6.A study finds that youngsters who have a sister are happier.
Why?The usual answer-that girls and women are more likely than boys and men to talk about emotions-is somehow unsatisfying,especially to a researcher like me.Much of my work over the years has developed the assumption that women's styles of friendship and conversation aren't letter than men's.
A man once told me that he had spent a day with a friend who was newly divorced.When he returned home,his wife asked how his friend was going.He replied,"I don't know.We didn't talk about it."His wife blamed him.
This made the man feel bad.So he was relieved to read in my hook that doing things together can be a comfort in itself,another way to show caring.
But if talking about problems isn't necessary for comfort,then having sisters shouldn't make men happier than having brothers.Yet the recent study is supported by others.
Scientists Liz Wright and Tony Cassidy found that young people who had grown up with at least one sister tended to be happier and more optimistic,especially if their parents had divorced.Researcher Judy Dunn,found a similar pattern among older adults.
I interviewed about 100 women about their sisters,but if they also had brothers,I asked them to compare.Most said they talked to their sisters more often,at greater length and about more personal topics.This often meant that they felt closer to their sisters.
It's true that having a sister makes one happier,but it needn't be talks about emotions.When women told me they talk to their sisters more often,at greater length and about more personal topics,I believe it's the first element that is the most important rather than the rest.

25.Why did the wife blame her husband in Paragraph 3?C
A.Because he laughed at his divorced friend.
B.Because he stayed with his friend for too long.
C.Because she didn't think he had shown care to his friend.
D.Because she didn't like her husband's contact with his friend.
26.What can we learn from the sixth paragraph?
A.Even an older adult can be happier if he has a sister.A
B.Women's styles of conversation are better than men's.
C.Talking isn't the only factor that makes people happier.
D.Talking about problems is the best way to show care for others.
27.As for talks between sisters.what is the most important in the writer's opinion?B
A.The content.
B.The frequency.
C.The topic.
D.The length.
28.What would be the best title for the passage?A

17.At least once each winter I manage to get a good flight in the middle of a snowstorm.Last Sunday was that flight. My gliding(滑翔的)partners had looked at the weather reports of showers and decided to stay at home.People say that you shouldn't fly by yourself, but on that day I felt the urge to go flying and so headed for my favorite gliding site.
I had the mountain ridge to myself. After a smooth lift-off,I floated stably in the breeze, feeling at peace with myself and the world.I looked across the valley to Bedford and a moment later saw the town disappear in a band of snow that was moving towards me.
The breeze remained strong enough for flying and I knew that as long as the visibility was good,it was OK for me to stay in the air.The snow moved in and swirled around me.It was a light dry snow. The day was already very quiet but, somehow, the light snow made it even more silent.I felt like a snowflake.
Two bald eagles joined me.They didn't pay me any attention and spent a few minutes flying around the ridge before disappearing.I flew through another band of snow.I had been flying for about 45 minutes when I next looked across the valley.I could see there were more bands of snow to come and the breeze was dying too.

14.When you enjoy a speech or a performance, you probably feel like clapping to show your admiration. But what if you were forbidden to do it?
In July,Elanora Heights Public School, which is on Sydney's northern beaches, did just this, banning students from clapping out of respect for school community members who are sensitive to noise. When students attend an assembly, teachers will tell the audience to conduct a silent cheer if needed.Instead of clapping, the students are free to punch the air, pull excited faces and twist their body on the spot. The rule was introduced to respect a teacher with a hearing condition that causes sensitivity to noise.Teachers have also found the silent cheers to be a great way to consume children's abundant energy.
GQ.com editor Lauran Larson wrote that this ban comes after a major push in Australia towards political correctness in schools.Elanora Heights Public School's ban on clapping in favor of silent cheering comes after several schools which have banned hugging. In April, hugging was banned at a Geelong primary school and children were told to find other ways to show affection. The schools has banned hugging, singing Christmas carols, celebrating Australia Day and singing the word"black"in the nursery rhyme"baa baa black sheep".In July, teachers at t he Cheltenham Girls High School in northwest Sydney were reported to have been banned from calling students"girls","ladies"or"women".
Political correctness is defined by Merriam-Webster as"agreeing with the idea that people should be careful to not use language or behave in a way that could offend a particular group of people".The goal of political correctness is to respect every group in society.
The debate around political correctness has been going on for many years."What I think the political correctness debate is really about the power to be able to define. The definers want the power to name. And the defined are now taking that power away from them."said Toni Morrison,a famous US novelist and editor.
Fortunately, this story was finally adjusted on 22 July to clarify that the policy was brought in because of a teacher's condition and applied to gatherings only.Despite the good ideas behind the ban on clapping,it may make school less fun for the kids."If we silence kids now,the quiet air punching will grow until the fists of their rage beat us all."said Larson.

