閱讀理解

An ichthyologist is a scientist who studies fish. Most people who do this job say they love their work because it is very rewarding and varied. They work not only inside a laboratory, but also out in the field.Fieldwork includes traveling to rivers, oceans and lakes in order to collect information and specimens(樣本).Reading, writing and speaking are also very important to the job.Fish scientists need to read the research of other scientists. They must be able to write up their own research clearly so that others can follow it.They also need to be able to give lectures about their findings, so that they can spread knowledge.

Ichthyologists who wish to specialize can choose any one of three areas of study. The first area is aquaculture(水產養(yǎng)殖).This involves the study and practice of fish farming and management.Because it is a rather new study, there are very few job opportunities available. However, as there is so much to discover, many see it as an exciting area for a new ichthyologist to enter. The second area is fisheries science, which means working with a team of scientist to find out more about different fish species. The third area is about the protection of natural fish populations. This is very important today, given that many fish species are in danger of dying out because of the actions of humans.

To become a successful fish scientist, you need to have a curious mind and be able to work on your own.You also need to be able to handle equipment and perform experiments; but most importantly, you must love fish.To become an ichthyologist, you will need to train at a university to pass a Bachelor of Science degree. For this, you will need to be good at mathematics, physical science and biology. Then, you will need to study for another year to complete an honors degree in ichthyology. This honors degree contains coursework about all aspects of fish. You also need to complete a research paper.

[ ]

科目:高中英語 來源:安徽省靈璧一中2010屆高三下學期第三次模擬考試英語試卷 題型:閱讀理解

Vincent Van Gogh was not always an artist. In fact, he wanted to be a church minister and was even sent to the Belgian mining community of Borinage in 1879. He discovered that the miners there endured terrible working conditions and poverty-level wages. Their families were skin-and-bone and struggled simply to survive. He felt concerned that the small pay he received from the church allowed him a reasonable lifestyle, which, in contrast, seemed to him unfair.
One cold February evening, while he watched the miners trudging home, he spotted an old man staggering toward him across the fields, wrapped in a burlap(粗麻布) bag for warmth. Van Gogh laid his own clothing out on the bed, set aside enough for one change, and decided to give the rest away. He gave the old man a suit of clothes and he gave his overcoat to a pregnant woman whose husband had been killed in a cave-in.
He lived on starvation food and spent his salary on food for the miners. When children in one family caught typhoid fever, though feverish himself, he packed up his bed and took it to them.
A wealthy family in the community offered him free room and board, Van Gogh declined the offer, stating that it was the final temptation (誘惑) he must reject if he was to faithfully serve his community of poor miners. He believed that if he wanted them to trust him, he must become one of them. And if they were to learn of the love of God through him, he must love them enough to share with them.
He was acutely aware of the big difference between words and actions. He knew that our lives always speak louder and clearer than our words. Maybe that is why Francis of Assisi often said to his monks, “Wherever you go, preach(講道). Use words if necessary.”
Others are “l(fā)istening” carefully to your actions. What are you saying to them?
1. We can infer form the passage ____________.
A. our lives always speak louder and clearer than our words
B. the miners there worked under excellent working conditions
C. the ministers lived a much better and easier life than the miners at the time
D. Van Gogh himself offered to work in the Belgian mining community of Borinage in 1879.
2. What does the underlined word “trudging” in the second paragraph mean?
A. Moving very quickly              B. Moving with quick light steps
C. Walking slowly for pleasure.         D. Walking with slow heavy steps.
3. According to the passage, which of the following words can best describe Van Gogh?
A. Ambitious and aggressive.          B. Considerate and sympathetic
C. Greedy and selfish.                D. Determined and grateful
4. What does the last paragraph want to tell us?
A. Use words if necessary             B. Actions speak louder than words
C. Rome was not built in a day.         D. Where there is a will there is a way.

科目:高中英語 來源:2014屆江蘇省高一下學期第一次月考英語試題 題型:閱讀理解

After we finished thirteen miles of hiking, we were tired and our muscles ached as we made our way back to New England. The car ride to the airport followed by a two-hour flight left our legs more worse condition than they were when we first came off the mountain we just climbed.

When we heard that two seats in first class on our next flight were available for a bit higher price, we jumped at the opportunity. Our spirits lifted immediately. After all, flying first class was a new experience for us, and we would end our adventure in comfort and style.

As we boarded the plane, we noticed that the stewardess(空姐) was working non-stop to ensure the comfort of the first class passengers. She could not walk by a seat without receiving an order. How much she must love her job! She smiled kindly at each one while attending to their needs.

As the stewardess walked by our seats near the end of the flight, I looked at her and said, “Thank you and I hope you have a great night.” She stopped, bent down, looked at me and said, “Excuse me.” I repeated my words and she smiled in a rather funny way, almost as if I had asked her a question that she did not know how to answer.

After a few moments she returned to our seats. “I can tell you work with the public,” she said. “Why do you think so?” I asked. She answered very quietly, “Because you are the only passenger here to say something nice to me tonight and I really appreciate your kindness.”

The sense of belonging to the elite(精英) group of people in first class disappeared as we heard her words. Our first class seats offered us more than a comfortable ride. We were reminded that without kindness, we would be flying in no class.

1.Where did the writer ever go hiking?

A.In a forest

2.Why did they choose to take a first class flight?

A.Because they were extremely tired

B.Because they wanted to go back as soon as possible

C.Because the tickets were cheaper

D.Because they wanted to enjoy the first class service.

3.After boarding the plane, the writer felt_______.

A.proud

B.uncomfortable

C.nervous

D.disappointed

4.When the stewardess first heard what the writer said, she_________.

A.didn’t understand the writer

B.knew what work the writer did

C.didn’t believe her ears
