I ran into a stranger as he passed by. “I’m so sorry!” was my reply. Then he said, “Excuse me too. I wasn’t   36  watching for you.” We were very polite, this stranger and I. Then we went   37  our way after saying goodbye.
But at     38   , a different story is told. How we treat our loved ones, young and old. Later in the kitchen, as I    39   the meal, my daughter walked up to me, very still. When I turned, I    40   knocked her down. “Get out of the way!” I shouted with a frown (皺眉). She stepped away silently, with her little heart    41  . I didn’t realize how rudely I had spoken.
That night, when I lay    42   in bed, God’s quiet voice spoke to me and said, “While    43   with a stranger, you are calm and polite, but with those you love, you are quick to excite.  Go to look around on the kitchen floor, you’ll find some flowers there by the    44   . Those are the flowers she brought for you. She    45    them herself — pink, yellow, and your favorite blue. She stood there quietly and you never saw the    46    in her eyes.”
By this time, I felt sad and small and now my own tears began to fall. I quietly went and knelt (跪) by her    47   . “Wake up, my dear,” I said. “Are these the flowers you picked up for me?” She smiled, “I found them out by the tree, I    48      them in a napkin(紙巾), just for you. I knew you’d like them, especially the     49   .” I said, “I am so sorry that I missed them today. And I    50   have fussed (大驚小怪) at you that way. ”
And she whispered, “Mommy, that’s OK… I still love you     51   .” I hugged her and said, “I love you, too and I love the flowers.”
Do you know that: if you die tomorrow, the    52   you are working for could easily replace you in a matter of days. But the family you leave    53  will feel the loss for the rest of their lives. And come to think of it, we pour ourselves more into our    54   than into our families--- an unwise investment (投資) indeed.
Remember that   55  =" (F)ATHER" + (A)ND + (M)OTHER + (I ) + (L)OVE + (Y)OU.

I drove Dad into Mijas, and   33  to pick him up at 4 pm, then dropped off the car at the   34 . With several hours to spare. I went to a theater.   35 , when the last movie finished, it was six. A woman named Emily renewing her driver’s license at the County Clerk’s office was asked to state her occupation. She hesitated, uncertain how to classify herself.
“What I mean is,” explained the recorder, “do you have a job, or are you just a …”
“Of course I have a job,” said Emily. “I’m a mother.”
“We don’t list ‘mother’ as an occupation… ‘housewife’ covers it,” said the recorder.
One day I found myself in the same situation. The clerk was obviously a career woman, confident and possessed of a high sounding title. “What is your occupation?” she asked.
The words simply popped out. “I’m a Research Associate in the field of Child Development and Human Relations.”
The clerk paused, ballpoint pen frozen in midair.
I repeated the title slowly, then I stared with wonder as my statement was written in bold, black ink on the official questionnaire.
“Might I ask,” said the clerk with new interest, “Just what you do in this field?”
Coolly, without any trace of panic in my voice, I heard myself reply, “I have a continuing program of research (what mother doesn’t), in the lab and in the field (normally I would have said indoors and out). Of course, the job is one of the most demanding in the humanities (any mother care to disagree?), and I often work 14 hours a day (24 is more like it). But the job is more challenging than most careers and rewards are more of a satisfaction rather than just money.”
There was an increasing note of respect in the clerk’s voice as she completed the form, stood up, and showed me out.
As I drove into our driveway, buoyed up (受鼓舞) by my glamorous new career, I was greeted by my lab assistants---ages 13, 7, and 3.
Upstairs I could hear our new experimental model (a 6 month old baby), in the child-development program, testing out a new vocal pattern.
I felt proud! I had gone on the official records as someone more distinguished and indispensable (不可缺少的) to mankind than “just another mother.”
Motherhood…What a glorious career! Especially when there’s a title on the door.

A.Because the author cared little about rewards.
B.Because she thought the author did admirable work.
C.Because she admired the author’s research work in the lab.

小題4:What is the author’s purpose of writing the passage?
A.To show how you describe your job affects your feelings toward it.

