【1】witnesswitnessed

【2】whilewhen

【3】去掉far

【4】badbadly

【5】traptrapped

【6】onin

【7】AsIt

【8】在eager后加to

【9】safesafety

【10】themthemselves

這里用的是sb. was doing sth. when...

on time意為“按時(shí)”;in time意為“及時(shí)”。

be eager to do意為“渴望做某事”。

A:be about to do…when…

B:was/were doing…when…

句型C:had done…when…

1.We were about to set out when it began to rain.

2.He had hardly sat down when his mobile rang.

3.I was walking along the bank of the river when I fell into it.

Have you ever run into a careless cell phone user on the street? Perhaps they were busy talking, texting or checking updates on WeChat without looking at what was going on around them. As the number of this new “species” of human has kept rising, they have been given a new name phubbers(低頭族).

Recently, a cartoon created by students from China Central Academy of Fine Arts put this group of people under the spotlight. In the short film, phubbers with various social identities bury themselves in their phones. A doctor plays with his cell phone while letting his patient die, a pretty woman takes selfie in front of a car accident site, and a father loses his child without knowing about it while using his mobile phone. A chain of similar events eventually leads to the destruction of the world.

Although the ending sounds overstated, the damage phubbing can bring is real.

Your health is the first to bear the effect and result of it. “Constantly bending your head to check your cell phone could damage your neck,” Guangming Daily quoted doctors as saying, “the neck is like a rope that breaks after long-term stretching.” Also, staring at cell phones for long periods of time will damage your eyesight gradually, according to the report.

But that’s not all. Being a phubber could also damage your social skills and drive you away from your friends and family. At reunions with family or friends, many people tend to stick to their cell phones while others are chatting happily with each other and this creates a strange atmosphere, Beijing Evening News reported.

It can also cost you your life. There have been lots of reports on phubbers who fell to their death, suffered accidents, and were robbed of their cell phones in broad daylight.

【1】For what purpose does the author give the example of a cartoon in Para. 2?

A. To advertise the cartoon made by students.

B. To inform people of the bad effects of phubbing.

C. To indicate the world will finally be destroyed by phubbers.

D. To warn doctors against using cell phones while treating patients.

【2】Which of the following is NOT a risk a phubber may have?

A. His social skills could be affected.

B. His neck and eyesight will be gradually harmed.

C. He might get separated from his friends and family.

D. He will cause the destruction of the world.

【3】Which of the following may be the author’s attitude towards phubbing?

A. Supportive.B. Optimistic.C. Opposed.D. Objective.

【4】What may the passage talk about next?

A. Measures to reduce the risks of phubbing.

B. People addicted to phubbing.

C. Definition of phubbing

D. Consequences of phubbing.

Private cars play a very important part in people’s life. They bring people convenience, joy or a new lifestyle. However, there are also problems to private cars. Firstly, with the rapidly increase of private cars, parking became a big headache. Another problem is the traffic. We often hear news of traffic jams, which accounts for many serious accidents. The worst thing is how the poisonous gases they give off polluting the air and do great harm to people’s healthy. I think we should use cars only when is necessary. For an example, instead of driving, we can walk, ride bicycles or take the bus to work.

If you look outside, you probably will see some kind of insect. If your first instinct is to kill it, take a moment to think about all of the benefits insects provide to the environment.

Entomologists, scientists who study insects, estimate that there are more than 800,000 species of insects found throughout the world. Only a few hundred of these insects are considered harmful. Mosquitoes, for example, are considered harmful. They bite humans and other animals, and their bites can cause skin pain and spread disease. Desert locusts also are considered harmful because they destroy crops causing billions of dollars in damage each year.

However, the number of helpful insect species far outweighs the number of harmful species. Some insects make up a vital part of the food chain. Many different birds, reptiles, fish and even plants eat insects. There are also about 500 insects that people in various parts of the world eat. These insects are considered delicious food and prized for their high protein, mineral, and vitamin content. Other insects produce valuable commercial products such as silk, wax, and honey.

Of all the insects, perhaps the most important are those that travel from flower to flower and pollinate(授粉) the plants they visit. Agriculture around the world would be very different without the bees, butterflies, moths, flies and wasps that pollinate many crops. In fact, nearly one-third of the food you eat depends on plants that are pollinated by insects!

