Whenever we hear about “the homeless”, most of us think of the Developing world. But the   31  is that homelessness is everywhere. For example, how many of us would expect to see people living on the streets of a   32  country like Germany?
Kurt Muller and his wife Rita have spent eleven years making   33 for the homeless of Berlin, Germany’s capital. They first   34  one long hot summer when most Germans were   35  on holiday. Kurt and his wife stayed at home, made sandwiches,   36  a table in the street and gave food to the homeless.
The Mullers soon realized that food and clothing weren’t   37   . “What these people also need is warmth and   38  ,” says Rita. The Mullers didn’t   39  to give their phone number to the street people and told them to phone anytime. Rita  40   there was somebody at home to answer the phone and their home was always   41  to anyone who couldn’t face another night on the street.
The couple were soon   42  all their time and money, so Kurt visited food and clothing companies to   43  donations. Today, over thirty companies  44 donate food and other goods to the cause and volunteers help  to  45  them to the homeless. The public also give clothes and money and a shoe producer   46  new shoes.
Kurt and Rita receive no   47  for their hard work. “ We feel like parents,” says Rita, “and parents shouldn’t   48  money for helping their children. The love we get on the streets is our salary.” Though Rita admits she often gets   49  , she says she will continue with her work because she likes the feeling of having made a   50  in the world.

As we all know, getting benched in sports is usually a bad thing. But at one school in Florida, a girl has taken a bench and turned it into something entirely different – a place to find friends. It’s called the Friendship Bench. And it’s the brainchild of a sixth grader at Palm Bay Elementary – a girl named Acacia Woodley.
Acacia’s attitude toward life might be summed up best by a question she recently asked members of the Brevard County School Board – “what if we spend as much time putting the spotlight on kindness as we do on cruelty?” It’s a philosophy Acacias has learned to live her own life -despite having a lot of people would consider a handicap. She was born without a right hand. And her left hand did not form properly. But Acacia says that she has not stopped her from achieving her goals. “You need to believe in your dreams. If you don’t believe in you dreams, I can definitely tell you that they are not going to come true.” She said.
Acacia came up with the idea for the Friendship Bench after seeing kids getting bullied at school. She says she has also experienced bullying herself – kids whispering about her or picking on her because she is different. “Some people say they feel sorry for me. I tell them not to,” she said. “I don’t care that I’m different. I like being different.”
The Friendship Bench looks like a lot of other benches. It has arm sets and a place to lean on. But there are also words painted on it – words such as “hope”, “respect”, “l(fā)isten” and “dream”. Acacia put the benches together with the help from her mother and brother.
Any time a kid feels he or she needs a friend, all that kid needs to do is sit on the bench. It is then up to the other kids – or grown-ups – to fill that need. “It’s a perfect idea,” Palm Bay Elementary Principal Lori said. “It’s something we’ve needed so badly.”
The Friendship Bench has been such a success at Palm Bay Elementary that other schools are now interested in installing one too. “There’s a saying in my teacher’s classroom,” Acacia said. “It says, ‘it you can dream it, you can achieve it.’”

My daughter Alisa was born blind in her right eye and was bullied (欺侮) pretty severely in school. So I quitted my job as a babysitter and then schooled my daughter heart and soul at home.
A year ago a boy of 14 befriended my daughter on Facebook after reading something Alisa wrote about bullying. Today he messaged her and asked if she would like six tickets to a Colorado Rockies baseball game. They have never met in person but she said, “Sure! That would be great.”
Then I received a call from his mother explaining why her son had chosen my daughter. She said he thought my daughter deserved them because of all the good she does in the community. Her son, she explained, had experienced a similar situation and was also home schooled.
What she said is true. Now my daughter Alisa continues to teach groups of girls in trouble in our community how to look within themselves for the positive and how to be their own person.
Everything taken into consideration, we decided to meet the mother and the boy at a local bike shop. After meeting, the boy approached my car and my daughter gave him a hug and thanked him for his generosity. She told him that she had never been to a baseball game and that she was going to take her entire family, including myself, her dad, little sister, her cousin and an aunt who has brain cancer.
We all thanked one another, got in our car, and went our way. As we drove home my daughter opened the envelope. Inside it were the tickets and $100 each to buy hot dogs, pay for parking and not have any worries but a great time.
My daughter has always been the giver and now she and our family are the receivers and I can not tell you how incredibly honored we feel to be on the other end. What an incredible young man to have such a kind idea.

