【題目】Samuel Osmond is a 19yearold law student from Cornwall, England. He never studied the piano. However, he can play very difficult musical pieces by musicians such as Chopin and Beethoven just a few minutes after he hears them. He learns a piece of music by listening to it in parts. Then he thinks about the notes in his head. Two years ago, he played his first piece Moonlight Sonata(奏鳴曲)by Beethoven. He surprised everyone around him.

Amazed that he remembered this long and difficult piece of music and played it perfectly, his teachers say Samuel is unbelievable. They say his ability is very rare, but Samuel doesn't even realize that what he can do is special. Samuel wanted to become a lawyer as it was the wish of his parents, but music teachers told him he should study music instead. Now, he studies law and music.

Samuel can't understand why everyone is so surprised. “I grew up with music. My mother played the piano and my father played the guitar. About two years ago, I suddenly decided to start playing the piano, without being able to read music and without having any lessons. It comes easily to me—I hear the notes and can bear them in mind—each and every note,” says Samuel.

Recently, Samuel performed a piece during a special event at his college. The piece had more than a thousand notes. The audience was impressed by his amazing performance. He is now learning a piece that is so difficult that many professional pianists can't pla it. Samuel says confidently,“It's all about super memory—I guess I have that gift.”

However, Samuel's ability to remember things doesn't stop with music. His family says that even when he was a young boy, Samuel heard someone read a story, and then he could retell the story word for word.

Samuel is still only a teenager. He doesn't know what he wants to do in the future. For now, he is just happy to play beautiful music and continue his studies.

【題目】閱讀下列短文,從每題所給的A、B、C和D項(xiàng)中,選出最佳選項(xiàng)。 August 2011 was my last month before the departure to Beijing. But I didn’t know that August would bring me an unforgettable meeting with one of the famous traditional Chinese kungfu masters, Sui Yunjiang. He came to my city with a series of conferences and was to stay for a fortnight. I was asked to be his interpreter and had to accompany him and his wife during all that time, as well as Viktor who was the organizer and the host.
According to the Chinese tradition, we called Sui Yunjiang master Sui shifu or Sui laoshi. His personality impressed me deeply. Maybe it was a fate(yuanfen), or something other, but it was not the first time I heard his name, since he used to come to my town every two years, mostly in August. However, I never saw him in person, nor did the translation for him. I lacked knowledge in wushu, but the master was very patient trying to explain to me every single word that I couldn’t comprehend. He was already in his sixties at that time, but, giving credit to his sharp mind, he could find a way with the youngest disciples(門徒) as well as the older ones. The two weeks that I had spent with that amazing family inspired me and I continued my kungfu practices in Beijing.
During all these three years now that I have known him since our first meeting, he never stopped surprising me with his strong, yet sensitive personality. Our lessons go far beyond simply learning kungfu technics. His teaching is more about life, about enjoying every single moment of it because it will not happen twice, about training our will and overcoming difficulties, about harmonious existence, and building relationships with other people. After every kungfu lesson, we are welcome into his house to drink tea. This is another lesson being taught — the mastery of chadao, or tea ceremony.
Miracles are everywhere. For me, a miracle is meeting Sui Yunjiang. I love being a journalist, interviewing and writing about people from different paths of life, but Sui laoshi is the only person who made such a strong impression on me.
(1)How did the writer meet Sui Yunjiang?
A.By being asked to be his interpreter.
B.By travelling in China.
C.By interviewing Chinese kungfu masters.
D.By discussing how to drink tea.
(2)The underlined phrase in Paragraph 2 is closest in meaning to ____________.
A.privately
B.mentally
C.personally
D.physically
(3)Which of the following best describes Sui Yunjiang?
A.Talented and productive.
B.Serious and boring.
C.Famous and unhappy.
D.Patient and friendly.
(4)From the last paragraph we can learn that____________.
A.miracles are everywhere
B.meeting Sui Yunjiang is unforgettable
C.being a journalist is the writer’s dream
D.the writer loves writing stories about life
(5)Which of the following is the best title of this passage?
A.Meeting the Master
B.Being a Journalist

