The next day,I waited anxiously when Miss Turner started to call out  .When she reached group three,Tina was called.   ,my name was not included.“There must have been some   !"I thought to myself.
Than I heard    .The last group with Mauro and Karina! How   ! How could I face being in that group—the boy who hardly spoke English and the girl who wore   clothes a11 the time?
I went to Miss Turner to   I should be in a “good” group. She gently placed a hand on my shoulder.“I know what you want,Rachael,”she said, but your group you more.Only you can help them get an ideal      .Will you help them?"
I   walked to where the others in my group sat. Halfway through the week, I     myself enjoying working with my partners. There was no need to     —I grew sincerely interested in learning something about then. Mauro, I found out, was   with English after he came to this country. Frank laughed as he tried to tear at the wrapping paper on his birthday present. He was so     ! Finally, he would have the coolest pair of name-brand basketball shoes.
All the guys on his team were wearing the name-brand shoes of a popular basketball   _, Chuck Hart. While Hart was   for his poor sportsmanship and infamous   , he was a great player. In fact, Frank wasn't thinking about Hart’s behavior; he had only expected to see Hart’s      on the side of the box. They were the wrong shoes and Frank would be      by the other players. When he looked up into his dad’s eyes, however, Frank decided he     not tell him. “Thanks, Dad. I was really hoping for shoes,” Frank said as he pulled the shoes out of the box.
The next morning his dad drove him to school. When they      in front of his destination, Frank slowly opened the car door. Just then, his dad stopped him.
“Hey, Frank, wait a minute, look…” his dad said      ,“Frank, I know those aren’t the shoes you had hoped for, but I saw the names of the two guys and made a(n)     . The guy whose name is on those shoes,” he said, pointing down at Frank’s feet, “is someone I      . Do you know how often Ryann has found himself in     ?”
“No,” Frank said.
“Never. He’s never talked back to his coach or started a fight, and he’s a team player. When the swim season began, my 11-year-old daughter, Elizabeth, and I cut a deal. She would go to practice three times a week and try really hard, and I wouldn’t make her compete in the swim meets because on the day of a meet, she would be nervous all day. Her nerves rooted from the possibility that she would do something horribly wrong and let everyone down.
Recently, they had a T-shirt relay, which works like this: one person from each relay team puts on a T-shirt and a pair of socks, swims 50 meters, and gets out of the pool. She takes off the clothes and puts them on the next person, who then swims 50 meters. This continues until everyone on the team has completed a lap.
By the last leg, Elizabeth’s team had built up a moderate lead. Then it was Elizabeth’s turn to swim. She seemed to swim faster in the T-shirt and socks than when she wasn’t wearing them.
Approaching the halfway mark, she was still in the lead. Then one of Elizabeth’s socks fell off and was floating in the pool. “She has to get that sock on before the end of the race,” a swimming official told her team, “or you will be disqualified.”
Everybody on her team started screaming, “Elizabeth! Elizabeth! Stop! Get the sock!” But she couldn’t hear them. As she started her last 25 meters, a girl in Lane 2 was gaining on Elizabeth. It was time for desperate measures. A girl on my daughter’s team jumped in the pool, grabbed the sock, and swam after Elizabeth. She grabbed Elizabeth’s foot. “You have to put the sock on,” the girl screamed. Elizabeth continued swimming while her teammate put on the sock.
By now, the girl in Lane 2 was about to pass Elizabeth. With the sock finally on, Elizabeth swam her heart out for the last 15 meters. It was close, but Elizabeth beat the other girl to the wall for the victory.
On the ride home, she relived her moment of glory again and again. She told me that if the T-shirt relay was an Olympic event, her team would win the gold medal. I told her that in my professional opinion, she was absolutely right.

