of “l(fā)ive a day at a time”.

make+賓語(yǔ)+do sth.(不帶to的不定式),該結(jié)構(gòu)意為“使某人做某事”。

For a long time I had been longed for a piano of my own to practice on. There was a piano shop on the street through that I went to the school every day. Whenever I passed the shop, look at the piano which stood in the corner of the shop window. What desperately I had been dreaming day and night to possess a piano like that. Unfortunate, my father was just a clerk, but he could not afford to buy me an expensive piano, though he knew that I was very anxious for one. In my birthday, I went as usual to the shop window to look at the piano, but to my surprised the piano had gone. In fact, I should not have been surprised, other had the right to buy it, if they could afford to. Tears filled my eyes when I thought of being able to see that piano any more.

I was born and raised in England in a culture where privacy and “keeping yourself to yourself” were valued traditions. Speaking to strangers was not encouraged. People were most hospitable(好客的) and friendly—but only once they had been introduced to new people.

However, I have been lucky enough to spend some time in both Italy and the US, where I found traditions of hospitality and politeness to be very different.

I experienced Italian hospitality firsthand on a crowded railway carriage travelling, one afternoon, from Genoa to Florence. Sinking gratefully into an empty seat, I was berated(斥責(zé)) in rapid Italian by a gentleman who was returning to this seatit had not been “spare” after all. I apologized in English, and got up to allow him back into the seat. The gentleman obviously had no understanding of the English language, but he, too, realized my genuine mistake. He smiled and gestured for me to remain in the seat, and he himself remained standing in the corridor for the remainder of the journey. The other occupants of the carriage smiled and nodded at me and made me feel quite welcome amongst them. I feel that if this had been in England, a foreigner who made a mistake would not always be so kindly treated.

Transport also featured in the differences I noticed between English and American culture. I flew to New York on a plane with mainly English passengers. We sat together in near silence. Nobody spoke to me nor, as I expected, to anyone else they did not know. They felt it was not polite to intrude on someone else's privacy. However, when I travelled across the United States, whether by plane or Greyhound bus, I was never short of conversation. Conversation was going on all around me and whoever sat next to me was happy to introduce themselves and ask me about myself. They obviously felt it would have been rude not to speak to another person, whether they were strangers or not.

1What do we know about the occupants of the carriage when the author was travelling in Italy?

A.They all laughed at the author for his mistake.

B.They would not bear a mistake like the author's in public.

C.They were all on the side of the gentleman.

D.They all showed their understanding of the author's mistake.

2The author probably believes the Italian people are________.

A.coldB.rude

C.hospitableD.helpful

3According to the last paragraph, English passengers sat in near silence because________.

A.they were all strangers to each other

B.they were too tired to speak

C.privacy was a valued tradition in England

D.everybody had their own share of privacy

4The purpose of the author is to tell us ________.

A.his travelling experience

B.cultural differences to show hospitality and politeness

C.the culture shock he experienced in Italy and the US

D.how to adapt ourselves to a new culture

In my childhood, my parents sent me to learn Chinese handwriting, believe that it could benefit me great. However, things are quite opposite to their expectations. Not only did get bored with hours of practice and I doubted the value of it. But my later experience proved that practicing handwriting was both essential and benefit. When I entered into high school, handwriting became a fantastic way for me to relax. It was at that time that I realized what important it was to master a certain skill. Don’t refuse to learn the skill because you will find it helpful late.

Dear Sir,

I have to travel every day from Souk Road to the airport. Two buses travel along their route: the number 49 and number 16. But by the time the number 16 bus reaches Souk Road it is always full, so I can’t get on it. I have to wait for the number 49, because sometimes there are empty seats on it.

The timetable says that there are buses from Souk Road to the airport every ten minutes. If this is so, why do I have to wait half an hour for a bus nearly every day?

The regulations (規(guī)章) say that if there are empty seats on a bus, the bus must stop at every stop where people are waiting. Why do the half-empty buses go straight past me when I am standing at the bus stop?

The regulations say that no bus may carry more than 40 seated passengers and 20 standing passengers. Yesterday I was the first to get off the bus when it reached the airport. I counted the other passengers as they got off. There were 129 of them.

It is clear that our bus companies break the regulations and think little of their passengers. Can nothing be done to make your service better?

Spain

With its sky-high scores in friendliness and fun, adventure in Spain is always as close as the nearest street. Combining high scores in both scenery and fun, Thailand attracts a mix of people that make for an adventurous atmosphere. This can best be experienced on the island of Koh Phangan. Visitors looking for more traditional exciting adventure should head to Chiang Mai to try whitewater rafting(漂流), or attempt waterfall abseiling(沿繩索滑下) at Doi Inthanon National Park.