How often do you let other people’s nonsense change your mood? Do you let a bad driver, impolite waiter, rude boss,or an insensitive employee      your day?
One day I was in a taxi and we headed       the airport. We were driving in the    lane when suddenly a black car drove out of a parking space right in front of us. My taxi driver slammed on his      ,slide sideways, and at the very last moment our car stopped and     the other car by just inches! The driver of the other car looked around and started       at us.
My taxi driver just      and waved at the guy. And I mean he was really      . So I asked,"Why did you just do that? This guy almost ruined your car and sent us to the hospital!”
This is when my taxi driver taught me what I now call “The Law of the Garbage Truck”. He explained that many people are like garbage trucks. They run around full of      , full of frustration, full of anger, and full of disappointment. As their garbage       up,they need a place to dump it and sometimes they’ll dump it on     .Don’t take it personally. Just smile, wave, wish them well, and move on.
Believe me. You’ll be      .Don’t take their garbage and      it to other people at work,at home,or on the streets. Life’s too short to wake up in the morning with     .The mark of your success is how quickly you can refocus on what’s     in your life. Roy Baumeister,a psychology researcher from Florida State University, found in his extensive research that you      bad things more often than good things in your life. You store the bad memories more easily, and you      them more frequently.
So…Love the people who treat you right. Ignore the ones who don’t. Life is ten percent what you make it and ninety percent how you       it!
When you follow “The Law of the Garbage Truck”,you take back control of your life. You make room for the good by     go of the bad. Have a Garbage-Free Day!Have a marvelous,garbage-free day!The seeds you plant today       the harvest you reap tomorrow.

Former National Football League player and children’s author Tim Green has added another book to his list of accomplishments: Unstoppable. The book tells the story of a 12-year –old boy named Harrison, who survives life in a cruel foster home before he finally finds a loving family. Once he settles in and realizes his natural football ability, tragedy strikes again and he loses his leg to a deadly bone cancer. Unstoppable follows Harrison’s incredible journey as he faces many challenges in his life.
Tim Green says he decided to write a novel about a kid facing cancer after watching how his wife fought to survive her own illness. “Her mental and physical toughness were more heroic to me than anything I’d ever seen in the national sports leagues,” Green told TFK Kid Reporter Zachary J. Lewis.
After watching his wife’s battle, Green said, he knew he needed to write about a person who struggled through a serious illness. But because the target age for his books is teen, he needed to tell the story through the eyes of someone that age.
When friends introduced Green to Jeffrey Keith, Green knew he had found the right person to help him“ capture the heroism that it takes to fight cancer”. Cancer-survivor Jeffrey Keith lost his leg to disease at age twelve, but went on to be the goalie (守門員)for the Boston College Division 1 Lacrosse(長(zhǎng)曲棍球)Team and was also the first amputee to run 3,300 miles across the country. When Green heard Jeffrey Keith’s story, he knew it was the perfect narrative on which to base his next book.
TFK asked Keith what it felt like to read Unstoppable for the first time. “Tim captured what it felt like for me to go through this experience and battle back,” Keith said. “After I read the book, Tim asked me to describe it in one word, and I said ‘a(chǎn)wesome’. Tim’s work sends a message to all the kids across the country that are facing obstacles that can have nothing to do with cancer: you are all unstoppable, as long as you believe it.”
