Throughout most states of the USA, there are countless secret swimming holes, and following are 4 of them.

Havasu Falls (Arizona)

This attractive waterfall in the Grand Canyon is undoubtedly a destination spot requiring a 10-mile walk to the falls. You can take a guided tour to the falls, or make it on your own. The Havasu Falls are on the Havasupai Indian Reservation, which means you'll need to get a permit to visit — this has become increasingly difficult as more people discover this hidden place.

Hamilton Pool (Austin)

Hamilton Pool was created when an underground river's roof fell down suddenly; exposing what is now the swimming hole and creating a 50-foot waterfall that flows over the above limestone(石灰?guī)r). You'll have to reserve beforehand to gain entry to the Hamilton Pool Preserve.

Chutes and Ladders (Maui)

To get to this secret swimming hole, you'll have to take a rope 40 feet down the face of a cliff, and then climb down about 8 feet of lava rock to the pool. Once there, however, you'll be glad you made the journey. The swimming hole is on the edge of the ocean — a natural pool, you could say — with a depth that invites you to jump in without crowds of people around to watch.

Homestead Crater (Utah)

The Homestead Crater is hidden under a rock dome(圓頂) with an opening at the top that allows for sunlight and air. It was once only accessible by that top opening, but there is now easy access through a side path for visitors. Go for a swim in this beautiful mineral water spring.

C.Chutes and LaddersD.Homestead Crater

2What do you need to get to Chutes and Ladders?

由Havasu Falls介紹的那一欄最后一句“The Havasu Falls are on the Havasupai Indian Reservation, which means you'll need to get a permit to visit — this has become increasingly difficult as more people discover this hidden place.”

由Chutes and Ladders 介紹的那一欄第一句“To get to this secret swimming hole, you'll have to take a rope 40 feet down the face of a cliff, and then climb down about 8 feet of lava rock to the pool.”

由全文可知,Havasu Falls那一欄介紹的第一句“This attractive waterfall in the Grand Canyon is undoubtedly a destination spot requiring a 10-mile walk to the falls.” Hamilton Pool一欄介紹中的第一句“Hamilton Pool was created when an underground river's roof fell down suddenly”表示的是漢密爾頓水潭是一個(gè)地下水溶洞頂部坍塌之后形成的。Chutes and Ladders一欄介紹中的第三句“The swimming hole is on the edge of the ocean — a natural pool”表示的是這個(gè)深水潭是在海洋的邊緣。Homestead Crater介紹那一欄的第一句“The Homestead Crater is hidden under a rock dome(圓頂) with an opening at the top that allows for sunlight and air.”

A 3-year-old boy who was lost in the woods for two days is now safe at home with his family. But Casey Hathaway told his rescuers that he was not alone in the rainy, freezing cold woods. He said he was with a friend — a bear.

The child went missing on January 22. He was playing with friends at his grandmother’s house in the southern state of North Carolina. When the other children returned home but Casey did not, the family searched the area for almost an hour before calling the police. Police formed a search and rescue team to look for the young boy in the nearby woods. But two days went by and still — no Casey.

Then on January 24, someone called the police saying he heard a child crying in the woods. Police followed up on the information and found Casey at about 9 30 that night. They pulled him out of some briar. He was in good health. Casey told the rescuers that he had hung out with a black bear for two days, a bear he called his "friend".

Sheriff Chip Hughes spoke with reporters from several news agencies. He said Casey did not say how he was able to survive in the woods for three days in the cold, rainy weather. However, the sheriff said, “ He did say he had a friend in the woods that was a bear that was with him. ”

Hundreds of people helped in the search and rescue efforts, including some 600 volunteers, federal police and members of the military. Officer Hughes told reporters that at no point did he think Casey had been kidnapped.

His mother Brittany Hathaway talked with reporters from a local news agency and thanked everyone who joined the search for her son. “ We just want to tell everybody that we’re very thankful that you took the time out to search for Casey and prayed for him, and he's good, ” said his mother. “ He is good, he is up and talking. 【題目】閱讀下面短文,根據(jù)所給情節(jié)進(jìn)行續(xù)寫,使之構(gòu)成一個(gè)完整的故事。

Arthur, a young painter, went to France to surround himself with beauty and inspiration. He lived on the cheap, painted every day, visited museums, traveled to picturesque places, bravely spoke to everyone he met, and showed his work to anyone who would look at it. One afternoon, he struck up a conversation at a cafe with a group of charming young people, who turned out to be some fancy nobles. They took a liking to Arthur and invited him to a party that weekend in a castle in the Loire Valley. They said this was going to be the party of the year. It would be attended by the rich and famous and by several crowned heads of Europe. Best of all, it was a masquerade ball(化妝舞會(huì))."Dress up, " they said, "and join us!"

Excited, Arthur worked all week on a costume(服裝)that he was certain would be highly impressive. He held back on neither the details nor the imagination of this creation. Then he rented a car and drove three hours to the castle. He changed into his costume in the car and went up the castle steps. Arthur entered the ballroom, proud.

Upon arrival, he immediately realized his mistake.

