Researchers are placing robotic dogs(機(jī)器狗)  in the homes of lonely old people to determine whether they can improve the quality of life for humans.Alan Beck, an expert in human-animal relationship and
Nancy Edwards, a professor of nursing, are leading the animal-assisted study concerning the influence of
robotic dogs on old people's depression, physical  activity, and life satisfaction. "No one will argue that an older person is better off being more active, challenged, or stimulated (刺激) ,"  Edwards points out. " The problem  is  how  we  promote (使……成為現(xiàn)實(shí)) that, especially for those without friends or help. A
robotic dog could be a solution. "
In the study, the robot, called AIBO, is placed for six weeks in the houses of some old people who
live alone. Before placing AIBO in the home, researchers will collect baseline data for six weeks. These
old people will keep a diary to note their feelings and activities before and after AIBO. Then, the
researchers will review the data to detemune if it has inspired any changes in the life of its owner.
"I talk to him all the time, and he responds to my voice,"  says a seventy-year-old lady. "When I'm
watching TV, he'll stay in my arms until he wants down. He has a mind of his own. "
The AIBOs respond to certain orders. The researchers say they have some advantages over live dogs, especially for old people. Often the elderly are disabled and cannot care for an animal by walking it or playing with it. A robotic dog removes exercise and feeding concerns.
"At the beginning, it was believed that no one would relate to the robotic dog because it was metal and not furry (毛茸茸的) ," Beck  says. "But  it's  amazing how quickly we have given up that belief. "
"Hopefully, down the road, these robotic pets could become a more valuable health helper. They will
record their masters' blood pressure, oxygen levels, or heart rhythms. AIBOs may even one day have
games that can help stimulate older people's minds. "

When women sit together to watch a movie on TV, they usually talk simultaneously(同時(shí)的)about a variety of subjects, including children, men, careers and what's happening in their livesWhen groups of men and women watch a movie together, the men usually end up telling the women to shut upMen can either talk or watch the screenthey can't do both-and they don't understand that women canBesides, women consider that the point of all getting together is to have a good time and develop relationshipsnot just to sit there like couch potatoes staring at the screen

During the ad breaks, a man often asks a woman to explain the plot and tell him where the relationship between the characters is goingHe is unable, unlike women, to read the subtle body language signals that reveal how the characters are feeling emotionallySince women originally spent their days with the other women and children in the group, they developed the ability to communicate successfully in order to maintain relationshipsFor a woman, speech continues to have such a clear purposeto build relationships and make friendsFor men, to talk is to relate the facts

Men see the telephone as a communication tool for sending facts and information to other people, but a woman sees it as a means of bondingA woman can spend two weeks on vacation with her girlfriend and, when she returns home, telephone the same girlfriend and talk for another two hours

There is no convincing evidence that social conditioning, the fact that girls'mothers talked them more, is the reason why girls talk more than boysPsychiatrist Dr Michael Lewis, author Social Behaviour and Language Acquisition, conducted experiments that found mothers talked to and looked at, baby girls more often than baby boysScientific evidence shows parents res the brain bias of their childrenSince a girl's brain is better organized to send and receive speech, we therefore talk to them moreConsequently, mothers who try to talk to their sons are usually pointed to receive only short grunts in reply
