The sound of the rain hitting the windows wakes me up and it sounds just exactly as it did 15 years ago, which reminded me of my girlhood.

It was my second day of school and it was raining heavily. I could not resist the habit I had at home, so I fell asleep right at my desk. I woke up to find myself not in the classroom but carried on Dad’s back. We were halfway home. It was the last time I felt close to him.

After that, he never carried me or hugged me as other fathers did to their children. I was not bothered much by this thought. I was proud of it, for I felt independent and “grown up.” However, there were times when I felt depressed by not having sought comfort from him.

One day, I was writing Chinese characters as homework. I hated doing this more than anything. Dad came and stood behind me for a moment, watching me scratching the paper. Then he said, “This kind of writing needs patience. Your writing is not strong enough. Press harder.”

I follow his advice for the next two words, but as I could see little improvement, I followed my own method----the fast way. His advice did not improve my writing but our relationship. As I grew older, I found out that he had finished his schooling in Grade 6, which was the highest grade in the town then, so he was considered to be a scholar. People used to ask him to write something to put on the walls, but he never felt very useful.

He often said to me, “As you can see, this family is going to count on you. We are useless to improve you anything for your future. You have to get an education to change the life for yourself.” As a result of his expectation, I have made it through high school and through college.

A. She found her father never carried her.

B. Her father never hugged her as other fathers did to their children.

C. She was bothered much by the thought that her father never cared her.

D. She never sought comfort from her father.

3.We can infer from the passage that the author’s father______.

A. is helpful to improving the author for her future.

B. attaches great importance to education.

C. pushes the author tightly.

D. received little education.

4.What was the author’s purpose in writing this passage?

A. to introduce her father.

We all have fond memories of taking a few lazy months off after the stress of A-levels. So now that summer has arrived, let’s take full advantage. It goes without saying that summer vacations are the perfect time to go traveling.

Tickets go up greatly when you turn 26, so make the most of cheaper rates while you’re eligible.

Overseas volunteering won’t amaze future employers, but it can be very useful. Finding a reliable (可靠的) company that won’t cheat you is important, as is discovering a program that interests you. There are plenty of websites where you can see other people’s suggestions.

Of course for most of us, money is tight. To avoid overspending you can combine employment and vacation. Hannah Warn, a psychology (心理學) student at the University of Winchester, is spending her summer at Camp America where students enjoy a good time on a summer camp. “Being thrown into something where I don’t really know what to expect is exciting,” she says. “It gives me a chance to experience being away from home in a different way.”

Those with a talent for languages might also consider working abroad as an au pair (互惠工人). The work may be a chance to involve yourself in a new culture while your employer pays most of the bill.

If you have an idea of the sort of career you’d like, getting work experience is wise. In many careers, graduating with only your degree to show for your three or four years just won’t make it. Send applications (申請) off early and to as many places as possible. Make sure you take a well-earned break this summer.

1.It can be inferred from the passage that .

A. students who quit school will pay more for travel

B. students may enjoy lower-price tickets when traveling

C. students should have a longer summer vacation than ever

2.The underlined part “you’re eligible” in Para. 2 can best be replaced by “ ”.

A. you have more free time B. you’re tired of school life

C. you enjoy traveling a lot D. you’re of the right age

3.Which of the following is TRUE according to the example of Hannah Warn?

A. Camp America offers jobs to students.

B. Psychology students are good at saving money.

C. Students had better choose a camp related to their future job.

D. A camp is a good place to combine employment and vacation.

4. According to the passage, who is more likely to get a job after graduation?

A. John, who got excellent academic records during his university years.

B. Lily, who worked abroad as an au pair during summer vacations.

C. Tom, who got working experience related to his future job in college.

D. Mary, who got a degree after studying four years in a famous university.

I was raised on a farm in the Fraser Valley along with five sisters and one brother. When I was 15, I got addicted to drinking at weekends and then dropped out of school. By the time I was 17, I continued to drink heavily. I couldn't find a job to support myself. So, I had no other choice but to join the army. I retired and went back home three years later, still a heavy drinker. When I was 22, I met Sue whose father was also a heavy drinker, so my behavior didn't surprise her. We were soon married and later had two daughters.

I started my first business when I was in my mid-twenties. A few years later, I bought a large chicken farm. Even with this success, though, my drinking was always a problem. It affected my marriage and family so much that I knew I had to make up my mind to stop drinking. So I tried great efforts. But two years later, I began drinking again.

When I was in my mid-thirties, I sold both of my businesses, and bought the big house on the hill. I was not at all happy, although I had everything that was supposed to make me happy. I sold our big house on the hill and bought a large land, where I built a new house. Our marriage was in big trouble, and my finances would go down the drain. For the first time in many years, I had to go to work for someone as an employee. I took a job as a heavy equipment operator in a road building camp.

My marriage still came apart when I was 38, and my kids had to go through our divorce. I spent 6 months in giving up drinking on a school camp. Nearly a year later, I met my childhood neighbor girl, June. We were married not long afterwards. My kids learned to trust me again and I have two stepchildren that also love me.

Happy life continued about ten years. Everything was going so well when I felt there was something wrong with my body. I went to see a doctor, and the medical examination came out that I had ALS(肌肉萎縮癥). Record shows that people with ALS generally survive between two to five years after symptoms appear. I've probably had the symptoms for one-and-a-half years already, so I don't know how much time I have left.…God knows…

B. He ended his army life at the age of 19.

C. He was not happy, although he lived in the big house at the age of 35.

D. He bought the big house on the hill when he was 25.

4.What can we infer about the author’s marriage?

B. His finance was the first thing that led to the failure of his first marriage.