A.swim faster in the T-shirt
B.enjoy swim meets later on

The opening scene of The King’s Speech was, in a word, terrifying. The moment King George VI—wonderfully played by Colin Firth—stepped up to the microphone at Wembley Stadium, a rush of nervousness came over me. It took me back to my school days, standing at my desk, having to read aloud to the class. I whispered to my wife, Jill, “A stutterer(口吃者) wrote this screenplay(劇本).
I grew up with a stutter, really afraid of trying to get through simple sentences—knowing that I would then, or later, be laughed at. I still remember the reading when I was in 7th grade at St. Helena’s: “Sir Walter Raleigh was a gentlemen…” I remember reciting, “Sir Walter Raleigh was a gentlemen.” The school teacher said, “Master B-B-B-Biden! What’s that word?” She wanted me to say gentlemen. But by then, I had learned to put my sentences into bite-size pieces and I was reading it: “gentle”|breath|“man”.
Ninety-nine percent of the time, the teachers were great. I never had professional treatment but a couple of teachers taught me to put a regular rise and fall in my tone of speaking, and that’s why I spent so much time reading poetry. But even in my small, boys’ prep school, I got nailed in my class with the nickname Joe Stutterer. You get so desperate, you’re so embarrassed. I actually went and stood by the side of my house once, with a small round stone in my mouth, and tried to talk. Jill always thought I was kidding until she saw the movie and saw King George did the same thing.
King George relied on the support his wife and the help of Lionel Longue, who, in describing working with other stutterers, said, “My job was to give them confidence in their voices and let them know that a friend was listening.” I was lucky enough to have more than a couple of Lionels in my life. Nobody in my family ever—ever—made fun of me or tried to finish my sentences. My mother would say, “Joey, you cannot let stuttering define you.” And because of her and others, I made sure it didn’t.
Through hard work and determination, I beat my stutter in high school. I even spoke briefly at my graduation ceremony in 1961—the most difficult speech of my life. My fight against shyness and embarrassment at my early age has developed my ability to understand others’ feelings as Vice President of the country in public life. I still mark up all of my speeches the say way Firth’s character does in the movie, pencil-marking every line to remind myself to stop, to breathe, to pause—to beat back my stuttering as best as I can. I don’t stutter anymore, and most people who know me only late in my life are shocked that I ever did.
By capturing exactly how a stutter feels, The King’s Speech has shown millions of people how much courage it takes for a stutterer to stand up and speak. Equally important, it has shown millions who suffer from the pain that it can be overcome, we are not alone, and with the support of those around us, our deepest fears can be conquered.
小題1:The writer whispered to his wife, “A stutterer wrote this screenplay”, because __________.
A.he desired to release his secret to his wife
B.he was reminded how it was as a stutterer on such occasions
C.he thought Colin Firth had a wonderful performance in the film
D.he wanted to make his wife realize why the film was so popular
小題2:What does the underlined sentence in Paragraph 4 imply?
A.The writer would have a good fortune to get help from many people.
B.The writer should realize he had to stand up from his pain and defeat it
C.The writer could get enough confidence under his mother’s help
D.The writer must be happy that everyone in his family did not laugh at him.
小題3:What message is conveyed in the passage?
A.Whatever pain and fear we have, we can defeat them if we try hard.
B.The similar stories of the writer and King George VI gains great admiration.
C.The suffer we had at our early age will have a heavy influence on our future life.
D.Stuttering is such a pain for children that we should give help and encourage them.

The other day I was talking to a stranger on the bus; he told me that he had a good     in Chicago and he wondered if, by any chance, I    to know him. For a moment, I thought he might be   , but I could tell from the expression on his face that he was not. He was     . I felt that it was ridiculous (可笑的) to      that I could possibly have ever met with his friend out of millions of people in Chicago. But,     , I just smiled and reminded(提醒) him that Chicago was a very      city. He nodded, and I thought he was going to be glad to drop the topic and talk about something else. But I was wrong. He was silent for a few minutes, and then he       to tell me all about his friend.
His friend’s main       in life seemed to be tennis. He was an excellent tennis player, and he      had his own tennis court(網(wǎng)球場). There were a lot of people with swimming     , yet there were only two people with private (私人的)tennis court; his friend in Chicago was one of them. I told him that I knew several   like that, including my brother, who was doctor in California. He       that maybe there were more private courts in the country than he     but he did not know of any others. Then he asked me    my brother lived in California. When I said Sacramento, he said that was a coincidence (巧合)    _ his Chicago friend also spent the summer in Sacramento last year and he lived next door to a      who had a tennis court in his backyard. I said I felt that really was a coincidence because my next-door neighbour had gone to Sacramento last summer and had     __ the house next to my brother’s house. For a moment, we stared at each other, but we did not say anything.
“Would your friend’s name happen to be Roland Kirkwood?” I asked finally. He      and said, “Yes. Would your brother’s name happen to be Dr Rey Hunter?” It was my       to laugh. “Yes,” I replied.

When we got into the      to go home, his father suddenly appeared.      , he began to wash his son’s windscreen. I could feel he was a caring man through the glass.

It's a name that needs no address.Everyone knows Santa Claus lives at the North Pole.
So letters sent to Santa Claus find their way to the small town of the North Pole deep in Alaska, including those simply sent to Santa. Last year,120,000 letters arrived from 26 countries, not including the thousands with no return addresses.

Those who have return addresses usually get a reply and a North Pole postmark(郵戳) that has delighted children all over the world for many years. They feel happy to receive Santa's reply.
Letters arrive all the year around in the town of 1,600,where streets have names such as Santa Claus Lane and Kris Kringle Drive. Around Thanksgiving, they start getting there by the thousands each day as Christmas comes. Even letters without stamps get through,an exception(例外)for the U.S. Postal Service.
“This is special because it has Santa's name on it,”said Debra Cornelius,an officer at the main post office in nearby Fairbanks, where the letters are kept during the holiday.
Gabby Gaborik is among several dozen volunteers who are busy sending off replies to children who sent return addresses.
In his 10 years as a volunteer,Gaborik has seen every kind of wish. There are children who want the latest toys they see on TV. There are children who ask for miracles(奇跡),some wanting their mother back for Christmas or their father back from Iraq, even though he died there.
Replies get a North Pole postmark, including a halfmoon drawing of Santa's face. Even late letters get a reply,Gaborik said,“It says something like ‘Thanks for writing. Santa's been really busy,’anything the children might want to hear,”he said.