【題目】閱讀下列短文,從每題所給的四個選項(xiàng)(A、B、C和D)中,選出最佳選項(xiàng)。
Singles' Day falls on every November 11th. No one is quite sure exactly who first thought it up, and the most widely-accepted story is that it emerged from the dorms of Nanjing University in 1993 when four single male students got together to discuss how to break free of the loneliness of single life. One suggested that because of the ones in the date, November 11 would be a good day to organize activities for singles.
Singles' Day, started by a small group of friends, gradually grew into something like the anti-Valentine's Day, a day China's single young people could use as an excuse to get together and have fun together.
Originally about being with friends and having fun, now Singles' Day is about shopping — mostly online shopping. How did this happen? It's a long story, but the short answer is Alibaba.
By the late 2000s, most of China's Internet users were familiar with Singles' Day. There might have been some small shops online and offline offering sales on that day earlier, but no major company until Alibaba launched its first Singles' Day online sale in 2009.
In that first year, Alibaba was the only major ecommerce company to offer a sale, and it featured just 27 brands offering discounts via its T-mall marketplace. The sale was definitely successful, but it wasn't enough to redefine the holiday on its own.
In the following year, Alibaba went bigger, offering more brands and deeper discounts. But other companies had noticed the potential of the 2009 sales bonanza and decided to follow suit. E-commerce platforms like JD had their first major Singles' Day sales in 2010, and overnight Singles' Day went from a T-mall sale to something that was beginning to look like Cyber Monday in some western countries.
Over the next few years, Alibaba, JD, and other Chinese e-commerce players all expanded their one-day discounts, and sales grew exponentially(以指數(shù)方式). On Singles' Day in 2012, Alibaba's marketplaces, Taobao and T-mall, did about $3 billion in sales. In 2013 that number nearly doubled, and Chinese shoppers had obliterated America's Cyber Monday spending records in just the first few hours of the sale. And it's only getting bigger.
(1).We can know that Singles' Day was first set __________.
A.by a large e-commerce company called Alibaba
B.for the young people who want to have fun together
C.to organize activities for singles to get rid of their loneliness
D.to express something against Valentine's Day
(2).Before 2009 on Singles' Day, single young people were most likely to __________.
A.just spend the day alone
B.have fun with friends
C.do some online shopping
D.go back home to visit parents
(3).Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?
A.By 2009, Singles' Day have already became a famous online-shopping day.
B.Cyber Monday in some western countries is to celebrate Singles' Day.
C.In 2013, Alibaba's marketplaces did about nearly $4 billion in sales.
D.Alibaba was the first major e-commerce company to offer a sale on Singles' Day.
(4).According to the last two paragraphs, we can know that__________.
A.Alibaba played an important part in the new definition of Singles' Day
B.other Chinese e-commerce company like JD followed Cyber Monday
C.Alibaba offered more brands and deeper discounts to make it bigger
D.Alibaba, Taobao,T-mall and JD are different e-commerce companies
(5).What is the passage mainly about?
A.The origin of Singles' Day.
B.The life of modern young single people.
C.The e-commerce company Alibaba.
D.How Singles' Day become a shopping day.

【題目】Elephants in Uganda are starting to come close to villages near national parks. The big animals are a real danger to people.

So, the Uganda Wildlife Authority has been giving people new tools to keep the elephants away: vuvuzelas. They are plastic instruments some fans use at sports events.

The instruments make a loud sound elephants do not like. The animals leave, and no one is harmed. A spokesperson for the Uganda Wildlife Authority says vuvuzelas work because they do not threaten the elephants. That is important because an elephant that feels threatened is more likely to attack. So far, no one has reported an elephant attacking in answer to a vuvuzela.

Officials and villagers have tried other ways to stop elephants from coming near farms and houses. They have built beehives – houses for flying insects that sting. They have hung ropes covered in spicy oil. They have dug long, deep holes. And they have used guns, called A-K47s.

An official from the Uganda Wildlife Authority explains that people shoot the gun in the air to scare the elephant. But over time, the elephants have stopped being afraid of the sound of the gun. They only look at the shooter and wave their ears.

Another official for the Uganda Wildlife Authority, Gessa Simblicious, says one elephant-prevention solution will not work everywhere in Uganda. And one day, elephants may accept the vuvuzela noise, just as they do the sound of the A-K47.

But right now, vuvuzelas are an effective, non-violent and fun way to deal with a serious problem.

1What’s vuvuzelas?

A. New tools some fans use at sports events.

B. New tool to save the elephants.

C. Plastic instruments to keep the elephants away.

D. Plastic instruments to threaten the elephants.

2Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?

A. Vuvuzelas work because they do not threaten the elephants.

B. An elephants will attack human being in answer to a vuvuzela,

C. Villagers have no way to stop elephants.

D. The elephants are always afraid of the sound of the gun.

3People shoot the gun in the air in order to ________.

A. shoot the elephants away

B. let the elephants stop being afraid of the sound

C. avoid the elephants hurting people

D. scare the elephants to leave the village

4The author believes that ________.

A. elephants are not afraid of vuvuzelas

B. Vuvuzelas can not stop elephants

C. vuvuzelas can solve this serious problem forever

D. elephants are used to the sound of vuvuzelas now

Dear Lan Lan,
I'm now writing to you at Hartsop, a village in the Lake District, a place to have most beautiful scenery(景色)in English couple here to spend Christmas with them. This was planned for overseas students to know British way of life by living with British families.
We came two days before Christmas and during our stay, we have had everything we expected. Christmas turkey, Christmas cake, Christmas puddings, Christmas parties and Christmas gifts under the Christmas tree. All are exciting and amusing(有趣的), but above all these, we are deeply touched by the hospitality(好客)of the family, Roger and Anne Marie.
Anne Marie was a nurse and all these days, she had been busy cooking meals, washing dishes and showing us around. Roger, who was a doctor, knows a lot about China and still wants to know more. He plays us Chinese music and it seems to me he does better in that than we do. In the evenings, we all sit around the fireplace with Tim, a lovely dog, by our side. Like long-time-no-see friends, we talk about all the things that have happened or we hope to happen in our lives. There is always so much to tell and to know.
After three months away from home, we are again feeling how sweet a home can be. Roger and Anne Marrie are not like most of the other people we have met who always make us feel we are foreigners in a foreign country. They show such kindness to us that they bring us a person-to-person feeling, instead of a British-to-Chinese feeling. They make us believe that though there are differences of languages and cultures, one may always expect to find in every corner of the world the feeling of love and being loved.
How I wish Mum and Dad could meet them! How I wish you were here with me! How strange it is that the more I feel at home here, the more I miss my real home and all of you. We always talk about “when we go back home next year…” and soon we will turn this into “When we go back home THIS year…” for the New Year's Day is coming. Miss you.