11.Something's happening at the lowest point on our planet, some 1,388 feet below sea level.
The Dead Sea,a salt lake close to Israel,Jordan and the West Bank,is shrinking at an alarming rate-about 3.3 feet per year, according to the environmentalist group EcoPeace Middle East. And human actions are largely to blame.
"It's not just like one country is punishing the Dead Sea;it's more like the whole region,"said photographer Moritz Küstner, who visited the area in February to work on his series"The Dying Dead".
The Dead Sea needs water from the other natural sources surrounding it,such as the Jordan River basin. But around the 1960s,some of the water sources it relied upon were diverted.
Mineral extraction industries are another main reason why the water levels are declining, experts say.The Dead Sea's minerals have been popular for their medical power and can often be found in cosmetics(化妝品)and other consumer products.
And then,of course, there's the Middle East's hot,dry climate, which makes it difficult for the lake to refill itself.
Last year,Israel and Jordan signed a $900 million deal in an effort to stabilize the Dead Sea's water levels.
It involves building a canal from the Red Sea to the Dead Sea so that both countries would be able to not only supply water to Israel and Jordan but also to pump much needed water-some 300 million cubic meters annually-into the Dead Sea.
"This is the most important and significant agreement since the peace treaty with Jordan (in 1994),"said Silvan Shalom,Israel's energy and water resources minister at the time.
Whether the canal-estimated to take three years to complete-will work out positively and as planned remains to be seen.

32.Moritz Küstner visited the Dead Sea toC.
A.shoot TV series about people's action there
B.make a survey about the sea level
C.do his photographic series work

33.Which of the following statements is NOT the reason for the water levels'declining?D
A.The other natural sources the Dead Sea relied on were switched.
B.The Dead Sea's minerals have been dug and used in some products.
C.The Middle East's climate makes the lake itself difficult to store water.
D.Israel and Jordan are the two countries to destroy the Dead Sea.
34.What measure has been taken to save the Dead Sea?A
A.Bringing in water from the Red Sea.
B.Introducing water from Israel and Jordan.
C.Taking Israel's energy and water resources.
D.Struggling for international support.
35.What does the passage mainly tells us?A
A.Why the Dead Sea is dying and the measure taken to save it.
B.How important the Dead Sea is in Israel,Jordan and the West Bank.
C.How to solve the problem that the Dead Sea is being destroyed.
D.Protecting the environment is in no hurry all over the world.

18.The fight is on to get rid of air pollution in our cities.While the best solution in the long-term would be to ban fossil-fueled cars,that won't help the millions who are dying in the meantime,and so some high-tech solutions are now on the cards.
In March 2016,10 London pigeons became famous.These pigeons took to the sky from Primrose Hill in north London,wearing backpacks monitoring air pollution.Once in the air,the backpacks sent live air-quality updates to the smartphones of the Londoners below.
The pigeons and their backpacks were just the latest in a series of increasingly desperate attempts to monitor and control air pollution.London's air pollution problem has been getting worse for years,and it often rises to more than three times the European Union's legal limit.
Another promising approach can be found in Beijing,after China declared a"war against pollution"in 2014.A seven-metre-high"Smog Free Tower",designed by a Dutch scientist,Daan Roosegaarde,opened in Beijing's 751D Park in September 2016.
It is a huge,outdoor air purifier.Airborne particles(顆粒)are sucked into the tower where they receive a positive charge.The particles are then caught by a negatively charged dust-removal plate and clean air is blown out of the other end."Changing smog particles does not take much current."Roosegaarde said.
As for what to do with the collected PM waste,he has currently set up a business making jewellery out of the waste.Prince Charles owns a set of"smog free"cufflinks (袖扣).If collected on at a big scale,Roosegaarde believes it could even be used as a building material.
Mexico City has an alternative solution.Looking to Nature to maximize the surface area of a building,Allison Dring,a Berlin-based architect,managed to catch light and wind from all sides.She is now making a building material by burning agricultural crop by-products in the absence of oxygen."It means that you are actually taking carbon(碳) out of the sky,transforming it into a material,and then using it to build,"says Dring.
The fight against outdoor air pollution is really just starting.Even if none of the ideas take off,at least Prince Charles'cufflinks,the special building surface and pigeons wearing back-packs will have brought the issue more to the public's attention.

29.The 10 pigeons in London were used toA.
A.monitor air pollution
B.warn Londoners
C.update weather forecast
D.promote backpacks
30.What can we learn about the Smog Free Tower?B
A.Its power consumption is high.
B.PM waste from it can be reused.
C.It is built of agricultural by-products.
D.It can attract light and wind from all sides.
31.What's the best title for the passage?C
A.When can humans get rid of smog?
B.Why is technology used to fight smog?
C.How are the world's cities fighting smog?
D.What makes smog a worldwide problem?