This was indeed a costume party but this was a themed costume party. The theme was “a medieval court". All around him, the wealthy and beautiful were dressed in fancy clothes, wearing sparkling jewels. Arthur, on the other hand, was dressed as a Lobster (龍蝦), wearing a red coat, red tights, red ballet slippers, and giant red claws, Also, his face was painted red. And he was the only American in the room, too

It may not come as a surprise but the world as a whole is getting richer. Some people have more disposable(可自由支配的)income to spend on luxuries such as holidays, cars, TVs and smart phones. Recent data has shown that the number of people living in extreme poverty has halved in recent decades. So should we celebrate the fact that more of us now have a better standard of living?

Maybe not. While the gap between the rich and the poor in some countries is narrowing, there is still a lot of inequality in other places-some people have a lot of money and opportunities and others don't. A recent report by Oxfam and Credit Suisse revealed how divided many of us are when it comes to wealth. A lot of the money in the world is in the hands of very few people. In fact, 48% of global wealth is owned by the richest l% of the population.

But some countries are attempting to reduce this inequality and make the poor, less poor. According to David Bryer from Oxfam, Brazil has been taking "some really sensible measures--measures around having more progressive tax, around investing in a higher minimum wage and investing in central public services." Having a higher minimum wage can help people eat better and seek a better education. And more people with more money buy more things-and factories can produce more. In turn, a factory which produces more will need more workers. So, more jobs are created.

Other wealthy individuals are doing their bit to help reduce inequality. Bill Gates, the founder of Microsoft, earned a lot of money from his company but when he retired, he and his wife Melinda, created a foundation to help the poor. He thinks that rich people should, of course, pay their taxes but he also advises that they should all "look at taking their wealth and being philanthropic (樂善好施的 ) , both in their own country and to help the global poorest."

Bill Gates feels that giving money to help poor people is "fulfilling". But if other super-rich people don't want to experience this fulfillment then, according to Oxfam, very soon the wealthiest l% will soon own more money than the rest of the world's population. Do you think that is fair?

1The first two paragraphs mainly tell us _________.

A.the poverty and inequality in a richer world

B.some sensible measures to make the 'poor less poor

C.the increase of global wealth in recent decades

D.the narrowing gap between the rich and the poor

2What is the government in Brazil doing to the minimum wage?

A.Limiting it.B.Increasing it.

C.Making it lower.D.Setting it free.

3What do Bill and Melinda Gates think very rich people should do with some of their money?

A.Spend it on their luxuries.B.Give it to help the poor.

C.Invest it in their business.D.Hand it over to their children.

Lai Shixiong, 68, president of the Ivy League Analytical English magazine based in Taiwan, believes that constant practice and hard work are the keys to mastering English。

Like many non-native speakers, Lai failed when he started learning English. When he was in high school, he once got the unbelievably low mark of seven out of 100 in an English test. He almost gave up on English, but then he graduated from high school and enrolled(入學(xué) )in a military(軍隊(duì)的) school, where he met a classmate who was very good at English.

Amazed by his classmate’s American accent, Lai decided to start learning English from the very beginning. To correct his pronunciation, Lai practiced phonetic symbols(音標(biāo)) hundreds of times everyday using vinyl records(黑膠唱片).

Now that he was able to pronounce words, he began to practice dialogues. “I just talked to myself as if I were in a dialogue," he said.“I was basically talking to the air.”

However, talking to himself also meant that Lai wouldn’t be able to hear English expressions from others. That was when dictionaries came to his rescue. Unlike many who just look up vocabulary and pronunciations, Lai looked at detailsdefinitions, usages and example sentences. “By checking every single part of the entry(詞條), you learn not only the vocabulary itself, but plenty of useful small words,” Lai said.

Reading and listening to English news is another good way to keep abreast of(了解…… “The English news can teach us how to describe new things in our daily lives,” Lai said.

When he found it easy enough to speak English, Lai thought of two ways to improve his skills. He used English to describe everything he saw. He even translated speeches when he went to class meetings at the military school. “There is no shortcut to mastering a language. You have to practice,” Lai said. After all, Rome wasn’t built in a day.

I was interested in reading a newspaper article about a new concept in old people’s homes in France. The idea is simple, but revolutionarycombining a residential home for the elderly with a nursery school in the same building.

1 In the afternoon, the residents enjoy reading or telling stories to the children, and if a child is feeling sad or tired, there is always a kind lap to sit on and a cuddle (擁抱). There are trips out and birthday parties too.

2The children are happy because they get a lot more individual attention, and respond well because someone has time for them. They see illness and death and learn to accept them. The residents are happy because they feel useful and needed. They are more active and more interested in life when the children are around and they take more interest in their appearance too.

3There are many reasons for this, including the breakdown of the extended family, working parents with no time to care for aging relations, families that have moved away, and smaller flats with no room for grandparents. But the result is the sameincreasing numbers of children without grandparents and old people who have no contact with children. And more old people who are lonely and feel useless, along with more and more families with young children who desperately need more support. 4

That’s why intergenerational programmes, designed to bring the old and the young together, are growing in popularity all over the world. 5 Using young people to teach IT skills to older people is one obvious example.

Using old people as volunteer assistants in schools is another, perhaps reading with children who need extra attention.

A.The advantages are enormous for everyone concerned.

B.There are examples of successful attempts all over the world.

C.Nowadays there is less and less contact between the old and the young.

D.However, there are some similarities between the old and the young

E.The children and the residents eat lunch together and share activities.

F.No previous experience can we use to communicate between them.

G.It’s a major problem in many societies.
