Oprah Winfrey, born in 1954, is all American talk show host, best known for her multi-award-winning talk show. She is also, according to some assessments, the most influential woman in the world. It's no surprise that her endorsement(認(rèn)可)can bring overnight sales fortune that defeats most, if not all, marketing campaigns. The star features about 20 products each year On her “Favorite Things” show. There’s even a term for it: the Oprah Effect.
Her television career began unexpectedly. When she was 16 year old, she had the idea of being a journalist to tell other people’s stories in a way that made a difference in their lives and the world. She was on television by the time she was 19 years old. And in 1986 she started her own television show with a continuous determination to succeed at first.
TIME magazine wrote, “People would have doubted Oprah Winfrey’s swift rise to host of the most popular talk show on TV. In a field dominated by white males, she is a black female of big size. As interviewers go, she is no match for Phil Donahue. What she lacks in journalistic toughness, she makes up for in plainspoken curiosity, rich humor and, above all understanding. Guests with sad[stories to tell tend to bring out a tear in Oprah’s eye. They, in turn, often find themselves exposing things they would not imagine telling anyone, much less a national TV audience.”
“I was nervous about the competition and then I became my own competition raising the bar every year, pushing, pushing, pushing myself as hard as I knew. It doesn't matter how far you might rise. At some point you are bound to fall if you’re constantly doing what we do, raising the bar. If you're constantly pushing yourself higher, higher the law of averages, you will at some point fall. And when you do, I want you to know this, remember this: there is no such thing as failure. Failure is just life trying to move us in another direction” as Oprah addressed graduates at Harvard on May 30, 2013.

When us teenager Jake Olson isn’t playing football or golf for his high school, he’s often offering inspiration through his new book about his own life.
These activities might be too much for the average 16-year-old to deal with, but Jake is blind. When people ask him how he can possibly play golf without being able to see the ball, he says he is thankful for his father’s guidance.
It seems apparent that his early experience playing sports as a person with sight and muscle memory— repeating behaviors over and over until they become second nature — have also enabled Jake to hit the ball quite well.
Jake was born with a rare kind of eye cancer that took away the vision from his left eye when he was an infant  and eventually his right eye, in 2009, when he was 12 years old. Rather than letting the disease hold him back, Jake used his loss of sight and his faith as sources of motivation .
“If I was going to sit on the couch all day feeling sorry for myself, I wasn’t going to do anything. I decided right then and there that I wasn’t going to let it stop me and that I was going to go out and persevere (堅(jiān)持不懈),” he said.
It was with that mind-set that the student from Orange Lutheran High School in California was able to write his first book, Open Your Eyes: 10 Uncommon Lessons to Discover a Happier Life. “It’s about opening the readers’ eyes to their true potential in life and making sure that they use all the abilities that they have,” Jake said.
Jake’s father, Brian Olson, said the family is impressed with what he has done with his life, including showing people that they can get through hardships. “Your darkest hour can soon become your brightest, and with every setback, there’s a setup,” Jake said. “In every one of us, there’s more potential than we can ever imagine, and it really is a choice.”

“A” for Attitude
English was always my favorite subject. In my freshman year of high school, I could write a killer composition. In my second year, my teacher        me to give spelling tests to the class. I had a      time of my junior year. Mrs Alexander        me to sit at her desk and take over the class when she had to leave the room. Only my senior English class was       , as we had a teacher right out of college who expected       work. Every student received a "C" or "D" grade the first quarter. But English was still my favorite subject.
I graduated from high school,      early and had children.       about my English, I often helped my kids with their English homework. And I wrote long articles and beautiful poetry as a columnist for a newspaper. Fifteen years later, I went to college, and because I had been an "A" student, I remained an "A" student. I       up to my own expectations.
Yesterday, I        my high school report cards when I was reading old papers. That bundle of report cards        back the old days. I remembered sitting in my advisor's office, explaining that I had always be       at English, and recommending that I did not deserve a '"D" from that inexperienced teacher of my senior year. The advisor was        but unable to change a(an)     . Reading through my old report cards revealed something else too. I wanted to       them or hide them. I was not an "A" student in high school English! Somehow, I had         myself of this, when the grades clearly reflected an average student with an       "A" or "B" but mostly "C” S.
Had I lived up to those grades and       myself according to those letters, I would have never confidently sought my writing career. Had I       my early grades instead of myself, I would have allowed my fear of failure to       enthusiasm and damage my creativity. Instead, I       my younger self as an "A" English student, except for that undeserved "D".

When I was little, my mother sold flowers at Camden Market in London, She couldn't leave me at home on my own, so I had to go to the market with her. As I grew older, I began to give my mom a hand and I really enjoyed it.
Things changed when I was 14. My grandma gave me a book for Christmas, which was all about making candles . I loved it so much that I spent all my free time making candles of all shapes and sizes. I made hundreds of them.
One day, my mother was ill so I had to go to the market on my own. I decided to take some candles with me and see if I could sell them. To my surprise, they were sold out in 20 minutes! I arrived in the classroom, ready to share my knowledge and experience with 75 students who would be my English literature class.Having taught in the US for 17 years,I had no      about my ability to hold their attention and to  on them my admiration for the literature of my mother tongue.
I was shocked when the monitor shouted,“    !” The entire class rose as I entered the room, and I was somewhat      about how to get them to sit down again, but once that awkwardness (尷尬) was over,I quickly      calmness and began what I thought was a fact—packed lecture, sure to gain their respect—perhaps    their admiration.I went back to my office with the rosy glow which came from a(n)      of achievement.

I described the entire philosophical framework (哲學(xué)體系) of Western thought and laid the historical    for all the works we’ll study in class,” I complained.“How    they say I didn’t teach them anything?”