D.To show that being a mother is hard and boring work.

Dear Volunteers,
The service you will provide to elderly individuals in Abilene as a Meals on Wheels volunteer is deeply appreciated. I want to take this opportunity to thank you for the many miles you will travel and all of the hours you will contribute to help make this one of the best programs in the entire state.
We have our staff members make a home visit before adding each person to the program and try to visit everyone at least once every year. That is hardly enough, and we depend on your contact a great deal! It is important that you report back when you do not get an answer to your knock on the door. The person inside may be hurt or ill. They may be in hospital or out of town and fail to inform us. If they are frequently absent, we may need to determine if they still need meals.
If you find someone with a medical emergency, please call 911 to request medical assistance, and then call the Meals on Wheels office. If you find someone who needs assistance other than for a medical emergency, please call the Meals on Wheels office at 6725050, and we will try to find the appropriate agency or individual to call.
Let us know when a certain person needs extra food. We have a food preparation room of shelf stable items to share with them. Please feel free to take a few magazines when you deliver meals. Many of those we serve cannot afford magazines and enjoy reading. If someone is interested in getting books from the Abilene Public Library, let us know. We can sign them up for the Books on Wheels program. Call if you smell gas strongly when you deliver meals, or if someone needs a space heater, a blanket, or an electric fan. Please convey all needs to us, and we will try to see that they are met. Some of the elderly people who we offer our service may have cancers, liver diseases, AIDS, etc. If you do not want to deliver meals to the people with certain types of health problems, such as these, please let us know.
Sincerely,
Betty L. Bradley, LBSW,
Executive Director

科目:高中英語 來源:不詳 題型:閱讀理解

Last year, I met a little boy to whom my heart went out. He would talk to me every single day, and always seemed to have a smile on his face. His problem was that he stuttered (口吃) extremely badly when he tried to talk. It was really hard to understand what he was saying, although he loved to tell big tales!
One morning, I was talking to the teachers who ran the school store. The boy stopped by and said hello to all of us. Afterwards they told me that the boy would stop every day to ask if they would be there the next day. But of course, he never had money to buy anything.
I decided that I would get him a little something just as a surprise. So I picked out a pencil, a rubber, and a small notebook for just $1.00. I cannot describe the look on his face when I gave him the three little things. Then, without a stutter, he loudly said, "Thank you so much!" and just kept repeating, "Thank you! Thank you!" He gave me a big hug before going off to class.
I was touched to see someone appreciate something that much. As he walked off, he was showing his new stuff to other kids walking to class. I have to say that I have never spent a dollar that would mean so much to me.
小題1:Why did the boy never buy anything from the store?
A.Because he couldn’t make himself understood.
B.Because the teachers were unwilling to sell him anything.
C.Because he couldn’t afford anything.
D.Because he could never decide what to buy.
小題2:What do we learn from the third paragraph?
A.Actually the boy had no stutter at all.
B.The boy was too excited to stutter at the moment.

科目:高中英語 來源:不詳 題型:閱讀理解

John once told me a story about his friend, Michael. Michael happened to be on a train sitting next to a young man who seemed worried. Finally the young man told the friend that he was a convict (罪犯) returning home from a prison far away. What he did had brought shame (羞恥) on his family, and they had neither visited him nor written to him. He hoped, however, that this was only because they were too poor to travel and too busy to write.
When he was set free he had written to tell them he wanted to go home. To make matters easy for them, however, he had asked them to put up a signal (信號) for him when the train passed their little farm. If the family had forgiven (原諒) him, they were to put up a white ribbon (絲帶) in the big apple tree near the railway. If they didn't want him back, they were to do nothing, and he would stay on the train, and go far away.
As the train neared his hometown his suspense became so great that he was afraid to look out of the window. He asked Michael to watch for the big apple tree. They changed seats. In a minute, Michael put his hand on the young convict’s shoulder, "There it is," His eyes was filled with sudden tears. "It’s all right. The whole tree is white with ribbons."
