In 1905, as part of his Special Theory of Relativity, Albert Einstein published the point that a large amount of energy could be released from a small amount of matter. This was expressed by equation E = me 2(energy = mass times the speed of light squared). But bombs were not what Einstein had in mind when he published this equation.
In 1929, he publicly declared that if a war broke out he would “refused to do war service, direct or indirect…” His position would change in 1933, as the result of Adolf Hitler’s coming into power in Germany.
Einstein’s greatest role in the invention of the atomic bomb was signing a letter to President Franklin Roosevelt urging that the bomb be built because some physicists feared that Germany might be working on an atomic bomb. Among those concerned were physicists Leo Szilard and Eugene Wigner. But Szilard and Wigner had no influence with those in power. So in July 1939 they explained the problem to someone who did: Albert Einstein. After talking with Einstein, in August 1939 Szilard wrote a letter to President Roosevelt with Einstein’s signature on it, which was delivered to Roosevelt in October 1939.
Germany has invaded Poland the previous month; the time was ripe for action. That October research of a-bomb began but proceeded slowly because the invention of the atomic bomb seemed distant and unlikely. In April 1940 an Einstein letter, ghost-written by Szilard, pressed the researchers on the need for “greater speed”.
As the realization of nuclear weapons grew near, Einstein looked beyond the current war to future problems that such weapons could bring. He wrote to his friend about his fear about the future use of the a-bomb.
The atomic bombings of Japan occurred three months after Germany gave in.
In November 1954, five months before his death, Einstein summarized his feelings about his role in the creation of the atomic bomb: “I made one great mistake in my life… when I signed a letter to President Roosevelt recommending that atom bombs be made; but there was some justification---- the danger that the Germans would make them”.
1.What can we learn about Szilard and Wigner?
A. They were not as influential as Einstein.
B. They were responsible for the invention of nuclear weapons
C. They had cheated their friend Albert Einstein.
D. They had an intention to destroy the world.
2. Einstein realized his mistake of ___________.
A. co-operating with his workmates
B. inventing the atomic bomb
C. publishing his equation
D. signing the letter to President Roosevelt
3. We can conclude that Einstein ___________.
A. was important in the development of atomic bomb
B. was not involved in the invention of atomic bomb
C. directly participated in the invention of the atomic bomb
D. helped with the invention of atomic bomb
4. Why did Einstein suggest making atom bombs?
A. Because President Roosevelt asked to do so.
B. Because it was likely that Hitler would make them.
C. Because it was not in favor of President Roosevelt.
D. Because it was not necessary to do so.
5.The best title for the passage would be __________.
A. A Story of Albert Einstein
B. Albert Einstein and the Atomic Bomb
C. It was Unfair for Einstein
D. How the Atomic Bomb was Invented

When I was a baby, I entertained you and made you laugh. Whenever I was “bad”, you'd shake your finger at me and ask, “How could you?"---but then you'd give up, and roll me over for a belly scratch and I believed that life could not be any more perfect.
Gradually, you began spending more time at work and on your career, and more time searching for a human mate. Eventually, you fell in love. She, now your wife, is not a dog person, but I still welcomed her into our home. I was happy because you were happy. Then the human babies came along and I shared your excitement, I was fascinated by their pinkness, how they smelled, and I wanted to mother them too. Your wife was afraid I would bite them. But nevertheless, as they began to grow, I became their friend.
Now, you have a new job in another city and you and they will be moving to an apartment that does not allow pets. You've made the right decision for your “family”, but there was a time when I was your only family.
I was excited about the car ride until we arrived at the dog pound. It smelled of dogs and cats, of fear, of hopelessness. You filled out the paperwork and said, “I know you will find a good home for her.” They shrugged and gave you a pained look. The children were in tears as they waved me goodbye. And “How could you?” were the only three words that swept over my mind.
Is it better to live with hope or without hope? At first, whenever anyone passed my pen (圍欄), I rushed to the front, hoping it was you, that you had changed your mind and that this was all a bad dream.
My beloved master, I will think of you and wait for you forever. I hope you receive more faithfulness from your family than you showed to me.

3.The underlined sentence in Paragraph 4 shows that ________.
A. the dog had done many bad things
B. the dog would be given less care
C. the master's decision upset the dog
D. the master left the dog with regret
4.What can we learn about the dog from the text?
A. Be ready for changes.
B. Be content with the present.
C. Be tolerant of others' choice.
D. Be faithful to sincere feelings.

“Community” is not a concept that is easy to define(定義). In this essay I will examine what turns individuals into a community, and discuss some different types. I will also look at what all communities have in common, the benefits they offer and draw conclusions about their increasing importance.
The word “community” may make you think of traditional communities in the developing world, where large families live together. We may also imagine the neighbours as people who are happy to help out whenever it is needed. The stereotypical(老套的) view is that of a village, where people have little but can feel very rich because everyone takes responsibility for the welfare of the others.
On the other hand, there are other types of communities: ultramodern(超現(xiàn)代的) ones, where the community members are unlikely to have actually met each other. These are online communities, where people blog or chat about particular issues that are important to them. They come across others on websites and may develop a relationship there with like-minded people, discussing the same topics. The view is often that these are artificial connections between people who are, in fact, still isolated(孤立的) strangers.
In reality, the connections are real. Moreover, there are many types of communities in between these extremes: people who join clubs, who sign up with voluntary, political or other organizations, or who take part in group discussions in their local area. They may be campaigning about issues or simply getting together for companionship and support.
Human beings are social by nature, so it should not be a surprise that we organize ourselves in groups. However, there is more going on: these groups provide something that we cannot achieve on our own. The main benefit of being part of a larger group is strength in numbers. For example, we can access and share more information, we can take part in team sports, we can complain and campaign more effectively and even if we are just having a chat, online or in person, we can feel supported in whatever we do.
Whatever forms communities take, what defines them is the sense of identity and safety that they provide for their members: the knowledge that there are people who we have something in common with and who can be relied on when we need each other.
1.In traditional communities, people ______.
A. live in a large family
B. are wealthy but unhappy
C. are isolated and don’t have connections
D. help and care about each other
2.According to the text, online community members ______.
A. develop a close working relationship
B. share opinions about issues on websites
C. communicate with each other in person
D. share the same interest but have no relations
3.Paragraph 5 mainly talks about ______.
A. the types of community
B. the culture of community
C. the benefits of community
D. the definition of community
4.Communities provide their members with ______.
A. a sense of identity and safety
B. a sense of social responsibility
C. chances of meeting new people
