As a professor at a large American university, there is a phrase that I hear often from students:“I’m only a 1050.”The unlucky students are speaking of the score on the Scholastic Aptitude Test(SAT),which is used to determine whether they will be admitted to the college or university of their choice,or even if they have a chance to get a higher education at all.The SAT score, whether it is 800,1100 or 1550,has become the focus at this time of their life.

It is obvious that if students value highly their test scores, then a great amount of their self-respect is put in the number.Students who perform poorly on the exam are left feeling that it is all over. The low test score, they think, will make it impossible for them to get into a good college. And without a degree from a prestigious university, they fear that many of life’s doors will remain forever closed.

According to a study done in the 1990s,the SAT is only a reliable indicator of a student’s future performance in most cases.Interestingly,it becomes much more accurate when it is set together with other indicators-like a student’s high school grades.Even if standardized tests like the SAT could show a student’s academic proficiency(學(xué)業(yè)水平),they will never be able to test things like confidence, efforts and willpower, and are unable to give us the full picture of a student’s potentialities(潛力).This is not to suggest that we should stop using SAT scores in our college admission process. The SAT is an excellent test in many ways, and the score is still a useful means of testing students. However,it should be only one of many methods used.

The purpose of the SAT is to test students’ ______.

A.strong will

B.academic ability

C.full potentialities

D.confidence in school work

Students’ self-respect is influenced by their ______.

A.scores in the SAT

B.achievements in mathematics

C.job opportunities

D.money spent on education

“A prestigious university” is most probably ______.

A.a famous university

B.a technical university

C.a traditional university

D.an expensive university

This passage is mainly about ______.

A.how to prepare for the SAT

B.stress caused by the SAT

C.American higher education

D.the SAT and its effects

I can’t believe it ! Three other students—I met them at a lecture and they' re all about my own age—have invited me to share a flat with them. It's in an old house and it has its own kitchen, so   we can cook for ourselves. And my room—righy at the top of the house—is fantastic!

I moved into my new room last Sunday.I feel really happy.Life is going to be so much more fun from now on!

It was graduation day at the university where I work and a beautiful day quite unlike the first graduation I attended as a young professor. On that cold day years ago, as we watched the students walking into the hall, one of my colleagues turned to me and said, "Graduation will be one of the happiest and one of the saddest time of your life. "At my inquiry, he answered, "Because the students you have gotton to know have to leave."
As years went by, my previous confusion about my colleague's words no longer existed. When I came across naughty students, I had to rethink why I chose to be a teacher. It obviously isn’t money. Once a former computer science student of mine called me, asking me if I wanted to have a change .He was working at Nintendo Corporation. His salary was higher than my current one, though I have more education and have worked for over a decade, with my programming skills, he said he could get me hired. I thanked me, but declined his kind offer.
A few days before this current graduation, while working on final grades, I found a note a student had slipped in with her homework. She thanked me for being her teacher and said the things she had learned in my class — not about my math, but about life — would be things she would remember long after the math skills had faded away. As I finished reading, I remembered why I had become a teacher.
Now, on this sunny graduation day, as I again observed the sea of blue hats and gowns .I did so with renewed dedication and a deeper sense of sati faction – I wi11 always be grateful that I am teacher.

Dear fellow students:

I am Li Ming from Class Two, Senior Three. Today I am very glad to stand here and run for the post of chairman of the Students’ Union of our school. I think I am a very active person and always ready to help those who need help. Furthermore, I have the experience to have been the monitor of our class for 3 years and keen on the service for you, so I am sure I am qualified for it.

If I am lucky enough to win the election, the first thing I will do is to enrich our students’ after-class activities. Owing to the efforts of our school, now more and more students have got involved in various after-class activities. I think they have benefited us a lot, because after a whole day’s heavy work, it is great to have a relaxation from the activities, which will not only improve our social ability but also make us healthier. However, not all of us have realized that yet.
