【答案】Dear William,

I am writing to express my appreciation for your kindness.

Yesterday I left my passport in your taxi because of my carelessness. Luckily, you found it and spread the message on the Internet. Then one of my friends saw it and helped me contact you to get my passport back. Without your timely assistance, I would be in trouble now. If I lose my passport, I will have trouble going on traveling here and going home.

Thank you again for your kindness and I do hope to have the opportunity to see you again.

Yours sincerely,

Li Hua

【題目】How to Give Directions

Whether you’re telling someone how to get your house or guiding a stranger to a local museum, you should know how to give good directions.

1. Explain the route based on where the person is coming from. Before you start giving directions, you need to ask the person where exactly they’re coming from. 1

2. Give the simplest route. While it may seem attractive to give directions to your favorite shortcut, this could wind up doing more harm than good. Instead, give the simplest directions that are least likely to confuse the person.2

3. Share the safest route. If there are several routes and some of them are especially dangerous, give the safest route. 3 Whether it’s narrow road or a high crime neighborhood, take threats to the person’s safety into consideration.

4. 4 Otherwise, you may give incorrect directions that could get the person lost. Give directions for routes that you’ve taken many times, rather than trying to describe a shortcut or another route you don’t know as well.

5. Warn the person about confusing parts of the route. If there is a confusing part of the route you’re providing, tell the person about it very carefully. 5 Some points of confusion could include roads with little notice and turns that are very slight.

A.Create a map of the route and share it.

B.Don’t suggest routes you haven’t taken.

C.Besides, tell them when to expert the confusing part.

D.As your directions will depend on which way they are headed.

E.Don’t use words, phrases or names which only the locals know.

F.This way, you’ll decrease: the chance of the person’s getting last.

G.As the person you’re advising won’t know the dangers they’ll be driving through.

【題目】 Warm water freezes more quickly than cold water. Sir Francis Bacon said that almost four hundred years ago. But few people believed him until 1970. In that year a Canadian scientist George Kill proved the English professor was right. Dr Kill filled an open oil pail () with cold water. He filled another with warm water. He put both in the same low temperature. The warm water froze first. The lack of covers on the pails is the secret. Some of the warm water changed into vapor. This meant that less of the warm water was left to be frozen. And so the warm water froze faster than the cold water even though it had a greater temperature drop to make.

1Hundreds of years ago, Sir Francis Bacon found _______.

A.the temperature of warm water drops faster than that of cold water

B.warm water is heavier than cold water

C.warm water has the same temperature as cold water

D.warm water is not as useful as cold water

2Leave a pail with warm water and another pail with cold water in the same low temperature, you’ll find that _______.

A.cold water freezes first

B.warm water turns into ice before cold water

C.warm water and cold water freeze at the same time

D.much of cold water is changed into air.

3Why does warm water freeze first in the same freezing weather? _______

A.Because some of the warm water turns to vapor, the amount becomes less than that of cold water.

B.Because warm water is lighter than cold water.

C.Because the temperature of warm water is lower than that of cold water.

D.Because cold water freezes with more difficulty than warm water.

【題目】 Imagine you are on a long car trip. It is night and you take a wrong turn onto a dark country road. With a sinking feeling, you realize that you have no idea where you are.

1, and the answer is written in light. A shining compass face, with north, south, east and west at the four points, and a big needle are pointing at north. What a relief! You turn your car around and head in the right direction guided by the sky.

For migrating birds, finding their way over long distances through the darkest nights is their second nature. 2 — directions written by light and magnetism (磁力). Some birds journey thousands of miles in their twice-yearly journeys. 3, like mountain ranges and rivers, to help decide the directions; but birds may also navigate using the stars, and by sensing — or even “seeing” — the Earth’s invisible magnetic field.

For many years, scientists have been studying what’s behind the strong ability of migrating birds to find their way to their winter and summer homes. Here is one thing that they agree on. 4. This compass leads them to make their very first autumn flight in the direction that has been long-travelled by the rest of their species. 5.

A.Then you glance up at the sky

B.So birds are born knowing which way home is

C.They do it in part by reading directions in the sky

D.Magnetism is important for all animals, especially birds and fishes

E.When they’re on the way, they take the advantage of familiar landmarks

F.Migratory baby birds are already equipped with a kind of present inner compass

G.In birds, migration means two-way journeys — onward journey and backward journey

【題目】閱讀下面短文,根據(jù)所給情節(jié)進(jìn)行續(xù)寫(xiě),使之構(gòu)成一個(gè)完整的故事。

A little boy selling magazines for school walked up to a house that people rarely visited. The house was very old and shabby and the owner hardly ever came out. When he did come out, he would not say hello to his neighbors or passers-by but simply just glare at them.

The boy knocked on the door and waited, sweating from fear of the old man. The boy’s parents told him to stay away from the house, and a lot of the other neighborhood children were told the same thing from their parents.

As he was ready to walk away, the door slowly opened. “What do you want?” the old man said impatiently. The little boy was very afraid but he had a quota(份額) to meet for school with selling the magazines. So he got up the courage and said, “Uh, sir, I am selling these magazines and uh, I was wondering if you would like to buy one from me.”

The old man just stared at the boy without a word. The boy could see inside the old man’s house and saw that he had dog figurines(小雕像) on the fireplace mantle. “Do you collect dogs?” The little boy asked. “Yes, I have many collections in my house. They are my family here and they are all I have.” The boy then felt sorry for the man, as it seemed that he was a very lonely soul.

“Well, I do have a magazine here for collectors. It is perfect for you. I also have one about dogs since you like dogs so much.” The old man was ready to close the door on the boy and said, “No, boy. I don’t need any magazines of any kind, now goodbye.”

The little boy was sad that he was not going to make his quota with the sale. He was also sad for the old man being so alone in the house that he owned. The boy went home and then had an idea. He had a little dog figurine that he got some years ago from an aunt. The figurine did not mean nearly as much to him since he had a real live dog and a large family.
