Question: Which program is in Guinness World Records as the world’s longest running TV quiz show? Answer: “It’s Academic.”
“It’s Academic” is a Saturday morning program for high school students. The show has been broadcast in the Washington area for fifty years. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton competed on the show when she was a teenager. Teams from local schools are questioned about subjects like history, literature, math, science, religion, politics and sports.
Sophie was a TV producer in the 1950s. She started “It’s Academic” after local school officials asked her to create a program that showed outstanding students.
The show’s host, 84-year-old Mac McGarry, who has hosted “It’s Academic” since the beginning, says, “When we first started, the young people from various countries were not evident so much. Now, each program presents young people from all over the world, at least descendants (后裔) from people all over the world.”
Mac McGarry said, “Every time I look up, I see people who are just seventeen years old. And I think, ‘Well, I must not be growing older at all. They are full of enthusiasm. I really have to become more active to keep up with them.’” More than 20,000 students have appeared on the show. Mac McGarry has asked more than 200,000 questions and gotten more than a few funny answers.
Kelly Reeder led the team from Rockville High School in Maryland last year. Her school has won the championship on “It’s Academic” several times. She says, “We have put in a lot of effort over the years. It’s a really huge honor to end up on the A Team. My friends who are on ‘It’s Academic’ think it’s cool that I’m the captain of the A Team, but my friends who are not on ‘It’s Academic’ think it’s kind of funny.”

Huaining Middle School, locating in the north of Gaohe town, holds a sports meeting in every one May. We all looked forward to it, for it is a time for us students to reduce stress and it always brings us lots of unforgettable memories. It usually lasts for three days, during whose time we have no classes. All the students go to the playground to watch or joining in games. The part I like most is the relay race. With race going on, our excitement grows. All of them yell out "come on" to the athletes, watching them competing aggressive. The most breathtaking moment is that the athletes are getting to the finishing line. Somebody can tell who is the winner until the last minute.

We Chat, the Chinese social media smartphone app, saw an increase in user numbers of 41 per cent year on year to 500m at the end of 2014, in a sign that parent company Tencent is extending(拓展) its reach for the mobile internet. Revenue grew 24 per cent to Rmb20.98billion, slightly higher than forecasts, driven mainly by online gaming revenues.
It is unclear how much WeChat contributed to Tencent’s revenues but the app’s growth is a strong indicator of the company’s long-term health as it tries to adjust its business to be more suitable for mobile devices.
“We extended our leadership in games and online media, and made breakthroughs in emerging platforms such as online security?.?.?.?and mobile payments,” Ma Huateng, Tencent chairman, said in a statement.

Tencent has been unwilling to earn money through WeChat by flooding it with advertising, which could reduce efforts to increase the user base. But this is expected to change. Some analysts predicted that advertising would be introduced on later this year. Early attempts to test ads on the service have not always gone smoothly. After a BMW ad was introduced on some users’ feeds in January, many users complained of “discrimination” by Tencent’s data mining algorithm. On a hot summer day in America a little boy decided to go for a swim in the old swimming hole behind his house. He dived into the cool water, not realizing that as he swam towards the middle of the lake, a crocodile (鱷魚) was swimming toward him.
His mother in the house was looking out of the window and saw the two as they got closer and closer. In great fear, she ran toward the water, shouting to her son as loudly as she could. Hearing her voice, the little boy became alarmed and made a U-turn to swim to his mother. It was too late. Just as he reached her, the crocodile reached him. From the shore, the mother grabbed her little boy by the arms just as the crocodile snatched his legs. That began an incredible tug-of-war (拔河) between the two. The crocodile was much stronger than the mother, but the mother was much too passionate to let go. A farmer happened to drive by, heard their screams, raced from his truck, took aim and shot the crocodile.
Remarkably, after weeks and weeks in the hospital, the little boy survived. His legs were extremely scarred by the attack of the animal. And, on his arms, were deep scratches where his mother's fingernails dug into his flesh in her effort to hang on to the son she loved.
The newspaper reporter, who interviewed the boy, asked if he would show him his scars. The boy lifted his legs. And then, with obvious pride, he said to the reporter, “But look at my arms. I have great scars on my arms, too. I have them because my Mom wouldn’t let go.”
Never judge another person's scars, because you don't know how they were made.
1.Which of the following is most related to the underlined word “passionate”?
A. Anxious. B. Determined.
C. Frightened. D. Courageous.
2.By saying “But look at my arms. I have great scars on my arms, too” in the fourth paragraph, the boy really wants to show__________.
A. how many scars and scratches he had
B. how deep the scars made by the crocodile were
C. how great and beloved his mother was
D. what a brave and courageous boy he was
3.In the story the writer intends to tell us that __________.
A. scars always remind people of their past experiences
B. it’s dangerous to swim alone in the water
C. the boy also feels painful in his mind
D. scars do not necessarily mean pain at all times
4.Which of the following will be the best title for the text?
A. A Terrible Experience
B. Women Hold up Half the Sky
C. Scars of Love
D. Don't Judge by Appearances