While it is true that some species of insects harm or annoy us, you should not automatically reach for the bug spray when you come across an insect. You may be destroying one of the hundreds of thousands of insects that provides many benefits to human beings.

A. you should not keep insects as pets

B. you should not breed insects for their benefit

C. you should not catch insects for pleasure

D. you should not kill insects without thinking

【4】The main purpose of this passage is ________.

A. to explain why it is cruel to kill bugs

Dear Derrick ,

Although under great pressure, we all get on well with each other in this large office. You are one of the people who keep the social temperature at such a comfortable setting. I don’t know anyone in the office who is better liked than you .

You can perhaps help with this. The collection of contributions towards gifts for employees’ personal-life events is becoming a little troubling. Certainly, the group sending of a gift is reasonable now and then. In the past month, however, there have been collections for two baby shower gifts, one wedding shower gift, two weeding gifts, one funeral remembrance, four birthday gifts, and three graduation gifts .

It’s not only the collected-from who are growing uncomfortable(and poor), but the collected-for feel uneasy receiving gifts from people who don’t know them outside the office, who wouldn’t even recognize their graduating children, their marrying daughters and sons, or their dead relatives.

This is basically a kind gesture (and one that people think well of you for), but the practice seems to have become too wide-ranging and feels improper in today’s office setting .

Thank you for understanding .

1The underlined word “ contributions ” probably means _________ .

A. reports B. suggestions

C. understanding D. money

2Derrick is expected to _________.

A. show more kindness

B. discontinue the present practice

C. quit being the organizer for gift giving

D. know more about co-workers’ families

3This is basically a letter of _________.

A. apology B. dissatisfaction

C. appreciation D. sympathy

The elephant was lying heavily on its side, fast asleep. A few dogs started barking at it. The elephant woke up in a terrible anger: it chased the dogs into the village where they ran for safety.

That didn't stop the elephant. It destroyed a dozen houses and injured several people. The villagers were scared and angry. Then someone suggested calling Parbati, the elephant princess.

Parbati Barua's father was a hunter of tigers and an elephant tamer. He taught Parbati to ride an elephant before she could even walk. He also taught her the dangerous art of the elephant round-up -- how to catch wild elephants.

Parbati hasn't always lived in the jungle. After a happy childhood hunting with her father, she was sent to boarding school in the city. But Parbati never got used to being there and many years later she went back to her old fife. "Life in the city is too dull. Catching elephants is an adventure and the excitement lasts for days after the chase," she says.

But Parbati doesn't catch elephants just for fun. "My work," she says, "is to rescue man from the elephants, and to keep the elephants safe from man." And this is exactly what Parbati has been doing for many years. Increasingly, the Indian elephant is angry: for many years, illegal hunters have attacked it and its home in the jungle has been reduced to small pieces of land. It is now fighting back. Whenever wild elephants enter a tea garden or a village, Parbati is called to guide the animals back to the jungle before they can kill.

The work of an elephant tamer also involves love and devotion. A good elephant tamer will spend hours a day singing love songs to a newly captured elephant. "Eventually they grow to love their tamers and never forget them. They are also more loyal than humans," she said, as she climbed up one of her elephants and sat on the giant, happy animal. An elephant princess indeed!

1For Parbati, catching elephants is mainly to .

A. get long lasting excitement B. keep both man and elephants safe

C. send them back to the jungle D. make the angry elephants tame

2Before Parbati studied in a boarding school, .

A. she spent her time hunting with her father

B. she learned how to sing love songs

C. she had already been called an elephant princess

D. she was taught how to hunt tigers

3Indian elephants are getting increasingly angry and they revenge because________.

A. they are caught and sent for heavy work

B. illegal hunters capture them and kill them

C. they are attacked and their land gets limited

D. dogs often bark at them and chase them

4The passage starts with an elephant story in order to explain that in India______ .

A. people easily fall victim to elephants' attacks

B. the man-elephant relationship is getting worse

C. elephant tamers are in short supply

D. dogs are as powerful as elephants

5The underlined word “captured” in the last paragraph probably means “__________”.

A. found B. caught

C. attacked D. chased
